Alex skated in the 9 Lap Time Trial at US Championships, Dec 16-19 in Salt Lake City – In his 9 Lap Time Trial, Alex had 3 strokes of bad luck. He fell in his first attempt and was given a re-skate. In his second attempt, the laps were counted wrong - he skated an additional lap, and was given another re-skate. Sadly, he fell in his last attempt, and didn’t make the Top 16. He did get to compete the rest of the weekend in Group B, meaning that he gained some valuable racing experience, but was not eligible for the US Championship. Alex has an awesome personality, and gained a whole host of new fans during the competition, despite his 9LTT 'dark cloud of misfortune'! Here are his Group B Results: 1500M – 3rd (A Final) 500M – 1st (B Final) 1000M – 1st (B Final) 3000M – 2nd (A Final) Alex leads Dan Fiorenza and Brett Perry at US Championships, 2010. I always look forward to seeing what skinsuit Alex is gonna be wearing… I hear he designs them himself ‘cause he just likes the fun of it - he’s a crowd pleaser, and is one of the nicest guys with one of the nicest families you’ll ever meet! Here are his results from the AmCup Final (Wausau, WI, March 11-13, 2011): 11th Overall 1500M – 3rd (B Final) 500M – 4th (C Final) 1000M – 3rd (C Final) 1500M Superfinal – 6th (A Final) Alex in the lead at the American Cup Final - Wausau, WI, March 2011. I'm pretty sure I saw Alex volunteering at WC1 (with a buzz cut, so he looked different)...
Anyhow, it's his birthday!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ALEX!

Alex was chasing blocks during US Championships, and we lured him to the side to ask him a few questions. He's doing well in long track, so it's doubtful we'll see him back on the short track anytime soon. He'll be MUCH missed, but we wish him great success in LT! If you'd like to follow Alex, he recently started a FB athlete page. It's a good read - as is typical of Alex, some of his posts will make you think, and of course, some of them will make you smile! I'm not sure if you have to be logged into FB to see it, but here's the link - he's at 65 'likes' now. Let's bump that up a bit, eh? www.facebook.com/pages/Alex-Hopp/126079420843136?ref=tsTags: Alex Hopp / Short Track Speedskating / Long Track Speedskating

In September 2008, Michelle, Karen and I attended American Cup 1 in Minneapolis, MN. It was the competition where we saw J.R. Celski make his first-ever World Cup team, and it also introduced us to another memorable young skater... I remember watching the Group 2 skaters, and wondering aloud to Michelle, "Who's the dude in the flowered skinsuit? Who'd make a guy wear that?" I was mainly there for the Group 1 skaters, but I was curious enough to look up this guy's helmet number. It was Alex Hopp - 'never heard of him, but I didn't forget the name... At the time, I didn't realize that I'd just stumbled upon one of the most colorful characters in speedskating! Alex delights in entertaining the spectators - with his custom-designed skinsuits, with his enthusiasm, and with his increasing success in the races. We've recently lost Alex to Long Track, but we wish the Long Track fans all the joy that Alex has brought to us over the years in Short Track! Here's a photo gallery that Alex put together on his FB page of his innovative skinsuits! www.facebook.com/pages/Short-Track-Speedskating/71860307108#!/media/set/?set=a.150619285055816.29672.126079420843136&type=1
