Based on one the photos ShortTrackHD posted on twitter, it looks like Olivier cut his dreads. I thought he looked good with them, but he looks amazing without them Wonder when he did it.

Hi, bp - 'haven't seen you here in awhile! I've always liked his dreads, and I'm not normally a fan of the buzz-cut look - but it really looks good on him, doesn't it? I wonder if it had anything to do with his switch to long track. Aerodynamics aside, I suppose those dreads under a long-track hood could potentially make him look like Mr. Box (i.e, Jack). Here's a few screen grabs of Olivier I cut from the ISU broadcast: Silver medalist Liang Wenhao (CHN, left) and bronze medalist Gong Qiuwen (CHN, right) laugh as Olivier Jean 'flashes' the crowd during the men's 500M flower ceremony at WC3, Nagoya, Japan - Dec 4, 2011. L to R: Liang Wenhao (CHN - silver); Olivier Jean (CAN - gold); Gong Qiuwen (CHN - bronze). The sweet smell of victory!

I still thought it at last night. Why did he so happy? It is really interesting! His mien looked like he would like to propose which smelled at the bunch of flowers.

World Cup 4 - Shanghai, China (Dec 9-11, 2011) Canada's Olivier Jean leads other skaters during the men's 500-meter Final A of Short Track Speed Skating World Cup at Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai, China, on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011. Jean won the race. "Today was a difficult one for me," said Jean. "I won in the face of adversity. In the semifinals, I had some bad luck on a pass that advanced me to the final. An advancement automatically puts you in fifth spot on the start line (of the next race). A fifth spot is never an advantage, especially in the 500 metres where the start is critical. I was patient. "I did a double-pass of two Chinese skaters, which enraged the hometown crowd, to take the lead at the bell (final lap)." On the second day of the ISU World Cup in Shanghai, China, Canadian skaters stepped on the podium twice today. Olivier Jean won his third gold medal of the season in the 500 metres, while Charles Hamelin took silver in the 1,500 metres.

I just keep coming back to this thread... I've always liked this guy and his playful nature - the photo with the 'Flash' T-shirt says he hasn't lost that, but something just seems different about Olivier Jean. I can't put my finger on it, but I don't think it's entirely about the new 'look'...

While the headlines are about Valerie Maltais, there are some quotes from Olivier in the second half of this article: Maltais wins three medals, Canada takes seven overall at short-track speed skating The Canadian Press / March 11, 2012 “I’m happy with my 3,000-metre race,” said Jean. “A Korean skater, Da Woon Sin, was in a position to pass me in the overall standings, so we battled for the sprint points during the race. I was successful in winning those important points.”Read the entire article: www.thespec.com/sports/article/685359--maltais-wins-three-medals-canada-takes-seven-overall-at-short-track-speed-skatingTags: Olivier Jean / Valerie Maltais / Li Jianrou / Cho Ha-Ri / Charles Hamelin / Marie-Eve Drolet / Guillaume Bastille / Francois-Louis Tremblay / Sin Da Woon / Kwak Yoon-Gy / Liam MacFarlane / Arianna Fontana / Short Track Speedskating

Tony Chung says that at Canadian World Cup Trials, Olivier skated a 1:21:815 1000M - that's nearly 1-1/2 seconds faster than the world record of 1:23:454! But sadly, it was not an ISU-sanctioned event, so it can't go into the books. Tags: Olivier Jean / Short Track Speedskating

With the first 2 World Cups taking place in Canada next month, the ice might be a little chillier for the USA team: This is a Canadian article about the skate-tampering incident that we've been talking about on our National Team Boycott thread. Olivier's reaction was predictably good-natured: Jean told Radio-Canada that he found the allegations "funny" and indicated he was largely unbothered by the result of the race in question. "You can't change the past," he said. "I can't waste energy on something that happened two years ago." However, he also said this: Jean confirmed to Radio-Canada that he recognized a problem with his skates at the start line and suspected foul play. "We had our [suspicions] that [the skates] were tampered with, but we had no proof," he said. I want to move to Canada! Except it's too darn cold and dark in the winter. Oliver Jean just reaffirms all the things we've ever heard about the "niceness" of Canadians. That was my experience in Calgary and Victoria. I've been reading a lot about Native Americans, called First Nations up there, and their treatment contrasts markedly with that of our Native Americans. At least they are consistent over the centuries....
