Chinese differ over Olympic champ's expulsion from national team By Sportswriter Cao Jianjie BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Since Wang Meng was kicked out of the short track speed skating national team on Thursday, Chinese sports fans have been divided into two camps, with one hailing the "right decision" by the sports authorities and the other blasting at unfair punishment on the country's most decorated winter Olympian. The four-time Olympic gold medalist was expelled from the national team for a fist-flying brawl with world champion-turned team manager Wang Chunlu. The manager said Wang Meng violated the team disciplines and punched her first when the "talk" went awry, while Wang Meng admitted her failure to return to the team before a curfew but said the manager threw the first punch. "Wang Meng is seen as a role model of the Chinese youth and her fight with the team manager was wrong," said Lu Qin, a math teacher who skated in the rink of a Beijing downtown shopping mall. "She deserved the punishment and the Chinese winter sports governing body made the right decision," added Lu. When asked about the possibility that the team manager might hit the athlete first, the 54-year-old Lu said: "The team manager is not only an official but also a teacher. A student should never hit his or her teacher in any circumstances." A younger skating fan disagreed with Lu. "The punishment was wrong and disgusting," Cui Jing, a keen lover of skating and skiing, told the Xinhua reporter. "Why did Wang Chunlu walk away unpunished? As I know, she is an incompetent manager who usually made things worse." "There isn't a bit of fairness in the winter sports authorities' decision. The fair decision could be like this: Wang Meng is out of the team and Wang Chunlu steps down as the team manager." Wang Meng, who won four golds, one silver and one bronze in the two Olympics, had been suspended since the incident during a summer training camp in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao on July 24. Wang Meng accidentally cut her hands on a shattered television screen and needed dozens of stitches after the incident. Wang's good friend, men's skater Liu Xianwei, was also expelled from the national team as the Chinese Winter Sports Administrative Center said, he was also involved in the brawl and damaged hotel property. Olympic champion Zhou Yang had threatened to quit the national team to side with Wang Meng but she was persuaded by officials to remain with the squad, according to a teammate of Zhou's who asked not to be named. Shanghai-based Xinmin Evening News doubted the fairness of the Chinese winter sports body, saying sacking Wang Meng and keeping Wang Chunlu will hurt the organization's credibility. "The handling of Qingdao incident left us such an impression: the athletes are a vulnerable and unprotected group, while the team officials stay high up," commented the popular evening newspaper. Li Yan, head coach of the short track speed skating team, told state television CCTV that expelling Wang didn't solve deeper problems within the team. "One year after winning four gold medals in the Olympics, the Chinese national team has turned into a negative example. It definitely needs deep reflection," she said. Li told Xinhua that Wang Chunlu, as the only official in the short track speed skating team, used "inappropriate ways of management". "Wang Meng has a hot temper," said Li, "that made her a great fighter in the rink, but also made her easily lose control off the rink." "Wang Chunlu is a manager who can make a hot-tempered Wang Meng even hotter," added Li. Wang told Xinhua on Saturday that she had done nothing wrong and "is true to herself". "I manage the team according to the instructions from the State General Administration of Sport and the Winter Sports Administrative Center," said Wang. "I manage the team with a view to the development and the future of the team. I am a responsible manager." news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/china/2011-08/06/c_131033406.htm

Chinese speed skating team manager leaves after internal brawl BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese skating team manager Wang Chunlu, a former Olympic bronze medallist, has been transferred from the position after an internal brawl with four-time Winter Olympic champion Wang Meng, China's General Administration of Sport announced here on Monday. "We have been critical of senior officials from the winter sports administration center and team manager Wang Chunlu (for their inappropriate methods and mistakes in team management)," read a statement released by the winter sports administration center. "Wang Chunlu has been transferred from her position in the national team." Earlier this month, Wang Meng was expelled from the Chinese national short track speed skating team and had been banned from international and national competitions for a drunken brawl with Wang Chunlu, which greatly mired the image of the team, at a training camp based in the eastern Chinese city of Qingdao on July 24. The most renowned winter Olympic athlete of China punched Wang Chunlu after being blamed for not returning on time in a night out with five teammates. Male speed skater Liu Xianwei, who was alleged to have stirred things up, was also ruled out of national team. The argument between Wang Meng and Wang Chunlu turned out to cause physical injury. "After the accident, we realized that there were a lot of problems in the management of the team and senior officials from the winter sports administration center. The team manager is responsible for that. We will try to make amendment in team management." Well known for bad temper, Wang Meng was sent to a hospital to get stitched up cuts inflicted from smashing furniture in her dormitory following the brawl. It was said Wang had been visibly drunk at the time of the incident. The team's two-month summer training had to be cut short and all the athletes returned to Beijing earlier than scheduled. Since then, Wang Chunlu had been on a sick leave approved by administration center. It is not rare to see Wang Meng land herself in trouble. She was expelled from the national team for six months in 2007 for doubting her coach's tactics at the Asian Winter Games. Early June this year, Wang Meng hit the headline after she and her teammates clashed with security guards who accused them of making too much noise on street late night in a tour city of Lijiang in Yunan province. Wang Meng is China's most prolific winter Olympic athlete, winning three gold medals at the Vancouver Games last year and one gold, one silver and one bronze in Turin 2006. Last year, Wang Meng beat China's tennis player Li Na, winner of this year's French open, to lift the title of China's "female athlete of the year". Wang Chunlu was appointed as the team manager after she retired from a successful short track speed skating career, which sees her to win three world championship golds and a 2002 Olympic bronze medal. news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/china/2011-08/16/c_131050953.htm

I'm still saddened by this whole thing - just as I was by the turmoil with Korea last year.
The part of the above article that resonated with me was this:
Li (italics added by Laura: Li Yan is the Chinese National Team coach, and was USA's coach in the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympics) told Xinhua that Wang Chunlu, as the only official in the short track speed skating team, used "inappropriate ways of management".
"Wang Meng has a hot temper," said Li, "that made her a great fighter in the rink, but also made her easily lose control off the rink."
"Wang Chunlu is a manager who can make a hot-tempered Wang Meng even hotter," added Li.
---------------
A very diplomatic observation - noncommittal, but says much at the same time...

The matter past so long, Already did not think that was very regrettable. The predetonation is good with compared to the late eruption. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise. I think the events and that turmoil with Korea of last year are dissimilar. you see, Whether that Lijiang event or this event, the chinese players all stood together. From this point to say, this spirit of solidarity is very difficult to be defeated. Even if the "civil war" play very intensely, but "foreign wars" also will fight alongside. Does not occur in order to prevent own partners succeed and cheap to outsiders situation. I have a bit of the different views slightly. I think that Violence with Violence's way isn't good. Should not limit person's individuality development, however if only is simple cater to the hot temper person, although able to get some easy and comfortable atmosphere, but this is actually irresponsible. Not only encouraged the bad atmosphere, moreover actually to this person's personality development is harmful. So for them may not be a bad thing! Realize and introspect with life, for the future also will be precious wealth.

China's a force to be reckoned with, and it's good for our USA team to skate with them as much as possible - you've gotta 'see' the best to 'be' the best...

Thanks for the pics of Meng Wang in Canada - when she was here in SoCal training, everyone liked her very much. Also, I'm sorry to hear about Han Jialiang - he was a good skater... good enough that I learned to spell his name without double-checking! Best of luck to him in this new phase of his life.

Yes! The news said that they will go to the United States participate the new season's first World Cup competition at Salt Lake City. Wang Meng is also popular at there. Everyone is friendly! I like Han Jialiang too. I feel he is a true man! Because he was cut by opponent in last season, the subjective media asked him the opponent's behavior, He said that player was not intentional. After he also participated on the Asian Winter Games, however net users scolded him malicious pushing opponent. After the race, the opponent had a little sliding collision to him when he and teammate waved flag. Maybe not intentional. Although then he was a little surprised, but he all didn't seriously. He also told Liang Wenhao the competition do not grudge when Liang Wenhao was push in 500m semifinal on the 2011 world championships. And 2010 Winter Olympics 5000m relay final, He only said himself problem, and has never said that the other opponent is not good. So I think this person is really good! Now praise him, otherwise future does not have the opportunity. but It's a pity he retired, He could do better!
