Derrick's set for her medal shotMid-South skater, U.S. team face best in 3,000M relay final By Nick Zaccardi, Special to The Commercial Appeal / February 24, 2010 VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Short-track speedskater Kimberly Derrick is young enough to return in 2014 or 2018, but her best shot at winning an Olympic medal may come tonight. Derrick, an Arkansas native who learned to skate on a West Memphis roller rink, is part of the U.S. women's 3,000-meter relay squad that will compete in a four-team final with three Olympic medals on the line. No U.S. woman has won a short-track medal since 1994. Derrick, a two-time Olympian at 24 years old, has never advanced through qualifying races to an Olympic medal final until now. "Just to say that we've made it that far is an accomplishment all in itself, but we all came here with a goal of winning a medal," Derrick said. "That's what we've focused on since we had (Olympic) trials (in September) and we finished the World Cups." Well, it's time to get all these photos I hoarded (lest they disappear from the web forever) off of my 'puter and onto the appropriate archives. Just consider it my gift to you!

Canada with the Silver, China with the Gold, and USA for the Bronze Alyson Dudek, Allison Baver and Katherine Reutter skate the arena with the flag after the Bronze Medal decision (Lana Gehring out of frame) Kimberly Derrick did not skate the final, but she did skate the previous heats that got them to the finals, so she shares in this victory lap in spirit. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been trying to post individual results from American Cup 1 on the individual skaters’ threads, with pics (when available). Kimberly competed in AmCup1, but she was really ill – so bad in fact, that she withdrew from the competition after the first distance, the 1500M. She made the B Final in that event, but was too sick to start. I felt so bad for her.
With her short stay in the event, there aren't any pics of her, but on a positive note, she’s going to be competing in AmCup 2 - Nov 6-7 in Cleveland, where I’m sure she’ll be her usual ‘awesome skating self’! Good luck, Kimberly!

Here are Kimberly's results from American Cup 2 – November 6-7, 2010 – Cleveland: 3rd Overall 1500M – 1st (A Final) 500M – 4th (A Final) 1000M – 3rd (A Final) 1500M Super Final – Did Not Start I’m only guessing here, but Kimberly’s DNS in the 1500M Super Final may be due to the fact that the meet ran overtime because of a power outage, and some skaters had planes to catch! Here’s a video that features Coach Jae Su Chun and Kimberly – in this video, Kimberly explains her mindset in this post-Olympic year. Rather than taking a year off as many skaters do, she is pursuing her education and just enjoying skating - while at the same time, seeing who the biggest competition will be as 2014 gets closer.
