Here's some other stuff you might find interesting - about how the competition will be run:
Today there were Skate-In 9-Lap Time Trials. Skaters who met certain qualifications - but who had not otherwise qualified to compete - were able to skate a 9-Lap TT. Those who met the qualifying time moved on to Friday's Time Trials. I'm not sure what the results were, nor who might have skated today, but we'll obviously know tomorrow!
Tomorrow (Friday) will ONLY be time trials.
First is the 9-lap TT, which determines the Top 16 who will go on to the main competition with a chance to earn the title of US Champion. Those who do not qualify can compete in Group 2 (if there are enough of them). The Group 2 skaters are not eligible for the World Cups/Championships or the US Championship title.
The Top 16 (per gender) in the 9LTT will then move on to the 4-Lap Time Trial - if I'm not mistaken, this 4LTT determines seeding for the rest of the competition.
In both the 9LTT and the 4LTT, skaters will earn points toward the Championship based on their placement in each TT. The points are HALF of those that will be awarded in Sat/Sun's distance races.
On Saturday, there will be the 1500M and the 500M - on Sunday, they'll skate the 1000M and the 3000M.
The skater with the most points wins the Championship.
For the Winter World Cups (6 skaters): If the Fall process holds true, the Top 4 get automatic slots, and the final 2 are discretionary picks.
For the World Championships (5 skaters): If last year holds true, the Top 4 get automatic slots and the final skater is a discretionary pick. HOWEVER, I think that it could be 3 automatic, 2 discretionary this year. I don't remember where I saw that - somebody correct me if I'm wrong.
Sunday's schedule also has the relays. This is an exhibition, with no points awarded - but lots of fun to watch!

The ST Regs for this season - Top 3 (in final classification) qualify for individual & relay races ("assuming USS qualifies a relay team") & the ST committee has the discretion to select 2 (men & women) to fill the 4th & 5th spots.

Here's the link to Tony Chung's spreadsheet of today's Time Trial results. There's a menu at the bottom of the page that you can click for results from all of today's events.
More later, but it's dinnertime!

Oops! Thanks for the rescue on the link, BBB - I guess I got in too big a hurry! I hope you don't mind, but I modified your link so that it would be clickable, rather than a copy & paste. If you click the 'insert hyperlink' button above (the button that looks like the earth) - and then put your link between the tags, it'll work. I've found that I always have to take this extra step with an https link. Another "Thank You", BBB, about the World Championship selection process info - you always come through! ;D

Well, before I turn in for the night, I want to give a short report on the happenings of the day.
If the competition ended today, this is who would qualify for the Winter Season:
World Cups:
Ladies - Lana Gehring; Jessica Smith; Alyson Dudek; Emily Scott + 2 discretionary picks
Men - Simon Cho; Jonathan Garcia; Robert Lawrence; Travis Jayner + 2 discretionary picks
World Championships: (USA has qualified 3 skaters for individual events for both Ladies and Men)
Ladies - Lana Gehring; Jessica Smith; Alyson Dudek + 2 discretionary picks to compete in the relay
Men - Simon Cho; Jonathan Garcia; Robert Lawrence + 2 discretionary picks to compete in the relay
--------------------------
In the 9 Lap Time Trial to determine the Top 16, there were only 14 skaters for the ladies - therefore all of them qualified for the Top 16 and will continue throughout the weekend.
The men's competition was a bit tougher. There were 25 skaters, but only 16 moved on. Tony's spreadsheet (link is listed upthread) will separate the 2 groups.
Congrats to those who made the podium:
9LTT Ladies: 1) Lana Gehring; 2) Jessica Smith; 3) Katherine Reutter
9LTT Men: 1) Jonathan Garcia; 2) Simon Cho; 3) Travis Jayner
4LTT Ladies: 1) Jessica Smith; 2) Lana Gehring; 3) Alyson Dudek
4LTT Men: 1) Simon Cho; 2) Robert Lawrence; 3) Kyle Uyehara
---------------------------------------
The men's Time Trials turned out to be a 'Third Time's The Charm' for 2 skaters - Adam Callister and Barry Winslow.
As the rules were explained to me:
In the Time Trials, the skaters may request a re-skate. They can do this twice in each TT distance, for any reason. However, they must request the re-skate BEFORE they leave the ice - i.e., they can't just sit back and watch the other skaters, then decide their time isn't good enough, and ask to skate again.
First, Adam had a run of bad luck in the 9LTT. He hit blocks twice in his first run - requested a re-skate - fell in his second run - requested a re-skate - then had a good run that qualified him for the Top 16.
Then it was Barry's turn in the 4LTT... he was having a good run in his pairing with Levi Kirkpatrick, but Levi slipped and did about 6 spins trying to stay on his feet, then another set of pirouettes to 'wind down'. It was quite impressive, and we were thankful that Levi avoided injury - but in the process, he loosened a banner on the pads that flung out into Barry's path.
For safety reasons, the officials stopped the race - and both Barry and Levi requested a re-skate. Levi qualified in his re-skate, but Barry fell, and again requested a re-skate. Barry DID qualify in his final run!
We're all having a wonderful time connecting with old friends, and making new ones - I'm hoping that 'Mayhem' will stay home from the races tomorrow...
