"After Olympic champion Yang Yang's retirement, Wang Meng had become the leader of the team," said Zhao. Wang Meng, short track star, doubtful for Sochi Olympics
Chinese short track speed skater Wang Meng broke an ankle in training Wednesday and will probably miss the Olympics, according to reports out of China.
Wang, a six-time Olympic medalist, collided with a teammate in training, according to Xinhua News Agency, quoting the head of Chinese winter sports administration.
“If she receives this kind of surgery, Wang will have to be sidelined for at least six to eight weeks,” said Liu Yasen, Chinese weightlifting team doctor, according to Xinhua.
Wang, 28, won gold, silver and bronze in Torino in 2006 and triple gold in Vancouver in 2010. She is the most decorated female Olympic short track speed skater (China’s retired Yang Yang A also has six medals, but two gold) and two medals behind Apolo Ohno, who is the most decorated man.
She was likely to at least match Ohno’s eight Olympic medals, being the reigning overall world champion, clear favorite in the 500m and expected to be part of reigning Olympic champion China’s team in the 3000m relay.
In China, Wang is known for her fiery demeanor off the ice as much as her dominance on it.
In 2012, she returned from a 13-month suspension after reportedly punching a Chinese team official in a late-night drunken scuffle.
