Good show, Canada! Canada wins (men's) relay gold at short-track championships DEBRECEN, HUNGARY — The Canadian Press / Sunday, Mar. 10 2013 “I went to pass (the Korean skater) and he came across at me pretty hard,” said Gilday. “I thought I was by and he sort of almost body-checked me. I lost my balance, I was on my left skate for a long and went pretty low on it (but held on).
“We defended our world championship, and I think is the most important. All the guys did a good job. We had a dismal World Cup season and we didn’t execute very well throughout the whole year. But when it mattered at the world championships, we executed in the semifinal yesterday and executed in the final today. I think we earned our title.”Read it all: www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/more-sports/canada-wins-relay-gold-at-short-track-championships/article9582459/

Here's some interesting info in response to a question on our World Cup 3 thread about Charles Hamelin shaving his beard - I'm copying it here, 'cause it'll get 'buried' when the skating starts tonight! The guys on the Canadian team are growing moustaches for Movember therefore Charles shaved the beard off at the beginning of the month. By the end of November they'll all have cheesy moustaches. If anyone wants to donate (it's for prostate cancer and men's mental health) you can find their page on the Movember Canada website under Canadian Olympic Team or you can search for each guy under their own name. It's a great cause. Here's the direct link to the team's page if you'd like to donate: ca.movember.com/team/1127645

This is awesome. The Humber Valley Speed Skating Club in Newfoundland made a float for their Christmas Parade celebrating the short track Olympic team and wishing them luck in Sochi! It's always great to see kids getting excited about the sport especially in the maritime provinces where you don't see a lot of representation in senior or junior national competitions.

I seem to remember Ivanie Blondin's name from back in her ST days! Ottawa-raised speed skaters qualify for 1st Olympics togetherIvanie Blondin, Vincent De Haître like "brother and sister" CBC News Posted: Jan 26, 2014 3:34 PM ET Last Updated: Jan 27, 2014 10:40 AM ET “I feel as though being one of the younger skaters and it being my first Olympics, I really want to absorb everything and take it in as more of an experience,” Blondin said.
Ottawa's Vincent De Haître is the youngest Canadian speed skater to qualify for the Olympics at age 19.
The pair have trained together throughout their lives, with Blondin saying she feels like his older sister at times.
“I couldn’t be more proud of him,” Blondin said.
“It’s a great feeling to be able to share the experience, not only with teammates but someone I grew up with.”Read it all: www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-raised-speed-skaters-qualify-for-1st-olympics-together-1.2511792

I've heard at times that there's a bit of a rivalry between East and West - but 26 of 30 Canadian ST medals gives some pretty impressive 'bragging rights'! Québécois passion drives short-track racersby Sean Fitz-Gerald / Jan 31, 2014 - 8:39 PM EST MONTREAL — In 1992, when short-track speedskating made its debut as a medal sport at the Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, Canadian journalist Michael Farber called it the “absolutely best event” of the Games, describing what he watched as the “frozen form of Roller Derby and the Indianapolis 500 rolled into one magical, compact evening.”
And the Canadians had done well in the chaos, with nine of them winning at least one of the new medals. And all but one of them shared a specific, geographic characteristic that has come to define the sport in Canada ever since: They were from Quebec.Read it all: www.canada.com/olympics/news/quebecois-passion-drives-short-track-racers

Anouk Leblanc-Boucher (now Anouk English) has decided to make a comeback for the 2018 Olympics in South Korea. Anouk competed for Canada at the 2006 Olympics and she won a bronze medal in the 500m and a silver medal as part of the 3000m relay team. In order to finance her training she is selling her skates for $7000 on kijiji and she is also willing to sell her silver medal from the relay for $1 million (no less) , the ad is here: www.kijiji.ca/v-art-collectibles/saint-john/olympic-skates-use-by-double-medalist/566081687?enableSearchNavigationFlag=trueOlympic speedskater Anouk Leblanc-Boucher wants $1M for medalAnouk Leblanc-Boucher looks for way to finance comeback for 2018 Olympics in South Korea
A Canadian speedskating double-medallist in the 2006 Turin Olympics has put her skates up for sale on Kijiji, and she wants $1 million for one of her medals to help finance a comeback at the 2018 Olympics in South Korea.
Anouk Leblanc-Boucher — now Anouk English — won a bronze medal in the 500-metre short track event and a silver medal in the 3,000-metre relay in Turin.
In an ad on Kijiji, English is offering to sell the skates for $7,000 — and for $1 million, she'll sell one of the medals.
"I actually want to do a comeback and actually come back for South Korea," said English, who is from Quebec but now lives in Saint John.
"I'm going to need some funding, and I don't want to worry about money, I just want to train," she said.
"So to me, it's more of my open door to maybe get a gold," said English, who has had three children since winning those medals. "And if the skates are the way I can get better skates, then that's the way I'm going to get them."
Her ad says to contact her if there is interest in the the skates — "and possibly the medals."
English says she will sell her silver medal from the relay event for $1 million.
"Just one person asked if it was serious because of that emotional connection they thought that would be," said English. "And I just gave them the same answer — this is just an extra way to get ahead."
She says she won't sell her bronze medal because there's only one like it, so it's not for sale at any price.

Do I remember that Anouk retired between Torino & Vancouver because of pregnancy? I wish her well - it'll be interesting to see if she has any takers on the medal!
