Have you guys seen this? Classified ad as follows: Small nation needs well-trained, highly motivated ST speed skaters to represent them in Sochi. All US Athletes welcomed! especially if you have medaled in the Olympics or on the World Cup Circuit. Citizenship guaranteed including VISAs to train in America under the coach you choose! Okay--snarky humor. But man, if only, if only....

What happened to the idea of trying to hold the trials in a location that more accurately represented the altitude of the actual Olympics? Seems to me Sochi is at or near sea-level. If we want to win, would we not try to have trials in a situation as close as possible to the real thing? In Vancouver, many of Canada's big, strong power skaters got stuck in soft ice and denser air, something they didn't usually find in Calgary, and, in the end, smaller, lighter skaters ended up doing better than expected. Hope we don't suffer the results for choosing a team at a venue that won't replicate Sochi the best. I understand from a $$$ perspective, it may be more attractive to hold trials in SLC - USS will not have to pay to transport and house all those National Team athletes, and, Utah Oval may not have as much rink rental and public skate revenue to lose as other venues, plus they are subsidized by the UAF. Also, NBC may have had some say in this? Still, if it's all about the medals, when does it become worth it to go outside of Utah for trials?

USS posted this 'gem' on their Skate Left blog... with the World (Long Track) Sprint Championships being contested this weekend, the short track team pitched in to remove the ST pads to prep for the big event! The whole artiicle is noteworthy, but the highlight is the 'ST Goes Bobsledding' video, with Travis Jayner (driver); Kyle Carr (brakeman); and Eddy Alvarez & J.R. Celski rounding out the team! Can anyone tell me what happened to the non U.S. Citizen skaters at Junior Championships? I heard that USS failed to register those skaters with a green card (the parents I guess??) with the ISU and that their results were invalidated. Seems they didn't realize they failed to get this approval in until AFTER the races and then called the skaters and parents (Korean) into a room and... Whaz up?

Whaz up? sk8er: There's a good discussion going on about this on the Jr. US Championships thread. It got some 'legs', so I think I'll create a separate thread for it on the Hot Topics board. Look for it shortly! If there's further news on the subject, it'll be posted there.

Yeah, it's kinda like that - well said, Kristina... amen and AMEN! Kristina Groves: In awe of short track speedskatersOlympic long track medallist wasn't cut out for sportBy Kristina Groves, Special to CBC Sports Posted: Mar 8, 2013 To see short track on TV is exciting. To see it in person is something else altogether. Standing at ice level, the sheer speed and intensity of the sport are extraordinarily impressive. The angle at which the skaters must lean, and the g-forces they must forcefully counteract, on a blade just over a millimetre wide, defies the perception of what is humanly possible. Add to the mix the thrill of a perfectly calculated pass, and the sport reaches an excitement level unmatched by many.Read it all: www.cbc.ca/sports/speedskating/story/2013/03/08/sp-kristina-groves-short-track-long-track-speed-skating.html
