Jr. World Championships start TONIGHT! If my math is right, the first events will start at about 11:45pm Thursday night, Eastern time - that's 10:45 Central; 9:45 Mountain; 8:45 Pacific... 2 links to note: The ISU site for results - (when events are taking place, you can click the 'LIVE' button for lap-by-lap results) www.sportresult.com/federations/ISU/ShortTrack/Also, there will be a blog from Pittsburgh (home of 3 of the 4 USA men's skaters) with some great personal insight from the competition at: rmuspeedskating.wordpress.com

Last night's results: Men: Robert Lawrence, Julian Wood, Cole Krueger' John-Henry Krueger Ladies: Mary Grace, Morgan Izykowski, Petra Acker; Sarah Chen (Sarah Chen and John-Henry Krueger skate the relay only) The Director's update on the RMU link (see above) was updated for last night's results: All 3 men made it out of the 1500M heats, but only Cole and Robert made it out of the SF - both made it into the Final, with Cole 6th and Robert 7th. Cole took advantage of a crash in his Semifinal heat for his advancement to the Final. Never give up! The ice is breaking up badly - both Cole and Robert went down on one knee in separate races but still managed to qualify. Morgan Izykowski had the best 1500M finish for the Ladies, but a 6th-place finish in the Semis left the USA with nobody in the Finals. Both the Ladies (1st place) and the Men (2nd place) advances in their relay Heats - the men's race wasn't pretty, but they got-'er-done! Racing resumes at about 9:45pm tonight Eastern Time (I think...).

Well, a bummer day for our Jr. Team. In Saturday's 500M, the Ladies all came in 3rd in their heats and did not advance. The men fared a bit better, with Robert Lawrence making it to the Semi-Finals, but he finished 3rd and did not advance to the Final. Cole made it through Prelims, but was eliminated in Heats, and Julian was DQ'd in Prelims. More problems in the relays - both teams have been eliminated, finishing 3rd in the Semifinals. A big problem for the men was a mistake by China in the Heats - China was able to come back well enough to earn the fastest 3rd-place slot in the Semis. This put USA in the same heat with both China and Korea, giving them a tough row to hoe... Tonight is the final day of racing - the 1000M, starting at about 9:45 Eastern Time.

After the final day of racing, our team came away with no medals, but with valuable experience and knowledge about racing against the world. In the 1000M last night, three skaters (Cole, Robert and Morgan) made it out of the Prelims, but were eliminated in the Heats - none of our skaters qualified to compete in the 1500M SuperFinal. Cole and Robert finished 11th & 12th overall out of 53 skaters, and Morgan was highest overall for the Ladies (19th out of 46). Korea dominated the competition for both the men and the ladies, with Canada and China making the podium several times as well. A lone Brit, Jack Whelbourne, medaled with a bronze in the 1500. A name to watch for the Ladies: Jinkyu Choi - she earned the gold medal in EVERY distance, and took 3rd in the 1500M SuperFinal, winning the overall championship by a sizeable margin... In closing, I like the following excerpt from The RMU blog ( rmuspeedskating.wordpress.com/ ): All the skaters have come away from the experience with their eyes opened to the depth and difficulty of the international short track world. All the skaters said that the experience has shown them that to do well in the U.S. is one thing, BUT to be successful and medal internationally is going to take a complete analysis of and rededication to what needs to be done to get to the next level. Julian Wood said, “Losing here in Taipei has shown me more than winning in the U.S. ever could”'Safe travels' to the team, the coaches, and the families returning home from Taipei! Highlights video from Jr. World Championships - I don't see any of our USA skaters in it, but it's interesting and very well done!
