How cute is this? I've redacted the student's names as this is an elementary school project.
The Columbus Dispatch
N, playing Abe Lincoln, tries to fend off Ben Franklin, played by M, and John F. Kennedy, played by J as they check out his beard during the Wickliffe elementary school's living wax museum project. C is drawn to facts and non-fiction as much as he is greeting his first- and second-grade classmates at Wickliffe Progressive Elementary School in Upper Arlington.
Today, he literally got to push their buttons to elicit all the facts he could handle.
Teacher B, Living Wax Museum was the stage and 20 of her students were the living figures - from Abe Lincoln to Olympic medalist Shaun White.
As an adjoining class was about to visit, B was jumpy.
"Try and stay as still as you can. And remember, no talking unless they push your button," B reminded. "Apolo Ohno, try and get in position."
Another Olympian, snowboarder Shaun White, portrayed by E, didn't need to be told. Atop a snowboard and donning a mask, he was ready to soar.
As he recited facts about White's toddler years, including the two heart surgeries before his first birthday, classmate A, who had pressed the cardboard button activating E, sneezed and walked away.
E wasn't done, however, rattling off facts about White's clothing line and other endorsements.
Q played Meriwether Lewis, donning an oversize velvet jacket and frilly white shirt and explorer's cap.
"Yeah, the jacket's making me really hot. This was my sister's. It's the closest that would fit."
C couldn't get enough and balked when his teacher, B, said it was time to go.
"Wait, I haven't done everyone yet," he said beaming at Apolo Ohno, crouched in his trademark short-track starting pose.
B held an open house at 8 a.m. yesterday for parents, followed by classes. The museum closed by lunchtime.
"Take a nice yoga breath," she told her class. "You did great. It's really tough being a wax figure."

Ok, welcome to the 2010/2011 season! My understanding is that training starts back up today at the Oval.
Here're are my questions: who's going where? Who's 'in' this season? Who's 'out' this season?
From reading tweets, it seems that:
Ryan Bedford, Jessica Smith, Kimberly are back at the Oval. Anthony, Jordan are in Marquette?
Can anyone verify this or add other statuses?
JR sitting out until who knows when?
Who's getting some funding at this point? The Oly team?
Just wondering how this all works...
Aao

From reading tweets, it seems that: Ryan Bedford, Jessica Smith, Kimberly are back at the Oval. Anthony, Jordan are in Marquette? Can anyone verify this or add other statuses? Michelle delved a bit deeper into that than I did when we were starting The Rocker Fund, so maybe she can add some data. The only thing I recall is that it seemed very confusing! The National Team gets some money based on their ranking, and the Olympians get some more. As far as who's training where - I think that most of the 2010 Olympians other than Jordan and JR are staying in SLC. Apolo's taking some time off; Anthony and Jordan are going to Marquette; Jeff Simon's in SoCal. Kyle Uyehara, Morgan Izykowski and Rachel Skrocki are some of the new invitees training with the National team. There's one other who I thought was going to MQT, but I haven't seen anything public about it so I may be wrong. It seems that the skaters are taking advantage of this post-Olympic year to get some college classes behind them, and as you know, we may not see JR next year for that reason. As of right now, there hasn't been a single one of the 2010 Olympians who has officially retired. All of the ladies have said they're coming back, and the only question mark for the men is Apolo. Of the top 16 men at Olympic Trials, Ryan Leveille is the only one who has retired, though Ryan Bedford has said that he will be skating Long Track from now on. There's been a bit more attrition on the ladies' side. Maria Garcia, Sonia Milan and Lezleigh Jaworski have retired - and one or two others haven't skated since the Trials, so they may have hung up their skates as well. The signups (when they start) for AmCup 1 should shed more light on who's in and who's out...

That sounds about right. Jeff Simon is in LA. Aly Dudek is still deciding. Katherine Reutter is staying at the oval. Allison Baver will supposedly be training at the oval too. TRF skaters Morgan Izykowski and Kyle Uyehara have been invited to skate with the National team in addition to Rachel Shrocki. Eddy Alvarez was invited last season, I think he is still there. Jonathan Garcia in SLC, but I don't know if he has been invited to train with the Nat'l team. It sounds like Simon Cho is staying. JR going to school at Berkley. I get the impression he is intending to continue skating. Jessica Smith at the oval. I don't know about Lana. I guess we could ask them! LOL. (especially since there is no one left at USS to ask anymore!) ...Robert Lawrence? Joey Lindsey staying in LT? I dunno....

Hey! don't forget Travis. He's in SLC and an article last week from his home town said he was reporting back for training today So true Justsayin! How could I forget Travis? ...My Bad! (very bad, mtnme, no biscuit...) As for how the skaters get compensated... The skaters do get compensated a bit from USS based on how they place in competitions, but it's not something any of them could live on. They decent payout comes from the USOC for Olympic team members, and based on medals and placement. The thought being if they were good enough to make one Olympic team, the USOC is investing in them to be good enough to make another. But it is based on the skaters continuing to compete and perform every year. If they get injured, they often lose their funding, which is what happened to Alex Izykowski when he hurt his back...which is what sort of started the ball rolling on TRF. At least that's how it worked when I researched it a few years ago...

...and Jordan is having his "Summo Wrestling injury surgery" in the next few weeks...
and yeah to quote a friend of mine--The Oval looks like a ghost-town upstairs. But it does seem they have hired (or maybe she was already there in a different position) Breanna Bissell to interim/replace Peri. I loved Peri. Hated to see her go. She treated ALL of the fans with respect and tried to make them feel a part of the event as best she could.

I heard this weekend that J. R. is coming to Berkelely this fall. Good idea. If he doesn't he loses his place at Cal. He can get down to SoCal easily to train with Wilma. There are lots of flights out of Oakland. The Korean who used to coach with us can't offer him anything like that. And our adult coachs aren't at his level. Still, it would be a thrill if he came out for grins!

USS has updated the Category 1 skaters! Notable new additions are:
ANDREW ASTALOS LEXI BURKHOLDER CHRIS CREVELING JONATHAN GARCIA CLAUDE GILBERT KENDAL PUMPHREY EMILY SCOTT
As far as I know, this is the first time that any of these skaters have made Cat 1 - someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Andrew, Chris, Jonathan, Kendal and Emily will 'graduate' to the Junior Varsity here on BB (their threads will be moved from The Farm Team).
I'll be creating entirely new threads for Lexi and Claude - I was so impressed with their skating at Nationals in March, and I'm excited to 'introduce' them to y'all here at BB so that we can start following their careers!
Congratulations to all of our Category 1 skaters! For the complete list, see USSpeedskating.org > Athletes > Category 1 Athletes (note that this list also includes Long Track)

From back in 2003. Interesting. -------------------------- www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12860536Am J Sports Med. 2003 Jul-Aug;31(4):507-10. Injuries in short track speed skating.Quinn A, Lun V, McCall J, Overend T. Sport Medicine Centre, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. BACKGROUND: Little is known about the pattern of injury in short track speed skating. PURPOSE: To investigate the incidence and characteristics of injuries in short track speed skating. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: Ninety-five of 150 elite-level skaters (63.3%) were surveyed to collect information on training and competition load as well as on injuries sustained during the 1999-2000 competitive season. Injuries were characterized in terms of anatomic location, type of injury, time loss from training and competition, and circumstance of injury (acute onset during competition, on-ice practice, off-ice training, or insidious onset). RESULTS: Sixty-one of the 95 skaters (64.2%) reported sustaining at least one injury. The knee, ankle, spine, leg, and groin were the most commonly reported sites of injury. Skaters were also asked to list previous on-ice injuries. The two most common injuries occurring on-ice before the 1999-2000 season were lacerations from the knee down (11.1%) and ankle fractures (10.2%). CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that there is a high incidence of injury in competitive short track speed skating. PMID: 12860536 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] ----------------------------------------------- CONCLUSION: The results of this study suggest that there is a high incidence of injury in competitive short track speed skating.D'Ya think? I wonder how much money it took to come to that conclusion...
