The 'Oval' made an early impact on some of our LT contenders! Learning to skate at Olympic Oval By Jennifer Gustavson / SLC Tribune / July 7, 2010 When West Jordan’s Jerica Tandiman watched world-class athletes race on TV on the ice just miles from her home in 2002, something clicked. For Kearns’ Parker Vance, who grew up in a house adjacent to the Olympic Oval in Kearns, the moment hit him more like the bulldozer that sat next to the playground in his yard as the Oval underwent initial construction. In those moments, Tandiman and Vance knew they wanted to be speedskaters, though neither had ever laced up a pair of ice skates. The Oval, dubbed “the fastest ice on Earth” at the 2002 Salt Lake Games, is now the training home to athletes from all over the world. But Tandiman and Vance are home-grown, having gotten their start in the Oval’s Learn to Speedskate program. “All I had to do was walk across the street,” said Vance, now 23. “I was hooked right away.” Now, both are members of the U.S. National speedskating team — Vance a two-time member of the senior team and Tandiman one of the newest and youngest members of the junior team. Both have aspirations to reach the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. Read More: www.sltrib.com/csp/cms/sites/sltrib/pages/printerfriendly.csp?id=49869061Tags: Short Track Speedskating
