Ouch. It is really some words want to say about the relay final race. She can exceed Li due to Li had skated for more than two laps. Actually,Li Jianrou skated a lot of laps, she had no strength. Before there were an error, then an error led to a series of mistakes, and finally led to the penalty. It is a lament rather than regret about the result.

This is a pleasant surprise. I knew she was training with the national team (speed skating) this summer. I didn't think she would convert. But then she started with speed skating before she skated short track and her sister has been on the speed skating nat'l team for a while so this news shouldn't be a complete surprise.
I heard she did pretty well over the summer. Not expecting her to win any medal any time soon but I too think she would do just fine.

South Korea's National Team Trials are this week. The competition starts today at 10am local time, 9pm EST/6pm PST (aka in 30 minutes).
Update: The way I understand it, there are 3 trials to select the Korean National Team. The one yesterday and today is to qualify skaters for this weekends trials. The main trials are this weekend with the skaters who qualified through the first trials along with the World Championship team to select the top 8. The final trial is in September or October to select the top 6 for the World Cups.

sk8erfan, I'm struggling this morning after watching the trial all night. Yes, that's exactly how they're doing it this season. Let me just add a few more things to your comments if I may. Until recently(last season), time races were used to weed out the skaters at the first trial. But starting this season, every skater must compete in each of the distances (500, 1000 & 1500) & the top 8(?) will also have to skate the 3000 super final. In fact, this is true for all 3 trials. Out of 48 men & 28 ladies entered in the first trial, 30 men & 19 ladies will advance to the second trial (this SAT & SUN). These skaters will join the squads from the last season at the 2nd trial. So in total, 36 men & 24 ladies will compete this weekend. Only the top 8 men & 7 ladies will be selected to train with the national team and advance to the final trial in September. Because of CHOI, Minjeong winning the overall World Championships title this year, she was automatically selected for the upcoming season. This is why they're only selecting 7 ladies at the 2nd trial. At the final trial, 6 men and 5 ladies will be selected to compete in the 2015-16 World Cups.

Skating union under fire for soft punishment The Korea Skating Union (KSU) is under fire for the allegedly soft punishment it handed down Thursday for a short-track speed skater who beat up a junior skater during a national team training session last month.
Despite it being an obvious act of violence, the skating body's athletes committee issued a mere "warning" to the skater in an apparent bid to protect him from losing eligibility to appear at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Games.
In explaining the rationale behind that decision, the KSU said, "Though violence should not be tolerated in any way, the injured party provided the cause of the attack. Since the athletes committee can only punish the attacker with a warning or suspension, it determined suspension far outweighed his wrongdoing, thus its only option was issuing a warning."
Though the union did not identify the assailant, Shin Da-woon, 22, was the one who beat the junior skater about the face for touching his ankle while passing him during a training session at the Korea National Training Center, also known as the Taeneung Training Center, on the outskirts of Seoul on Sept. 16. The KSU explained that the two were doing "training to maintain leads," and passing is customarily forbidden to prevent injuries.
Some of the criticism being leveled at the KSU relates to how it has interpreted the incident. By saying "the victim provided the cause," some suggest the union was hinting that the victim deserved the treatment he received.
Critics believe the KSU is protecting Shin because he has bagged several gold medals in International Skating Union (ISU) World Cup Short Track Speed Skating 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter events in recent years, and has a chance to win gold for Korea at the PyeongChang Games.
If Shin were suspended for any length of time, his bid to appear at the Olympics on home soil would be virtually over because the Korean Olympic Committee, the umbrella committee of the country's sports federations, mandates that any athlete or coach slapped with suspension of less than three years cannot represent Korea for three years from the day his or her suspension has expired.

I know I haven't been on here much lately as I'm away from home on my trek most of the time - but I just got a very sad Google alert - Noh has lost his battle with bone cancer. Only 24 years old... www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20160404000488Hoping to find an article in English with more details, but Tony just posted some very sad news - Jinkyu Noh apparently has been diagnosed with bone cancer. Here's an English article about Noh, so sorry to hear about this. Wishing him a speedy recovery and all the best. Noh tumour dampens Korean short track team further
South Korea's embattled short track speed skating team were dealt another blow to morale on Thursday with injured world champion Noh Jin-kyu undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumour that could threaten his career. The 21-year-old had already been ruled out of competing at the Sochi Olympics next month after fracturing his elbow in a fall on January 14, with the examination of the injury showing the tumour in his shoulder had swelled to 13 centimetres and become malignant. Noh, a 1500 metre specialist, first became aware of the tumour last September but had opted not to have it removed until after the February 7-23 Games as it was small and benign. "We also found out about the tumour through the media reports and were taken aback," an official at the Korea Skating Union (KSU) told Reuters on Friday. "He bumped into a Canadian skater at the World Cup last September and fractured his left shoulder ... the exact same spot where he had a tumour. "So we thought it was something due to the fracture that was sticking out of his uniform, never a 13-centimetre-long malignant tumour." Noh had been taking painkillers since but a lump was visible in his left shoulder in a picture recently posted on the blog of the retired short track skater An Sang-mi. "I saw the muscle swollen so much and already hardened and asked if he was okay and he just said he was fine," said An on her blog. He will begin chemotherapy in two weeks, doctors said. The news is the latest blow to hit the revered short track team, who have provided all but four of the country's 23 Winter Olympic golds and 37 of 45 total medals. A fortnight ago, one of the national team coaches was temporarily expelled from the Taeneung National Team Training Centre amid allegations that he had sexually molested his former student two years ago. Also likely to grate the team is the form of one of their former skaters, Viktor Ahn, who won the World Cup title over 500 metres in November. Ahn, formerly known as Ahn Hyun-soo, won three gold medals at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, but took Russian citizenship in 2011 after the 28-year-old skater was controversially omitted for the Vancouver Games. The KSU said the news of Noh's ailment would obviously have an effect on the team. "I am not sure his teammates know about the tumour and surgery of Noh because they already left for France on Wednesday and I have not spoken with them regarding the matter," the official said. "They will be saddened and demoralized by the news but I am sure they will not feel disturbed too much too long since the big game is fast approaching." uk.reuters.com/article/2014/01/24/uk-olympics-shorttrack-cancer-idUKBREA0N0KB20140124
