If you're going to the Olympics (and even if you're not), you might want to add a 'TEAM BERLY' T shirt to your collection of skater shirts. (my personal criteria for buying skater shirts is that they have to be graphically interesting- and Kimberly's is a real winner in that department!) Here's the front and back of the shirts: Ordering Info: Shirts are $20 and they range in sizes Youth Medium to Adult XXX-Large. Mail checks or money to: Holly Derrick 5067 DeLaney Valley Lane, Arlington, TN 38002 Contact: hdsk8mom@aol.com for more information.

Nice article on Kimberly Derrick...thought I'd post it! Tennessean speeds onto 2010 Olympic short track team: Derrick a strong medal contenderJanuary 24, 10:14 AM Nashville Fountain of Youth Examiner Joseph Hall World ranked short track skater Kimberly Derrick has qualified for the USA speed skating team for her second Olympics. She claims Memphis as her hometown and is a current resident of Utah. She has the distinction of being the first Winter Olympian born in Arkansas. Derrick has been a sports competitor for most of her life. As a child, she was attracted to in-line skating and quickly distinguished herself as an upper level talent, winning several events between ages 6 and 18. At the age of 20 she qualified for the US Olympic Team and skated in the Torino Italy Winter Olympic games. Hours before competing, her grandfather died while attending the 2006 Olympic games. Courageous Competitor
Derrick was determined to continue her quest and decided to compete in honor of her grandfather, believing her would want her to compete. She has described her grandfather as a “pillar of strength.” It was a poignant moment in her life, and was unable to complete her qualification round. While Derrick did not win any medals, she gained substantial experience in Olympic competition. Golden girl of short track
Since then, she has continued to display international prowess on ice by winning several competitions including an individual and team relay gold medals at the World Cup games in in 2009, as well as an overall bronze medal. The USA team relay gold was the first women's team skating gold in history. Derrick completed the 2009 competition year as the top ranked American woman and is 5th in the world individually. Derrick's focus has included obtaining higher education, she attended Northern Michigan University, Marquette, where she majored in elementary education. Her ambition is to become a teacher once her current passion for skating is completed. As a reflection of her continued development and determination, Kimberly again qualified for the US Short Track team and has the momentum and experience to represent the US in several individual and team events.

This story includes an adorable pic of a much-younger Kimberly and her dad! Dedicated to speedBy Graham Sweeney / The Collier Independent / Feb 4, 2010 Everyone knows that to be an Olympic athlete one must exhibit immeasurable dedication, focus and talent.
However, few realize that being the parent of an Olympic athlete requires a fair share of work as well.
Collierville’s Kenny Derrick is more than aware this...Read more at: suburbancommunitynews.com/articles/2010/02/04/the_independent/news/doc4b6b2162b9ab3310136886.txt

Utah resident, short-track speed skater Kimberly Derrick set on possible medal haul at Olympics by Brian Shaw / February 10, 2010 / Utah Sports Examiner
Michelle originally reported this at the Ice & Times blog - including it now in Kimberly's archive:
Although West Jordan, Utah resident Kimberly Derrick will compete in three events at the 2010 Winter Olympics, she prefers to be in front, no matter what race she‘s in. A multiple-medal threat in Vancouver, Derrick said there’s one position from which she likes to look at her competition.
“I like to be in the lead and control the race as long as possible. I like to know what’s going on behind me instead of sitting in the back and waiting for someone else to make their move before I make mine,” Derrick said.
Her achievements speak to this unwavering confidence, as Derrick is currently the No. 1 ranked short-track speed skater in America. She is also ranked fifth in the world, and she is a definite medal contender in both the 1000 and 1500 meter races, as well as the 3000 meter team relay at the 2010 Olympics.
Derrick has been skating well up to the start of the Olympics, and after racing well implemented summer-style training to her regimen, as her team hasn’t raced since November 2009. Part of the training for Vancouver is sport-specific, like weightlifting and mountain biking, as well as skating, but Derrick said it also includes small, technical things that need to be fixed on the ice.
After finishing 8th overall at Worlds, Derrick, a converted inline skater, hopes to better that performance in Vancouver. Now that she has one Olympics under her belt, and has moved to Utah to train full-time under the guise of the U.S. National Team staff, she feels she has a leg up on the competition.
“Our whole women’s team is really strong, I think this is the best team we’ve ever put together,” said Derrick. “I’m pretty confident going into the Olympics. I’ve had more experience going into this Olympic Games than the last Olympics I was in, and so knowing more about the sport has been a definite confidence booster.”
With all of the knowledge Derrick believes she has acquired since moving to Utah in 2007 and getting serious about short-track speed skating, chances are good that she’ll come back to her home ice of the Utah Olympic Oval carrying more than one medal.
She summed up her ideal racing situation thusly. “I think for myself it’s just to be mentally strong in any race that I’m in, and to know that I’m as good or better than any girl I’m racing against and that it’s in my mindset,” Derrick said.
