Equally interesting is who is not there: Baver and Reutter. Hi, sk8er - Katherine's going to be skating - she's on the list. Eddy Alvarez didn't sign up, which was kind of a surprise. I think he's playing baseball this year, and hopefully he'll be back soon.

So I just attended the Coach's meeting - thanks to Tony & Chris Weaver (as he's the only Weaver I know of. lol).
Anyway, that rule I was freaking out about seems to be the least of our worries.
This weekend should be both exciting and dangerous.
They've basically done away with anything that could get a skater a penalty - ie. no crosstracking.
They also said that the clicking of blades is no longer considered "contact."
So the gist is now that - skaters can race how ever they want as long as there is no contact. Crosstracking is no more. Skaters can intentionally block another skater to "protect their lane" - as long as there is no contact.
There are now yellow cards and red cards and if I heard them right, a yellow card gets you knocked out of a distance and a red card gets you knocked out of the meet.
With a yellow card, you also get last place points for the distance. An example, say there are 24 skaters in one distance, you get a yellow card - you get 25th place points. Basically you lose points for the ranking you would have been at, but you don't lose all of your points.
Lastly, the lanes (for this meet only, I believe) were marked with boxes not dots so now they're supposed to pretend there are dots to mark where they will start. lol.
I think that's all. If I remember anything, I'll let you.
This weekend should be very interesting - so make sure you watch!!! :]
See you guys tomorrow!

In Milwaukeeeeeee! Had dinner with friends and Happy Hour in Wags' room, which was all decorated up for Halloween (well, it IS October!) Didn't make it over to the Pettit yet, but we're gonna try to get over there before the first AmCup warmups tomorrow morning.
We've been hearing some comments about the new rules, and it seemed to be a bit confusing. BBB, your post clarified some of my own confusion, but I suppose that seeing it applied during the races will clear some things up. Thanks for sharing!
P.S. One reminder about the new rules: This is an ISU change, not USS - so it applies to ALL countries and their skaters. The new rules will be applied to international meets as well as US meets.

We saw some families and coaches at breakfast, and the ones we talked to said that they understand the new rules and they've made sure their skaters are very clear about them too. We're off to the rink now, and will check in after the day's action!

Here's a bit about the competition today... If I'm reading/hearing the selection rules right Travis Jayner and Jeff Simon, by virtue of wins in the 1500M and 500M, respectively, have earned berths on the World Cup team for the men, and Lana Gehring won BOTH the 1500M and 500M, and looks amazing this weekend! She would get a spot on the team for the ladies. Tony Chung just posted a photo of the standings - as of right now, the top 10 are: MEN 1) Travis Jayner - 1800 2) Jeff Simon -1800 3) Simon Cho - 1280 4) Anthony Lobello - 922 5) Ryan Bedford - 738 6) Kyle Carr - 722 7) Jonathan Garcia - 524 8) Robert Lawrence - 348 9) Kyle Haun - 241 10) Chris Creveling - 237 LADIES 1) Lana Gehring - 2000 2) Alyson Dudek - 1440 3) Katherine Reutter - 1312 4) Jessica Smith - 1152 5) Morgan Izykowski - 672 6) Sarah Chen - 672 7) Emily Scott - 656 8) Tamara Frederick - 420 9) Katy Ralston - 268 10) Brittany Salmon - 193 For the entire list, see the links on Tony's shorttrackHD Twitter. There were relatively few falls/injuries, and all skaters were able to finish their races *yay!* However, there were some skaters who, due to illness or injury, had to drop out of the day's remaining races: Cherise Wilkins had a fall in the 500M QF - she finished the race, but looked pretty banged up and was later seen leaving on a stretcher. Don't know any more than that. Heal well, Cherise. Barry Winslow hit hard in the last heat of the 1500M QF's - he finished the race, but they suspected a mild concussion (in addition to wrenching his neck), so he was advised not to race the 500M. We later heard that the rules state that if you fail to start any distance, you cannot continue in the competition, so Barry is out of the meet, but will be just fine! Eun Ji Jeong stumbled off the start of one of her races and hit her knee hard - she finished the race, but did not continue in the competition. Kimberly Derrick was ill, had a difficult time in the 1500M, and did not start the 500M. If the rule (about not starting in a distance) is true, then she may be out of the competition too. Wishing a speedy recovery to all these skaters! -------------------------------- According to the schedule that was handed out Saturday morning, warmups start at 8:12am (Central) Sunday, with racing scheduled to start shortly after 9am. Don't forget to follow the action at shorttrackHD's Ustream channel!

Hi Everyone, Thanks for the summary and info about todays event...unable to watch and follow as son had major spinal surgery on Thursday and is still in hospital...so I'm there mostly...just wanted to check in and say hello and thank you for giving me a place to come and stay in touch. Love to you all and safe skating for our short trackers...is this a venue where they have adequate movable pads? You may have discussed this but I've only read this page. Will check again tomorrow night. Good for Lana...she needs a successful season...musicalmom, Karen
