The short track season in Canada kicks off next weekend with the Fall World Cup selections. The competition will be held September 19-21 at the Olympic Oval in Calgary. Each distance will be raced twice and athletes will be ranked based on the cumulative points value of their best 2 distances.
Here is the entry list:
Men 1. Charles Hamelin 2. François Hamelin 3. Guillaume Bastille 4. Patrick Duffy 5. Yoan Gauthier 6. Alexander Fathoullin 7. Sébastien Landry 8. Samuel Girard 9. Jacob McKenzie 10. Samuel Bélanger-Marceau 11. Benoit Larivière-Lord 12. Cédrik Blais 13. Andrew Evans 14. Sébastien Gagnon 15. William Preudhomme 16. Pascal Dion | Women 1. Valerie Maltais 2. Marianne St-Gelais 3. Caroline Truchon 4. Namasthée Harris-Gauthier 5. Keri Morrison 6. Courtney Shmyr 7. Kim Boutin 8. Genève Bélanger 9. Jamie Macdonald 10. Vicky Labourdette 11. Kasandra Bradette 12. Joanie Gervais 13. Audrey Phaneuf 14. Michelle Mackay 15. Léa Thibault 16. Jesse Keca |
Marie-Eve Drolet, Jessica Hewitt, Michael Gilday and Olivier Jean have all declined their place at the trials. Marie-Eve is not skating this season because she's pregnant but I'm not sure why Jessica, Michael and Olivier declined their spots or if they're planning on skating at all this season. Also, I don't see Charle Cournoyer or Vincent Cournoyer on the list and I'm not sure why. The entry list specifically mentioned that Marie-Eve, Jessica, Michael and Olivier declined their spots but their was no mention of Charle or Vincent.

Hmmm- I am surprised about Charle. Maybe he's taking a season off (pretty sure J.R. is doing the same)

This article also says Vincent will be following the speedskating career of his brother Charle - so it looks like Charle will eventually be competing again in the next Olympic cycle...

Toward the end of the article, they mention a fundraiser that some of the guys are participating in for an illness called lactic acidosis - I know that one annoying problem the skaters get when racing is a buildup of lactic acid in their legs that basically shuts them down. I never realized that in some people it can be related to a fatal disease. Here are the results from Canada’s Fall Short Track World Cups Selections. The top two finishers based on skaters best 2 distances automatically qualify for the first four world cups of the season. These athletes are Charles Hamelin, Samuel Girard, Marianne St-Gelais and Valérie Maltais.
The High Performance Committee will choose the remaining 4 athletes. Canada tends to like to give international experience to several skaters at the beginning of an Olympic cycle so it’s likely that some or all of those 4 athletes will change between the first 2 world cups and the next 2 world cups.
Also, the top 4 athletes from the competition will be selected for the Apolo Ohno Invitational (unless they decline their spot in which case it'll go to the next ranked athlete). If no one declines their spot the team will be Charles Hamelin, Samuel Girard, François Hamelin and Patrick Duffy for the men and Marianne St-Gelais, Valerie Maltais, Kim Boutin and Kasandra Bradette for the women.

Hmmm- I am surprised about Charle. Maybe he's taking a season off (pretty sure J.R. is doing the same) Charle Cournoyer had his shoulder operated on over the summer and therefore wasn't physically fit enough to skate at Canadian trials. He is expected to get a medical bye for the fall World Cups.

Canada's team for the first four World Cups have been announced. www.speedskating.ca/news-and-info/news/speed-skating-canada-presents-its-national-team-members-for-the-first-four-isu-short-track-world-cups
For World Cups 1 & 2
Men Guillaume Bastille Samuel Bélanger-Marceau Charle Cournoyer Patrick Duffy Yoan Gauthier Samual Girard Charles Hamelin | Women Kim Boutin Kasandra Bradette Joanie Gervais Valérie Maltais Courtney Shmyr Marianne St-Gelais
|
For World Cups 3 & 4
Men Charle Cournoyer Patrick Duffy Sasha Fathoullin Samual Girard Charles Hamelin François Hamelin
| Women Kim Boutin Kasandra Bradette Joanie Gervais Namasthée Harris-Gauthier Audrey Phaneuf Marianne St-Gelais
|
7 men were on the list for the first two world cups so I'm not sure who will actually be skating in which world cup since only 6 can be entered. One person may be an alternate in case Charle isn't quite ready to compete or maybe one person is swapping out for another between the world cups but those are just guesses.

Lots of new names for the ladies! It's definitely a young team on the women's side. Interestingly, the entire women's team from last years world junior championships (Namasthée Harris-Gauthier, Kim Boutin, Audrey Phaneuf & Joanie Gervais) has made the world cup team. Courtney Shmyr was part of the 2011 and 2012 world junior team and Kasandra Bradette was part of the world cup team in the 2011-2012 season skating in World Cups 3, 4 & 6 but injury has affected her over the last couple of seasons. It's nice to see her back and doing well.
