This thread will be used for discussion and trip-planning for World Short Track Championships (March 9-11, 2012).
Discuss any topics related to this event - trip-planning, pre-competition, post-competition, and 'Game Day' chat!
Before making travel arrangements, double-check with USS and ISU official schedules.
For those who are planning to attend the event, pertinent information gathered here - as it becomes available - will be summarized IN THIS ORIGINAL POST (scroll down) for quick-reference.
Please share any info that will be of help those who will be attending the event and/or following along online!-------------------------------- MEDIA LINKS; TV COVERAGE; WEBCASTS, LIVE FAN CHAT, ETC.:WE HAVE LIVE VIDEO - THANK YOU, CHINA!!! We've found 3 different ways to access Chinese station CCTV-5. If they're broadcasting, chances are that at least ONE of the following players will work for you. - 1) This one is from our Chinese contributor, 'dose', who patiently worked with us last night until we finally got it!
a) Go to: www.zhibowu.com/zhibo/shty.html# b) Just below the colorful ads, on the left side, you'll see a series of boxes: PPS / PPlive / UUSee / Sopcast / 无插件 c) Click the box with the Chinese characters "无插件", and the stream will start
- 2) Credit for finding this site goes British skater Jon Eley who posted it on Tony's Twitter:
a) Go to: watch.squidtv.net/asia/china.html b) Scroll down to find CCTV-5 (about midway down the page) c) Select a speed for your player (most of us chose 700) d) If you get a prompt, click 'Allow' - a Windows Media Player will appear, and you should start getting video feed
- 3) This option is the one we used last year - it worked on Day 1, but the CCTV-5 channel was not on the lineup last night. It requires the download of a TVU player:
a) Download the TVU player (certified 'safe' by my security software): download.cnet.com/TVUPlayer/3000-13632_4-10584888.html b) Click 'Run' whenever prompted c) When the player appears, you'll see a drop-down menu in the upper left - choose the 'Chinese' language options d) If CCTV-5 is available, you'll see it among the choices down the left side - click it, and your video stream will start
Tony did a live voicecast on Day 1, but not last night. Note that it's NOT a simulcast, so you'll still need to hook up to one of the video streams above. If he does one tonight, you'll find it at: www.ustream.tv/channel/live-voicecast PARTICIPATING SKATERS:Ladies:Lana Gehring (individual distances) Alyson Dudek (individual distances) Jessica Smith (individual distances) Emily Scott (relay) Tamara Frederick (relay) Men:Simon Cho (individual distances) Travis Jayner (individual distances) Jordan Malone (individual distances) J.R. Celski (relay) Kyle Carr (relay) EVENT SCHEDULE AND TIME ZONE CONVERSIONS:NOTE: Our time change on Saturday night (moving our clocks forward) shouldn't affect the posted start timesShanghai is 13 hours ahead of EST; 16 hours ahead of PST. The current ISU schedule is as follows: Day 1 (Thursday night in USA):Today's racing session should last about 4 hours... 1500M - Men's & Ladies' Heats, Semifinals, Finals Ladies' 3000M Relay Semifinals Start Time: 1:00pm (Shanghai) = Midnight EST; 11pm CST; 10pm MST; 9pm PST Day 2 (Friday night in USA):Today's racing session should last about 5 hours... 500M - Men's & Ladies' Prelims, Heats, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Finals Men's 5000M Relay Semifinals Start Time: 1:00pm (Shanghai) = Midnight EST; 11pm CST; 10pm MST; 9pm PST Day 3 (Saturday night in USA):Today's racing session should last about 6 hours... 1000M - Men's & Ladies' Prelims, Heats, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Finals Ladies' 3000M Relay Finals Men's 5000M Relay Finals Start Time: 10:00am (Shanghai) = 9pm EST; 8pm CST; 7pm MST; 6pm PST LINKS TO WATCH FOR MORE INFORMATION:Official Website: www.shorttrack2012.com/3/2011/0928/1.htmlISU Short Track Speedskating Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/ISUShortTrackSpeedSkatingENTRIES AND SCORING:Note that we’ll be entering 3 men and 3 ladies for the individual events – here’s why: Countries are normally allowed 2 entries in each distance – but some are able to qualify a third skater. In order to qualify 3 skaters, a country must have had at least 2 skaters in the top 16 in the previous year’s World Championships – and at least one of those 2 skaters must have earned Final Points (i.e., making it into the Final). There is a separate computation for each gender. In last year’s World Championships, Katherine Reutter and Lana Gehring made the Top 16 and Katherine got Final points, so we qualified 3 ladies for the individual distances this year. For the men, all 3 of our men - Simon Cho, Jeff Simon and Travis Jayner finished in the top 16 last year, and 2 two of them (Simon & Jeff) earned Final Points – therefore we qualified to race 3 men in each distance. The remaining members of the team will skate in the relays. The 3 skaters per gender chosen for this weekend's competition is (technically) at the coaches' discretion – but the USA uses the order of finish at US Championships to determine those skaters. It must be the same skaters all weekend. They can't have different skaters for each event as in World Cup competition. Therefore, for most countries, they will choose the skaters that the coaches feel are the best all-around skaters at the moment. POINTS: Skaters in the 1500M, the 500M and the 1000M Finals will gain points based on the following scale (assuming it's the same as last year): 1st - 34 2nd - 21 3rd - 13 4th - 8 5th - 5 6th - 3 7th - 2 8th - 1 After all 3 races, the top 8 skaters who have earned Final Points (per gender) will skate in the grueling 3000M, which often determines the overall winner. In order to keep this race from going at a snail's pace at the start, there is a bonus of 5 points awarded to the skater at the lead after the first 1000M (9 laps). FYI, in the past, these 5 points have made the difference in who wins the World Championship! The relay is raced as a stand-alone event - coaches' discretion as to which of the alternate skaters to enter in each round. If I have any of this wrong, I'd welcome a correction!RESULTS:www.sportresult.com/federations/ISU/ShortTrack/Results.aspx?evt=11212100000006VENUE INFORMATION:TICKET INFO:HOTEL SUGGESTIONS & INFO:'PRACTICAL' INFO - CLOTHING, CAMERAS, WHAT TO BRING, WHAT NOT TO BRING...HOW TO MEET UP WITH OTHER FANS:TRANSPORTATION TIPS (GROUND AND AIR):SIGHTSEEING IDEAS:WEATHER REPORTS:CARPOOLING/ROOM-SHARING CONNECTIONS:LINKS FOR RESULTS WHEN THE EVENT HAS CONCLUDED:[/img]

Hmm, I have a strong feeling John-Henry Krueger will be the fifth member unless he opts to only do the Junior World Championships. It's a mix up with the ladies though.

Well, bummer...The World Championships aren't listed as a free broadcast from ISU (as the World Cups were)... The good news:It IS listed on the ISU Pay Channel for $9.50. (A bargain, considering the Figure Skating events go for $18.50) livemanager.eurovision.edgesuite.net/isu/pay/index.htmlThe bad news:If you follow the instructions to "Test your access to this product before purchasing, country access restrictions apply", you'll see that it will not be available in the USA.

According to a tweet from Kyle Carr, he will be the fifth member going to Worlds for the men. Yesterday a guest poster on our Dordrecht results thread had an interesting observation - he/she said to take a look at the invite list for AmCup Final, which would give an 'educated guess' about the World Champ's team. John-Henry and Kimberly were the only World Cup skaters on the list. I know that as a World Cup medalist, many of us expected that John-Henry would be selected. But the guest poster correctly noted that the 4th and 5th members were relay only - Kimberly was not used in the relays at all during WC's 5 & 6, and John-Henry was used only once. Kyle Carr skated every round in both World Cups, and Tamara skated all but one. Looking at it in that light, the choices of Kyle and Tamara are reasonable and predictable. USS says they'll be running an advance story on the World Champs on Monday with the roster and an event schedule. Check their Facebook page - I'm sure they'll note it there when it's announced: www.facebook.com/home.php#!/USSpeedskating

We're being shut out???!!! So it's back to being stuck with the (very badly) blinking numbers. I just love how they go from lap 2 to lap 7 in one second. heads really should roll for this...

Are you interested in the opening ceremony? Who do you wanna watch the opening ceremony? I saw some articles from a press conference, it said that there are highlights on the opening ceremony. The following are the details: The opening ceremony will consist of three parts. The first part will be a performance by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, called “Elements of Ice;” the second part will be the International Skating Union’s ceremony; and the third part will be a gala performance that tells an inspiring story. It will show the beauty of speed, strength, passion and friendship, as well as aspirations and glories on ice. The first chapter of the performance is called “Ice—Dream.” It portrays an ice fairy growing up and achieving her dreams in the ice rink; the second chapter is called “Ice-Romance” and it displays the elegance, romance, harmony and beauty of the ice world; and the third chapter is called “Ice—Carnival.” It is the gathering of Chinese and foreign athletes in Shanghai. There will be three highlights in the opening ceremony. First, we have an excellent team behind the scene. It is the same people who organized the opening and closing ceremonies of the Shanghai Expo 2010 and last year’s FINA World Championships. Second, we have a strong team of performers. Olympic champions Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo and celebrated singers such as Liao Changyong will perform in the opening ceremony. And the third, the Shanghai element will be felt throughout the show. More than 30 Shanghai children aged 7 to 12 will skate in the rink to show their love for ice sports. I heard the 2010 Olympic Winter Games Figure skating pairs champions Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo, Ice queue slippery world champion Finland The team will participate in the show, which will debut the world's highest level queue slide show in the country. If you are interested you may concerned about the skating show on the 8th 19:30pm beijing time. I looked a web stream, I don't know you can watch it just like before the same, it also watch all races. sports.cntv.cn/live/wafe3/index.shtmlFYI, The C5 television channel is very geliable, it will have a super big Live, start from preliminaries! It is another a watch way as long as it is not shut out for you. A few days ago, I try look for SBS version stream for you, but I don't find it, it is pity. ISU now haven't post the competitions time table, I looked a schedule for it. www.shorttrack2012.com/en/schedule/index.shtml It is displayed is beijing time. This is just a approximate time, Live playlist follow it.

Thanks, dose! The schedule shows that the opening ceremonies start at 7:30pm Thursday night (Shanghai time), so that would be, 3:30am Thursday morning PST; 6:30am EST. I don't think I'll be getting up that early, except for the racing, but maybe some of our East Coast readers will be able to see it! Thank you also for the schedule. It looks like racing will start at about 1:00pm Shanghai time each day. So the first races will start TOMORROW NIGHT (Thursday) for us in the USA at about Midnight EST; 11pm CST; 10pm MST; 9pm PST. The official ISU schedule and heat lineups will surely be posted within the next 24 hours: www.sportresult.com/federations/ISU/ShortTrack/If anyone in the USA is able to get dose's cntv link to work during the races, please let us know!
