Posting this in both 'The Italians' and 'Our Canadian Friends': Will there be an Orléans athlete in Vancouver? by Dan Plouffe - Oct 22, 2009 See the complete article at: www.eastottawa.ca/article-391854-Will-there-be-an-Orleans-athlete-in-Vancouver.html... The Orléans athlete who actually stands the best chance at competing in Vancouver is short-track speedskater Nicolas Bean – but he won’t be sporting red and white. Instead, the 22-year-old former Gloucester Concordes star would wearing a deep blue skinsuit for Team Italy.
Bean was able to find a solution to the problem of being just one of many talented athletes in Canada. He took advantage of his ancestry and acquired dual Canadian-Italian citizenship a couple years ago.
After the first two World Cup races of the year, Bean is tied with the other top Italian skater for 13th in the world rankings for the 1,500 metres. The Italian relay team is also ranked fourth, with eight spots available for the Olympics.
Should Bean replicate those results in the next two World Cups – the only ones that count towards Olympic qualifying – he’ll be on his way to Vancouver.
Of course, that’s when Bean would run into the other Canadians that were higher than him on the depth chart, but there’s no doubt he’s already proven he’s one of the best in the world.

Here are some of my screen grabs from ISU's WC3 (Nagoya, 2011) broadcast... I'm gonna start with a nice photo of Elena Viviani at her ladies' relay gold medal flower ceremony. Elena is an excellent photographer, and has been very generous to our forum with her photos - it's only fair to capture some of HER 'golden moments' with her team! Elena Viviani wins ladies' relay gold with Team Italy! Team Italia had their Olympic Trials this past weekend, and here are the Top 6. I don't know if there are 'discretionary selections' - but if not, these are the Top 6 who will compete in the Fall World Cups to qualify their country's skaters for the Winter Olympics in Sochi. I'm also assuming that if they qualify a full team, it'll be the Top 5 that will go to Sochi, with #6 as an alternate(?) Of note are: Arianna Fontana - the only ST woman to medal in Vancouver 2010 from any country OTHER than China, Korea, Canada and USA Elena Viviani - the gracious source of some really great photos we've posted here at BB Yuri Confortola - came back from a devastating and possibly career-ending broken leg a few years ago (ala Baver/Ahn) Anthony Lobello - USA Olympian (2006 Torino) with dual citizenship who returned to 'The Motherland' for this Olympic cycle Tommaso Dotti - fantastic young man who lived with our family in summer 2010 as he trained in SoCal (before he got 'famous'!) Edoardo Reggiani - in addition to excellent skating, I can vouch for his driving skills LADIES: 1) Arianna Fontana 2) Martina Valcepina 3) Elena Viviani 4) Lucia Peretti 5) Cecilia Maffei 6) Ylenia Tota MEN: 1) Yuri Confortola 2) Anthony Lobello 3) Tommaso Dotti 4) Nicola Rodigari 5) Davide Viscardi 6) Edoardo Reggiani Here's the link to a photo of the Top 3 Ladies (L to R: Viviani; Fontana; Valcepina) www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10201188909076655&set=a.10201188890716196.1073741858.1588355487&type=3&theaterHere's the link to a photo of the Top 3 Men (L to R: Dotti; Confortola; Lobello) www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10201188909356662&set=a.10201188890716196.1073741858.1588355487&type=3&theaterThe entire album (from Roberto Sighel) is public, but you may have to log into Facebook to see it.

The Italian Men's team had a tough weekend in Torino - Nicola Rodigari broke his ankle and Tommy Dotti got a bad cut and needed medical attention on the ice. Every parent's nightmare, as Tommy's dad was announcing the races at the time it happened.
Happily, Tommy is back in the lineup this week in Kolomna, Russia - Nicola, not so lucky.
