....and I've heard the "airport" is a big shock for those who have never landed in a small town. Lost luggage. No computers to check out the rent cars. No pubs? Thank goodness we found the liquor store online. My buddy has been to the liquor store, and it is good. I hear the skaters ARE NOT at the Holiday Inn but most have sought refuge in quieter, calmer places other than the host hotel for USSA. Pretty much in-and-out for meetings and such. Can't say that I blame them. This is their one shot at going for the Gold. For some, it's their last opportunity. Safe, fast skating one and all.

Just an observation as I wait for the last resurfacing of the women's 9-lap trial. Tony Chung has updates FAST and LIVE...Goldrush hasn't posted any results yet, while Tony's are up-to-the-almost-minute.
So until we crash his site or twitter account, that's where the action is.

Thanks for posting the results, aaosmts19 - glad to know that y'all are able to follow Tony so closely. Every time we look over at him he's multi-tasking like a madman - he's earned his rest tonight. I may be wrong about this, but I don't believe that the videos he's taking here can be made public like the ones he took in Canada and SLC - but will be kept more as an archive or for training purposes.(?) It was a good day of racing, and it was heartbreaking to see 23 of the skaters' 2010 Olympic dreams end today - but the encouraging thing is that many of them are still very young and will give our team great strength in years to come. Jordan, Katherine, Kimberly, J.R. and Alyson Dudek all made the podium twice - Apolo (in a 'retro' skinsuit of some kind) and Anthony Lobello round out the winners for the day. One rather odd thing was that in Jeff Simon's 4-lap TT, he suddenly stopped skating, thinking that someone had told him to stop. He spoke with the officials and they did allow him a re-skate. A couple of the ladies in our group were taking photos with some very serious cameras, so I'm hoping they'll share some of them with us! I may think of more later, but that's kind of all that's coming to mind right now... EDIT: And thank you BBB for posting the new articles about Apolo, Allison & Katherine! (see their individual threads)

One last thing - I had heard that in Jeff's re-skate, he would only be awarded 16th-place points, which proved to be true, even though his time was the 10th fastest. The difference between 10th and 16th is about 100 points, but 35 is better than zero...

September 8, 2009 at 9:03 PM Ohno, Celski duel it out at short track Olympic trialsPosted by Ron Judd Apolo Anton Ohno and J.R. Celski (left and center, above, with teammate Jordan Malone), the two Seattle homeboys with arguably the best chances to snare a medal at the 2010 Winter Games, are going head to head all week in Marquette, Mich., where the U.S. Short Track Olympic Trials are under way today. The event began with a 1,000-meter time trial, wherein Celski, setting an American record, beat Ohno by more than half a second. It wasn't the first time. Celski out-dueled the soul-patched Seattle celeb -- known also for winning TV's "Dancing With the Stars," at the short track world championships in March, finishing second overall and winning gold medals in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meter relay and bronze medals in the 1,000 and 1,500. Does Ohno, now a cagey veteran at 27, have what it takes to stay with the world's young legs? We'll get some indication this week. (Don't read that much into the time-trial result; all the skaters know it's but a warmup to the main races.) It'll be a fascinating meet, with Celski, 19, who just came into his own on the international senior circuit last season, going head to head with Ohno, 27, his former idol. Both grew up in Federal Way and began their athletic careers as inline skaters. Ohno, of course, went on to five Olympic medals at Salt Lake and Turin, tying him with long-track legend Eric Heiden as the most-decorated U.S. male WInter Olympic athlete (overall title: Bonnie Blair, with six.) Celski is hoping to make his first Olympic mark just up the road in Vancouver. And if the end of last season and the beginning of this one is an indication, he's peaking at just the right time. Find a nice look at Celski, and his thoughts about competing against Ohno, in this Universal Sports piece by Meri-Jo Borzilleri. Ohno, standing out in a new red, white and blue speed suit, was upbeat tonight. "Not a bad start," he typed on his Twitter feed after the time trial. "Good thing races and time trials are two separate things. No time trials in the Olympics....pushing onward for tomorrow!" Stay tuned to Seattletimes.com and this blog throughout the week for updates. We'll be back at the Olympic Media Summit in Chicago and unable to attend the short-track trials, but will have results and comments from the skaters in coming days. Much is at stake at the trials. At the end of the week, based on total results, five men and five women will be selected to move on to compete in four World Cup events prior to the 2010 Games, which begin in February. If the U.S. qualifies a relay team for the Olympics, all 10 of those skaters will go. If not, the U.S. will send the top three men and women based on World Cup results. The final squad will be named after the fourth World Cup race in mid-November. In other words: You can increase your standing and qualify for the events of your choosing in race competitions after this week. But failure this week is not an option. If you're not in the top five, you stay home. AP photos: (top) J.R. Celski of Federal Way, center, stands on the medal stand with Apolo Anton Ohno, left, and Jordan Malone, right, after the 000-meter trial at the U.S. short track speedskating championships; (lower) Celski on the ice. - - - - - - Those are mighty spiffy helmet covers and I really like the podium background!

Greetings from Marquette at the end of Day 2. What a day it was and I am sure its a race that will be discussed for quite some time.
Goodtimes took some outstanding pictures of the Day 2 500 Final that was a heart-breaker for everyone concerned--the skaters, their families and the fans. With Apolo, JR, Jeff and Simon Cho in this race we knew it would be the race of the evening. We are lucky the pictures have tremendous quality. Check out the pictures and you decide.
The Thursday rest day could not come at a better time.
Many thanks to goodtimes for sharing. Please understand that these photos are for use at this site only.

I can't wait to see those pictures! Yes, that 500M Final was crazy - full of both heartbreak and drama, and it's quite obvious that this is no ordinary ST competition. Hopefully everyone was following Tony's 'tweets' all day - the surprise of the competition thus far (at least for me) is Simon Cho, who has come back strong after a season in the shadows. Simon is most definitely 'in it to win it' - great job! And the 'bionic woman', Allison Baver, got the silver medal in the 1500M#1 - WOW! As Gasp said, I'm happy for everyone that tomorrow is a day off! ------------------------------------------- TODAY'S WINNERS: 1500M LADIES Gold: REUTTER, Katherine Silver: BAVER, Allison Bronze: DERRICK, Kimberly 1500M MEN Gold: CELSKI, JR Silver: OHNO, Apolo Bronze: MALONE, Jordan 500M LADIES Gold: DUDEK, Alyson Silver: GEHRING, Lana Bronze: DERRICK, Kimberly 500M MEN Gold: CHO, Simon Silver: OHNO, Apolo Bronze: SIMON, Jeff -------------------------------------------- I've posted my personal computations of the current Distance Rankings, which include the 'crossover' points that the official totals don't show yet: therockerforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=trips&action=display&thread=411I'm not sure these numbers are correct, but they're my best guess as to how things add up as of right now!
