Canadian author Lisa Bowes along with illustrator James Hearne have created a children's book series called Lucy Tries Sports to encourage actively living while introducing kids to sports they may not know about. Ahead of the 2014 Olympics she released "Lucy Tries Luge" and just last week, ahead of the upcoming world cup she released another book called “Lucy Tries Short Track”.
It's a cute little book and as part of the launch Marc Gagnon, Mathieu Turcotte, François Hamelin and Robert Dubreuil (1992 long track Olympian and chief executive officer of the Fédération de patinage de vitesse du Québec) read the book to Kindergarteners and 1st graders at a school in Montreal and 8000 books were donated to the English School Board in Montreal.

The selection procedures are a little more complicated than just the top 6 go. The World Championship team is based on the top 4 of each gender based on performance at the Fall World Cups Selections or at the National Qualifier (20%) and Canadian Senior Championships (80%) + a discretionary selection and then an additional athlete will be chosen for the World Cup team. Then 5 athletes of each gender not selected to the world cup team are chosen for the Universiade games. The whole thing is a little confusing for me to calculate so I'll just wait until the teams are announced.
UPDATE: 4 men and 4 women have been named to the World Cup and World Championship team. The rest of the team and the third skaters skating individual distances will be announced later.
Men Charles Hamelin (individual distances) Samuel Girard (individual distances) Patrick Duffy Guillaume Bastille | Women Marianne St-Gelais (individual distances) Kim Boutin (individual distances) Kasandra Bradette Valérie Maltais |

Interesting that they skipped over Olivier Jean for the initial cut for the WC/World Champs team. But perhaps he will be added to the team at a later time.

Interesting that they skipped over Olivier Jean for the initial cut for the WC/World Champs team. But perhaps he will be added to the team at a later time. I think he'll be one of the discretionary selections. The team members they named were the top 4 in overall rankings calculated using Fall World Cups Selections or at the National Qualifier (20%) and Canadian Senior Championships (80%). Olivier didn't compete in the Fall World Cup selections and he didn't have his best weekend at the National Qualifier (he finished 3rd overall). On top of that I'm not sure how much weight was given to points awarded at the Fall Selections as compared to the National Qualifiers since I would assume a win at the Fall Selections is worth more than a win at Qualifiers even though skaters got 10000 points for each.
Basically, Olivier was at a bit of a disadvantage going into the weekend since he didn't compete at Fall Trials (he chose to skip them so he could focus on school) and 4 members of the team were decided based on this ranking system but I would think that his performance at the Championships were enough to put him on the team.

Thanks for the explanation, Sk8erfan.
Frank Hamelin is claiming on his FB page that he came in 5th overall. According to the official results that I saw, he came in 7th at the Senior Champs. It may be that he is including the points from the Fall World Cup Selections and/or the National Qualifier. He is hoping for one of the discretionary spots on the WC/World Champs team.

Yeah, Frank Hamelin came in 5th based on the rankings from both this competition and the Fall Selections. According to the press release Guillaume Bastille finished only 15 points ahead of Frank in those rankings to claim the 4th spot on the team.
My thoughts are that Frank and Olivier are the ones that are going to be named to the 6 member World Cup team but I'm not sure which one would get the last spot on the World Championships team, it's kind of a toss up for me at this point.
On the women's side I think it's between Genève Bèlanger, Audrey Phaneuf and Courtney Shmyr for the last spots on the Women's team depending on how the rankings play out and I can't put one over the others for the last spot on the World Championships team in this case because I don't know how the rankings ended up.
We'll just have to wait and see what they decide.

Genève Bélanger is also on the World Junior Team but she's opted to participate in both World Cups to gain experience as they are her first ever World Cups.

Congrats to Canada for qualifying THREE for individual events! My head says Bastille, but my heart says Jean - Olivier's experience counts for much... and Duffy is not to be discounted. A lovely position to be in for Canada...
