A member asked me a question that I couldn't answer - I'm hoping someone out there will know:
In the relay, the World Championships rules for entries state that only the Top 8 teams at the end of the World Cup season can enter teams for the relay. Our ladies are ranked 8th - however, the rules also state that if the host country (in this case, Hungary) is not in the Top 8, they will take the place of the 8th-ranked team. It would appear that Hungary (ranked 9th) would take that 8th spot, and our USA ladies would not be skating in the relay. However, I know that Jessica Smith is traveling to Hungary - and I think she would only be there for the relay(?) Is there perhaps a higher-ranked country that isn't attending?

Here's the standing, but for now, I cannot find an answer to the question!

Hi all, I think I have the answer. The US team isn't competing in the relay, they didn't qualify and the reason that Jessica Smith is travelling is because she is skating individual distances. If you look at the entry list it say that Emily Scott is a substitute. I guess US Speedskating decided to replace Emily with Jessica. Here's the link to the entry list: www.shorttrackonline.info/live.php?comp=749&list=competitors

I just got an explanation from a friend who's familiar with the selection criteria for skating the individual distances. This is what I was told: The US Champ gets an automatic slot (Lana) - the remaining skaters are selected from the skaters who finished 2nd (Emily), 3rd (Aly) & 4th (Jessica), based on their best individual finish in any World Cup race. Jessica & Aly each had a 5th-place finish, but Emily's best was a 7th - so Jessica & Aly got the remaining individual slots.
For the men, J.R. gets the first slot. I see that both Jeff & Chris had a 6th-place finish - would Chris get the 2nd spot based on a higher overall finish at US Championships? (The men only get 2 individual skaters)

In that link to the entry list (above), it lists KWAK Yoon-Gy (Korea), but he's not able to compete due to surgery. So this list is not up-to-date??

I also see that many of the countries enter more skaters than can possibly compete - for instance, the Hungarian men have 7 entered, with none of them designated as subs. The rules for entries (see my link below) say that they submit a preliminary list about 6 weeks ahead of time, and the link we're seeing may be based on that preliminary list. Here are the ISU rules, and some of this may be explained in Rule 295, Section 4: ISU Speedskating Rules

Why bother even having a U.S. Championships if only the top spot wins their place, and the rest are left to someone elses discretion? That is...unless the World Cup rankings are ironclad and there's no opportunity for monkey business to manipulate the results to allow for a USS 'favorite' skater to edge out another who just happens to be not in USS or the coaches good graces at the moment. And it would appear that changes on a fairly frequent basis. For the men, J.R. gets the first slot. I see that both Jeff & Chris had a 6th-place finish - would Chris get the 2nd spot based on a higher overall finish at US Championships? (The men only get 2 individual skaters) Wouldn't appear so at first blush, as that certainly didn't work for Emily...

I heard today from the same friend who said that the tie-breaker is the second-best finish in a World Cup race; i.e., a 6th and a 7th trumps a 6th and an 8th. I don't know how that stacks up for Chris & Jeff - I haven't had time to look again. And I haven't actually looked up the rule, but it may be on the USS website.

You made me look! ISU Rule 295 begins on page 103.
On the USS Website under Short Track Rules & Regs look at page 39. Entry Quotas: The 2013 World Short Track Championship Team will be comprised of five (5) Ladies and five (5) Men if the U.S. Team is qualified for the relay event. USS's ISU entry quotas for the 2013 World ST Champs shall be three (3) ladies and two (2) men.
The overall U S Champion for Ladies and for Men will qualify to skate the individual events at the World Short Track Championships.
From there, it gets really complicated relevant to World Cup overall placements, and if there is a tie, blah blah blah

The question is answered for the guys - Chris mentioned on Facebook that he has the second individual spot this weekend. So it's Chris & J.R. for the men, Lana, Aly & Jessica for the ladies. Go get 'em, USA!

Good Morning Everyone! In spite of all the turmoil within US short track speedskating, here is a ray of sunshine for y'all! On Twitter, I told Aly Dudek that we'd be in the stands watching and cheering, with (small) American flags and she replied: "definitely will look for you! So happy you are coming all this way to cheer on #TeamUSA" (Leaving this afternoon for Orange County for dinner with a friend, then flying out of LAX tomorrow- 2:50PM!)
