Captured in a light-hearted moment, Katherine Reutter is up on the podium for winning the U.S. ST Championship 2009 for the second year in a row. She is flanked by her teammates, Kimberly Derrick, who came in second, and Jessica Smith in third.

Spanning the generations, the Rootin' for Reutters support Katherine at her competitions. Here are photos of her maternal grandmother Fern, her nephew and members of her family at the U.S. Championship in St. Louis in December 2008.

Korea's Eun-Ju Jung leads the pack during the women's 1500m final at the 2009 ISU World Cup Short Track Speed Skating Championships in Sofia on February 7, 2009. Korea's Eun-Ju Jungwon the gold medal followed by US Katheine Reutter, silver and China's Yang Zhou, bronze. Unbelievably blurry photo of Katherine on the Podium for her silver medal. (hey, we're desperate here....)

Reutter Adds to Medal Collection at World Cup #5 Sofia, Bulgaria, Feb. 9, 2009 With one year to go to the start of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games American Katherine Reutter continued to define herself as 'one to watch' by earning a pair of medals at the fifth stop of the Samsung ISU World Cup Short Track series. In early December, Reutter claimed a silver medal at the tour stop in Nagano, Japan, then went on to secure the US National Championship title later that month to close out the first half of the speedskating season. Last weekend, a silver medal in the 1500 meter event, followed by a bronze in the team relay put Reutter back on the podium in Bulgaria and marked her 6th and 7th career World Cup medals. "I'm excited to be back on the podium," said Reutter. "It was a tough weekend, with lots of crashes and some really aggressive racing. I actually felt like I had a good shot at a few more medals, especially the relay gold. That was in our hands right up until two to go when we made a small mistake and let it get away. It's always great to be on the podium, especially with your teammates, but I can't help but think about what I could have done better in the races that got away. I'm looking forward to getting back on the ice in Germany next weekend." The 2008-09 Samsung ISU World Cup Short Track season will conclude next weekend in Dresden, Germany on February 13-15, 2009 for the sixth and final round. One year until the Olympic games. And I'm in Dresden, Germany for the final World Cup of the season with beautiful and intelligent Jessica and Laurie typing out a blog before racing gets underway tomorrow morning. Is there a better place to be?
The top three men and top two women went home on Monday to prepare and 5 of us travelled over. Everyone is over jet lag now and training has been going well. The rink here is brand spanking new, and the ice is in really good shape. Ridiculous amounts of grip, but its better to have more grip than less. Minus the fact that the hotel room are extremely small, Alex Boisvert can almost touch both walls at the same time, everything is really good here. Remi, myself and Katherine Reutter from the US rented some bikes the other day and did a little tour of Dresden, checking out some of the famous old buildings that were destroyed during the fire bombing in world war II but have since been rebuilt. I would post up some photos, but I forgot the cord to connect my camera to the computer

Put some Champaign on Ice By Philip Hersh Chicago Tribune
Another Olympic medal-winning speedskater from Champaign? Could be, the way Katherine Reutter, 20, has come on this season in short track, the discipline that gave Champaign product Bonnie Blair her start on ice but was not added to the Olympic program until Blair had established herself as the greatest long track skater (5 Olympic golds) in U.S. history.
Last weekend in Germany, Reutter highlighted the best World Cup performance ever by U.S. women by winning silver medals at 1,000 and 1,500 meters and a gold in the relay. While the world-leading Chinese skaters skipped the meet, Reutter showed she is in their league by skating the third fastest time ever in the 1,000, less than two-tenths off the world record set last year by Wang Meng of China.

Champaign on Ice Love that tagline.
Here's a recap on Katherine's World Cup Series
Katherine Reutter Fans - The 2008-09 Samsung ISU World Cup Short Track season concluded this weekend in Dresden, Germany. Team USA is heading home today with 7 medals - Katherine laying claim to THREE medals: 1500m - SILVER 1000m - SILVER Ladies 3000m Relay - GOLD Katherine went for the world record in the 1000m in her first run of the 1000 on Friday; the world record being 1:29.495 (Meng Wang, China) and Katherine running it in 1:29.667- missing it by .172 of a second; she barely missed the world record, but she set a new American record (her own) by .757 of a second. Talk about being FAST! Katherine then went on to take the Silver in the ladies 1000m, and what a race - 4 on the ice - 2 Americans (Katherine and Kimberly Derrick) and 2 Koreans. Katherine was battling it out for gold on the last 1/2 lap...the two Koreans behind her; the Korean in 3rd went down, the Korean in 2nd went for a pass on Katherine - impeding Katherine in the process and then falling right in front of her as they approached the finish line - both going down...Kimberly Derrick skating past all 3 for Gold; Katherine and the Koreans scrambling to get back up - the Korean taking Katherine down got across next, then Katherine - but then the Korean got disqualified for impeding Katherine and the silver went to Katherine. Katherine ends the 2008-2009 World Cup season ranked 6th overall in the 1000m. Katherine also took Silver in the ladies 1500m, This was Katherine's back to back second place finish in the 1500m, getting Silver the week before last at World Cup 5 in Sofia, Bulgaria.distance. Her podium picture is attached. Katherine ends the 2008-2009 World Cup season ranked 5th overall in the 1500m. The weekend concluded with the relay event, the ladies TEAM USA taking the win for Gold. The ladies end the 2008-2009 World Cup season ranked 4th overall. With the 2008-09 Samsung ISU World Cup Short Track season now concluded, the world's best short track speed skaters will return to action for the 2009 ISU World Championships in Austria, on March 6-9; and then end the season with World Team Championships in Heerenveen, Netherlands March 14-15. And while you are marking your calendar - it's time to be thinking ahead and getting your calendars marked for next fall: 2010 Olympic Team Trial: September 8-13 in Marquette, MI World Cup 1: November 13-15 in Marquette, MI

from the Colorado Spring, Co newspaper today:
Reutter wants to follow in Blair's speedskating footsteps Comments 0 | Recommend 0 March 1, 2009 - 5:32 PM BRIAN GOMEZ A wide-eyed, open-minded teenager, Katherine Reutter needed only a few minutes with Bonnie Blair to realize she would become a speedskater.
"This is what I want to do," Reutter said she thought after talking to the five-time Olympic gold medalist her senior year in high school. "Even though I'm young, I want to move away from home. I want to train. I want to do all I can."
Lots of ambition has translated into plenty of promising results for Reutter, the two-time defending short track national champion, who hopes to follow in Blair's footsteps at the 2010 Vancouver Games.
Reutter, 20, of Champaign, Ill., won four silver medals this season in World Cup events. Her 1,000-meter time of 1 minute, 29.667 seconds last month in Dresden, Germany, was less than 0.2 of a second off the world record set last year by China's Wang Meng.
That makes Reutter a favorite at the world short track championships Friday through Sunday in Vienna, Austria, and a valuable asset to the resurgent Americans at the world team event March 14-15 in Heerenveen, Netherlands.
Eight months ago, Reutter began seeing sports psychologist Nicole Detling Miller "mostly (for) confidence. Training is tough, and not every day is good. You can be confident with how hard you worked - that's what has helped me."
"When you get to this level, everyone is strong, and everyone is mentally tough, and everyone knows how to race," she said. "It comes down to who wants it, who believes they can do it."
I believe she can do it! Go Katherine!

From USS - World Championships March 6, 2009--Vienna, Austria.
Team USA hit the ice ready to go at the 2009 ISU World Short Track Championships in Vienna, Austria. The day started off strong with four of the six U.S. skaters that competed in the 1500m making the finals. J.R. Celski, Apolo Anton Ohno and Jeff Simon fought it out with five other skaters in the men's 1500m final while Katherine Reutter battled against six Korean and Chinese skaters in the ladies' 1500m event.
Celski (Federal Way, WA) skated a great 1500m, leading for most of the race with Ohno (Seattle, WA) right behind him. With only one-half lap to go, Celski was passed by Ho-Suk Lee and Yoon-Gy Kwak of Korea and finished in third place. Apolo took fourth and Simon (Las Vegas, NV) was taken out when Korean skater Si-Bak Sung fell. "I looked back to see where Apolo was and didn't realize Ho-Sok and Yoon-Gy were passing me," Celski said. "I felt really good today and I'm very surprised on the results." In the ladies' 1500m final, Reutter (Champaign, IL) jumped to second place and was making a move to pass into first when she lost her balance and fell, taking a Chinese skater with her. With two skaters disqualified in the final, Reutter still ended up in fourth place. Kimberly Derrick (Memphis, TN) and Jessica Smith (Melvindale, MI) both made it to the 1500m semi-finals but lost speed and didn't make it through to the finals.
The ladies' relay team, consisting of Reutter, Derrick, Smith, Alyson Dudek (Hales Corners, WI) and Lana Gehring (Glenview, IL) skated a strong semi-final, finishing with the second fastest time of the day. They will meet up with teams from China, Korea and Canada in Sunday's 3000m relay final.
Racing continues on Saturday, March 7 with the men's and ladies' 500m events and the men's 5000m relay semi-final.
