Yeah, I think the 'calendar' confirmed it for me... Nice gig for him - I'm sure he'll do well! I'm hoping that we will eventually get something 'official' about retirement, such as we got from Katherine. For someone as prominent as Apolo, I hate my note next to his name in the Index, " Presumably Retired"...

'presumably'....LOL!!! Not only the calendar, but the major upper body parts said it all for me. There's no way that's a short track physique! (unless they change the rules to allow 'tackling').

@ gasp - Always happy to amuse... @ Lori- Talk about 'ask and ye shall receive' AAO may have had the NBC broadcast job in his sights, but as long as Gabel was in the picture, he may have been keeping his options open if the broadcasting job wasn't available. Now that I'll bet Gabel pretty much made himself 'persona non gratis' at NBC (yeah, let's get that sex offender guy to broadcast at the Olympic Games. Clearly this is the sort of Squeaky Clean American Olympic Spirit/Athlete we want to promote... NOT!) it was pretty much a given Apolo had the job in the bag. I mean seriously, who else were they gonna think of first? Congrats Apolo. You'll be great at it! If we can't see you skate at the Olympics, this is the next best thing.

Here's USA Today's report on Apolo's retirement and new position with NBC and Minute to Win It. www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2013/04/24/apolo-anton-ohno-olympics/2111049/He was asked about the current climate at USS and he responds. However, the first thought that comes to my mind was Lincoln's quote as he was being nominated to represent Illinois in the Senate: "A house divided against itself cannot stand." Funny how a statement from June of 1858 can still ring true today.

Apolo played it hard and tight on his reputation. He may not have always treated the people around him as well as one would hope, but I've never heard allegations of the kind that have surfaced about USS members and the coaches. Although everyone pretty much knew what you are getting when you get an old time Korean coach.
Went skating for the last time Saturday and handed over all my gear to the club. 25th Anniversary party for Northern California Speedskaters! Surgery on my knee Wednesday and beautiful new home in Bend for retirement. I hope the long timer I talked to was correct about the American people being very forgiving and forgetting, especially where athletes are concerned. Penn State may have changed that equation. Guess we'll see how Simon Cho gets treated...if it is only 2 years suspension I'd say everyone is ready to move on. This is such a great sport, just fabulous to participate in and to watch at close quarters. We are so lucky to have found it friends!

sk8er - Awww, I'm sad that you're giving up skating... maybe you'll have to start a developmental program in Bend! Wishing you all the best in the next chapter of your life, and hoping the surgery goes well - 'cause even if you're not gonna be skating, I seem to remember that you enjoyed hiking! ------------ On another note: Here's a current article about Apolo that throws back to 2002 - as this article indicates (and as we heard 'back in the day'), the Korean skaters themselves held little animosity. As a matter of fact, it has seemed to me that one of Team USA's closest 'team' relationships has always been with the Koreans! The amends he wants to make are with the Korean public who are very passionate about their skaters - and they did not take KDS' disqualification lightly... Ohno wants to kiss and make up with South KoreaBy Julian Linden / Reuters / April 25, 2013 “I never had any resentment towards South Koreans. They were always incredible competitors,” he told Reuters in an interview. “They were gracious to me on the field of play and a lot of them are very good friends."Read it all: www.euronews.com/sport/1936564-ohno-wants-to-kiss-and-make-up-with-south-korea/#.UX6Wwk1bBz4.facebook

Did U watch it? Good show - I've never seen MTWI in its various re-incarnations, but it appeared to be a 'physical' version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire with its different levels of "Do you want to continue?" Cool - but with all of my other distractions, I'm not sure I can make a habit of it (though Apolo DID do a great job as host)!

In addition to the referenced article, I heard that Apolo was on the Today Show this morning! For some reason I was thinking it was tomorrow, so I'm sorry I didn't get the info up! I think that this article is interesting because in Apolo's 'new life', many of his TV fans don't know his complete short track story. Post-Olympics, Apolo Ohno finds himself skating faster than everby Luaine Lee — McClatchy-Tribune News Service / July 15, 2013 HOLLYWOOD - It took champion skater Apolo Ohno years to earn his eight Olympic medals, but now he's granting contestants 60 seconds to win their award. As host of GSN's "Minute to Win It" competition, Ohno knows what it feels like to teeter on the brink of failure.
But, for him, that precipice made all the difference.
The champion short track speed skater remembers when all that glittered was not gold or even bronze. "When I was 14 years old I was No. 1 in the U.S. When I was 15 years old I got last place in the same competition during the trials. It was very close to me either hanging up my skates and pursuing something different or continuing on this course. That was a turning point for me," says Ohno seated at a sunlit table in a hotel cafe here.Read It All: www.ledger-enquirer.com/2013/07/15/2583248/post-olympics-apolo-ohno-finds.html

I posted this on our Facebook Page earlier this week, but forgot to post it here! Apolo Anton Ohno, Al Michaels confirmed by NBC for Winter OlympicsBy Jessica Gelt / Los Angeles Times / July 28, 2013, 5:16 p.m Apolo Anton Ohno, America's most decorated Winter Olympic athlete, may have retired from short track speed skating, but he'll be at the Winter Olympics anyway next year.
NBC Sports Group announced this weekend that it has signed Ohno as an analyst for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The athlete, who won eight medals, will also work on features and provide studio commentary during the Games.Read it all: (You'll have to copy/paste the entire link) www.latimes.com/entertainment/tv/showtracker/la-et-st-apolo-anton-ohno-al-michaels-nbc-sochi-winter-olympics-20130728,0,7288418.story
