Major sporting events will return to Wausau areaBy Colby Robertson / WAOW.com / Sept 29, 2010 The Wausau area will once again host two major sporting events this winter. This is the result of the newly formed Sports Authority, a committee whose goal is to use sports to boost tourism. Two major sporting events will return to the Wausau community for the second year: The Midwest Freeze Hockey Invitational and U.S. National Short Track Speedskating Championships. Richard Barrett, Director of Sales for the North Central Convention and Visitors Bureau says, "The Olympic Committee was so pleased with it and the people who attended, athletes and their families made lots of comments, they loved it and they awarded us, which is unprecedented, two years in a row to get these events." That means, once again, thousands of athletes and spectators will travel to the area, and put money directly into the Wausau area economy. Last year, the Midwest Freeze generated an economic impact of more than $400,000. This year, they're expecting just this tournament alone to bring in more than $1 million. The Short Track Speed Skating Championships are expected to bring in athletes from 26 different states and add another $600,000 to the local economy. Bruce Miller says, "This type of event will spread out throughout the entire community, Wausau, Schofield, Rothschild, Weston and it's the type of event that can fill up all of these communities, rather than just one area, so in that regard, I would say this type of event is special."
