Keri Morrison (8th after 2 distances) was the overall winner of American Cup 2 in Cleveland in October.
I was very impressed with Charle Cournoyer in the World Cups!
Do you know when they'll finalize the team selections?

Does anybody know of any social media sites, blogs, youtubes, etc., where you can follow the Canadian team at? Other than the skaters who may have individual Twitter accounts that you can Follow, or FB pages that you can Like, I don't know of anything offhand. We have a LOT of Canadian visitors to the site, but very few of them are registered members - I've opened this Canadian board up (temporarily) for guest posting to see if someone can help you.

I'm going to try to be more diligent about posting info on up-and-coming athletes from other countries, and here's a start - Canadian Zachery McLaren: Lightning skaters, coach earn provincial kudos By Dan Olson, Coquitlam Now / June 1, 2012 There is the speed, the skill and just the feeling of being out on the ice that attracts most people to skating. Going fast was a main attraction for Zachery McLaren when he was a child entering kindergarten. Stopping, unfortunately, always got in his way - until he was directed to speed skating. Eleven years later, few can catch him, never mind stop him. McLaren was named the Provincial Male Short Track skater of the year for 2011-12 by the B.C. Speed Skating Association, after a season that saw him finish atop the B.C. rankings and advance to the nationals. His passion for skating had an early beginning. "As a child I was involved with those community learnto-skate programs, and my parents were getting frustrated because I would refuse to stop and just run into the boards," McLaren recalls. "I was having a really hard time advancing- My sister's friend was involved with speed skating and her parents kind of told my parents." That was the beginning of a great relationship - between a boy and his blades. McLaren was one of three members of the Tri-Citiesbased Lightning Speed Skating Club who were recognized at the BCSSA annual general meeting last week. McLaren won gold in 1,500 and 3000 metre at the B.C. Winter Games and last October took the Octoberfest en route to his No. 1 ranking. Lightning coach Lucy Lee was chosen Coach of the Year, while McLaren's teammate Clifton Stewart was one of two bursary recipients. Lee received the award after joining on with the Lightning coaching staff six years ago. The former high calibre South Korean skater came to the club via her daughter, who skates with the Lightning. "I was surprised. I didn't know until [fellow Lightning coach Louise McLaren] showed me," said Lee. With a background that includes inline skating - a popular summer version of speed skating in Korea - Lee has helped transform the club from mainly a recreation group to a competitive club. In the beginning, the onetime Korean national team coach had no plan to resume her on-ice career. She had no idea that coaches here were not paid. "It's different [here] for a coach - a volunteer?" But volunteered, she did. "When Lucy came in she told the skaters that they can reach the top-. Some of them were like 'I don't know?' Now she's shown them they can go beyond their [original] goals," said Louise McLaren, who is also Zachery's mother. "She's really funny," noted Stewart. "She really does keep us on track. [The coaches] really push us hard to be our best." Skating alongside Zachery McLaren has also been a benefit, said Stewart. "We have a lot of fun together, making jokes," he said. "We know each other well and he helps keep me motivated."[/img] Read More: www.canada.com/sports/winter/Lightning+skaters+coach+earn+provincial+kudos/6712245/story.htmlTags: Zachery McLaren / Clifton Stewart / Lucy Lee / Louise McLaren / Barb Beck / Short Track Speedskating +++

Hi. Just thought I would point out that Speed Skating Canada has really improved their website. It now has quite a bit of info on the Canadian team and also has links to many news articles about the various members of Team Canada. The Quebec federation also has an online speed skating magazine that's really good (it's in French though). Go to www.fpvq.org and click on Webzine for current and past issues.

I've been remiss in not reporting some very impressive Canadian achievements in the first 2 World Cups! 1) Valerie Maltais WORLD RECORD in the 1000M (WC1, Calgary) - though her record was later broken again by Korea's Shim Suk Hee. 2) Men's Relay WORLD RECORD (WC1 Heats, Calgary) - Michael Gilday; Francois Hamelin; Charles Hamelin; Olivier Jean 3) Ladies' 500M(2) SWEEP (WC2, Montreal) - Gold: Jessica Gregg; Silver: Marianne St-Gelais; Bronze: Caroline Truchon 4) Men's 500M(2) SWEEP (WC2, Montreal) - Gold: Guillaume Bastille; Silver: Michael Gilday; Bronze: Liam McFarlane 5) Out of 12 medals awarded in the 500M in Montreal (it was raced twice), Canada won 9 of those medals... the other 3 were won by China.
