Despite our criticisms of USS as a whole, we would never shortchange the skaters here at BB - nor will we discount the positive things that USS is doing. We appreciate their use of social media to engage fans, and here are some photos they've recently released on Facebook: Visit their Facebook page for more photos! www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=tn_tnmn#!/media/set/?set=a.258479973367.182105.243482938367&type=3 Center (in blue/navy): Cole Krueger; clockwise: John-Henry Krueger; Eddy Alvarez; Sarah Chen; Keith Carroll; Lana Gehring; Soo An Yoo; Chris Creveling; Jessica Smith; Tamara Frederick; Kimberly Derrick; Coach Jun Hyung Yeo This is one of the coolest ST pics I've seen in a long time! sailboater: I tried to upload the .pdf, but my antiquated computer got too tired - are there any new developments that we should take note of?

It's 178 pages long, no-one could read the whole thing. At the meeting the main thrust was money and the great lack of it.

Very interesting article - a possible bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics. The article focuses on Salt Lake City, but other interested cities include Reno-Tahoe, Denver, and Bozeman, Montana. The article also says that the USOC may be the limiting factor, as THEY decide when the timing is best for a US Olympic bid. They currently feel the best chance would be the 2024 Summer Games, making it unlikely that we would host a Winter Olympics just 2 years later. It also (in part) blames the IOC/USOC conflict over revenue-sharing for NYC's failed 2012 bid and Chicago's failed 2016 bid. Another interesting factoid: 40% of USA's Winter Olympics athletes currently train in the SLC area! Salt Lake City Says It's 'Ready, Willing And Able' To Host Another Olympics by Howard Berkes / NPR.org / December 03, 2012 3:07 PM www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2012/12/03/166417818/salt-lake-city-says-its-ready-willing-and-able-to-host-another-olympics

Wonder who the record holder is for the oldest person attending a U.S. Winter Olympic game?

Different country, same story. No respect for skaters who choose to train outside of the box, at their own expense! "Like" your Shani comment!

Geez, these guys are treated like they're slave labor. When it comes right down to it, it's not like the athletes are football or basketball players- part of an actual team sport. These athletes compete individually for themselves, and yet speedskating NGB's get to dictate these athletes entire lives as if they are indentured servants. Can you imagine a figure skater being told who or where they could train? It is outrageous! I especially liked the "we're just adhering to 'the Rules' excuse by the Canadian NGB". Yeah, you know, those rules that perpetually and arbitrarily change at a drop of a hat to keep the athletes under their boot. Sorry Canada Speedskating, we don't buy it as justification for behaving like a pvtz. These speedskating entities have WAY too much power for what they give to the athletes in return.

Re: General SST Chat
For all of us who are reeling from the revelations of how NGB's ( particularly SST/LT) operate - this is nothing new. The Olympics were conceived and developed from an immense international pool of corruption from the start. There are many books which I have read and recommend that expose this history (Dishonored Games:Corruption,Money and Greed at the Olympics, Lords of the Rings, many others.) Those in power mentor and promote their "clones" and perpetuate the system. There is no legal recourse as the Olys are world inclusive and no country can claim jurisdiction to pursue action. The IOC knows it is immune to any laws and acts accordingly. This mentality infiltrates down to NGB's. To my knowldege the only sport that is fairly independent of an NGB is Snowboarding. Due to the nature and the unique popularity of the sport - the "stars" formed their own "organization". No NGB had any power over them as they were a "new" entity and had multiple sponsers pursuing them for their youthful demographics - in other words they had their own "funding" independent of NGB's in the same way Shani is able to train on his own terms.
Shani, APTE, and SLI should be the handwritng on the wall for USS!
SLC for another Olys? I don't think so - the 2002 Olys are on record as the most corrupt and bribe-ridden Olympics of all time, to the extent that the US judicial system sought action with criminal charges. Don't forget - that was when the French Figs judge got a slap on the wrist for throwing her votes.

I think the oldest Winter Oly competitor was a bobsleder in his 40's. I seem to remember he retired after his 2010 run...anyone recall that? On a side note, my doctor said today that I'm doing really well for someone with the kind of concussion/brain injury I had in October. At least partly due to my excellent physical condition....which I attribute to short track! I was a couch potato until age 54 when I laced those skates for someone to tow me out on the ice. (I couldn't even stand up!) So its never too late folks to take up your dream~
