To get on the next WC team, do they take the top 5 in overall points?
As an example: the results right now (End of Sat racing), in order: Katherine Jessica lana Emily Ally
Simon Jeff Travis Kyle Anthony
Thanks!

Hi, '19' - my understanding is that the Top 5 Overall go to World Championships, but they send 6 to World Cups 5 & 6.
For the Fall World Cups, the 6th team member was 'selected', rather than strictly being the 6th-place finisher - not sure how that works this time around, but my guess is that it would be the same for the 6th member of World Cups 5 & 6.
In past years, only the Top TWO skate individual distances at the World Championships - the remaining team members only skate in the relay.

I'm watching the U-Stream Live. One of the women fell in the 1500 semi second group. What does booted out mean? Booting out means that the skater's lean was so far over that the boot touches the ice ...which usually means that the blade that was gripping the ice looses touch with it...and skater goes flying. Unfortunately Boots don't hold edges very well on the ice... Ice contact: Blade =Good - - - - - Boot =Bad Thanks for the clarification. Please remember that I'm new to this board and more importantly that I'm a "newbie" fan of short track. Prior to this I was just a fan of Apolo's but now I want to be a fan of short track not just Apolo.

No disrespect intended in my response, I tend to 'splain things with humor. I apologize if it seemed otherwise and you took offense.

In past years, only the Top TWO skate individual distances at the World Championships - the remaining team members only skate in the relay. Actually I'm wrong on this - I forgot that teams can earn a 3rd slot for the individual distances based on performance in the previous year's World championship. I think we DID earn the 3rd slot for both ladies and men last year. In addition, the 5th slot on the World Championships team is a 'selected' skater, rather than 5th Overall. I'll write more later - but for now, congrats to KATHERINE REUTTER on her 4th consecutive US Championship, and to JEFF SIMON on his first!

Katherine Reutter and Jeff Simon Win U.S. National Short Track Speedskating ChampionshipsLinda Jager KEARNS, Utah (December 19, 2010) - The U.S. National Short Track Speedskating Championships concluded today as Katherine Reutter (Champaign, IL) and Jeff Simon (Las Vegas, NV) skated to the national championship titles. Read More: www.usspeedskating.org/uptospeed/posts/katherine_reutter_and_jeff_simon_win_us_national_short_trac.php+++ Reutter, 2010 Olympic silver and bronze medalist, won her fourth consecutive senior national title and won both of today’s individual races - the 1000m (1:33.350) and the 3000m (5:14.207). “The 1000m is my favorite event,” said Reutter. “It’s a speedskater’s race of strategy, strength, endurance and speed.” Simon won today’s 1000m event at 1:26.688 and finished fourth in the men’s 3000m (5:00.699) distance where the field of eight skaters battled to accumulate points to secure the overall title. Simon and his friend and teammate Simon Cho (Laurel, MD) fought for overall lead throughout the weekend. “I’m very pleased that I am the national champion,” said Simon. “I had to dig deep for the victory today, but I look forward to working with my teammates to continue our winning momentum as we compete at the remaining World Cups and the World Championships.” The U.S. Short Track National Championships consisted of four individual distances and two time trials in which competitors earned points for overall classification. The 2011 World Cup Team is selected based on those rankings with the top five skaters, plus one additional discretionary selection, chosen to represent the U.S. at the ISU World Cups #5 (Moscow, Russia) and #6 (Dresden, Germany). The 2011 World Championship team roster has yet to be determined. In the above article, USS announced the official World Cup team, which jives with what Tony reported. The Top 5 overall got automatic slots, and the sixth was a 'selected' skater. For the men, that 6th slot went to Kyle Uyehara, and for the ladies, it's Morgan Izykowski. WORLD CUP MEN Jeff Simon - (US Champion - his first!) Simon Cho Travis Jayner Anthony Lobello Jonathan Garcia - congrats to Jonathan on his first National Team berth! Kyle Uyehara WORLD CUP LADIES Katherine Reutter (US Champion - her 4th!) Lana Gehring Jessica Smith Emily Scott Sarah Chen Morgan Izykowski For the World Championships, the Top 4 get automatic berths, and the 5th is a 'selected' skater. The Top 3 get to skate individual distances, and the remaining 2 skate the relay. MEN Jeff Simon - individual distances Simon Cho - individual distances Travis Jayner - individual distances Anthony Lobello - relay #5 is a selected skater, and Tony is reporting that it will be Kyle Carr LADIES Katherine Reutter - individual distances Lana Gehring - individual distances Jessica Smith - individual distances Emily Scott - relay #5 is a selected skater, not yet named Aly Dudek suited up today after yesterday's shoulder injury, but intentionally double-false-started to preserve her standing in the competition. Despite not being able to skate in 2 distances, she still finished sixth overall! Landon Hatfield - in a rather bizarre accident - was cut not once, but twice (on the chest and the top of his thigh) by the blade of a skater who tripped in front of him. An update by the rink announcer said that he was being stitched up, and was in good spirits. Heal well, Landon! Katherine Reutter had an interesting strategy in the 3000M Final - in a very slow-paced race, she went out like a rabbit and nobody gave chase. Instead of lapping the pack, she tucked in behind the group, drafting off them for the remainder of the race! The 'drama' of the day came in the men's 3000M A Final, which became a Bowling for Skaters episode - Ryan Bedford, Kyle Carr, Travis Jayner and Simon Cho all went down, and Jeff Simon narrowly avoided the melee. Ryan got a yellow card following the race, which was eventually won by Jonathan Garcia. Congratulations to all the skaters who made the team!
