This thread will be used for discussion and trip-planning for World Championships - Debrecen, Hungary (March 8-10, 2013).
Discuss any topics related to this event - trip-planning, pre-competition, post-competition, and 'Game Day' chat!
Before making travel arrangements, double-check with USS and ISU official schedules.
For those who are planning to attend the event, pertinent information gathered here - as it becomes available - will be summarized IN THIS 'INTRODUCTORY' POST for quick-reference.
Please share any info that will be of help those who will be attending the event and/or following along online!-------------------------------- We'll be hosting a fan chat all weekend during World Championship racing ON THIS THREAD. Please join us!
The following ISU link will have live data feed (when racing is taking place, you'll see a clickable LIVE link in the menu):
www.sportresult.com/federations/ISU/ShortTrack/?evt=11212100000019
The above link will also be your source for the official schedule, heat lineups and results - the schedule/heat lineups should be posted sometime Wednesday or Thursday.
I don't see that ISU will be broadcasting this weekend (looks like they're covering Long Track instead), so we'll prolly be stuck with just the data feed (i.e., the 'blinking numbers'). Keep watching this thread, though, 'cause sometimes our international members from China, Great Britain, etc., find a link that works for us! Anyhow, here's the link that any video broadcast should be on if it becomes available:
livemanager.eurovision.edgesuite.net/isu/site/index.html
You can find a preliminary schedule and other helpful information on the official event website:

I have never been 100% clear on what's what with World Champs. First, I thought last year was the last year. But since we have one scheduled, I decided to enlighten myself! Found this explanation on the Canadian speed skating website, since the USS website had no info.
About the World Short Track Championships
The world senior short track championships are a senior international short track speed skating competition held once a year to determine the world champion in individual distances, relays and overall classification. The competition lasts three days.
Men and women perform individual races in the 500 metres, 1,000 metres, 1,500 metres and 3,000 metres, and a four-person relay, in the 3,000 metres for women and 5,000 metres for men. Points are given for placing in the finals in the individual distances, and only the top eight skaters who accumulate points in previous finals are eligible for the 3,000-metre final.
The athlete with the highest points after the points for all individual distances are added up is declared the men's or women’s overall world short track champion.

Question: During the WC season, doesn't each individual skater and country need to 'rack up' a certain number of points to even participate at World Champs?
Thank you Wiki:
The World Short Track Speed Skating Team Championships are a professional team short track speed skating event and held once a year in a different country. Top 8 countries from Short Track World Cup Series qualify automatically. 4 skaters from each country race in the 500 meter, and 1000 meters, 2 skaters from each country race in the 3000 meters and a team effort in the 3000 meters relay, for women, and the 5000 meters relay for men. 8 countries are divided into 2 brackets, and do races. Country for first placed skater get 5 points, and 3 points, 2 points, 1 points respectively, sum of each skater for races determine the rank. First placed country qualify for Final A, last placed country qualify for Final B. Repachage is held for remain two qualify countries for Final A. (The Championships was discontinued until further notice by ISU after 2011 season.)
Since this was published the new 5 point rule has been added, once again, info from WIKI:
Skaters perform individual races in the 500 meters, 1000 meters, 1500 meters, 3000 meters (super-final involving eight competitors with highest points after completion of other distances) and a four-person race, in the 3000 meters relay for women, and the 5000 meters relay for men. Points are given for each placings in the finals of individual distances (currently 34 points for 1st, 21 for 2nd, 13 for 3rd, 8 for 4th, 5 for 5th, 3 for 6th, 2 for 7th, 1 for 8th). From 2009, the leader after first 1000m in the 3000m super-final is given extra 5 points. The athlete with the highest points after the points for all individual distances are added up (maximum 141 points, 136 points before 2009) is declared the Men's or Ladies' Overall World Short-track Speed Skating Champion. In case of a tie in points, precedence is given to the athlete with higher placing in the 3000m super-final.

Top 8 Countries attend. On the ISU website the USA team standings are: Men #6, the Ladies are #7.
NOW--I'm sneaking all of this in at work--so if any of this is wrong, feel free to correct it!

Are you talking about the World Team Championships or the World Championships? The World Teams were about 8 teams competing. Aren't the Worlds different? Weren't the World Team's terminated due to lack of interest?
LT and ST speedskating - not enough regular competition to feed the average sports fan's appetite for sustained interest, and, when there is competition, the format is so dang confusing and complicated that all, even the most die hard fans, give up and you are left with family and close friends as the only ones who care enough to watch in person or even check results on some website.

Yes, as osaycanusoc said, it seems like gasp is (in part) talking about team championships, where only the top 8 countries attended. The final-ever team championship was the 'infamous' skate-tampering competition! World Championship rules are found on the ISU site under the following link: ISU Short Track RulesLook on page 78 near the bottom for the rules about entries from each country. If I'm reading it right, USA gets 3 ladies and 2 men for each distance. And only the top 8-ranked relay countries get to compete in the relay.

I admitted it up front--I'm confused too! The 2 designations have always thrown be for a loop. So feel free to enlighten me. I'll check the ISU site. Thanks osay & Lori!

I haven't seen anything official yet, but I'm hearing that John-Henry Krueger may be taking the 5th spot on the World Championships team. Congrats to JH!
JH finished 11th at US Championships - I don't ever recall seeing them make a discretionary pick from that far down in the overall rankings. However, he'll only be skating in the relay, and he's a fierce relay skater, so I'm guessing that's the thought process here...

It is worth mentioning that the World Championships all-around champions will directly qualify for the Korean 2014 Olympic Winter Games players list, so the competitions should be fierce. Not only is the competition among countries, the Korea players are also likely to compete with each other. After all, the trials may be unexpected, so this all-around champion is an opportunity.
Before I posted the wrong forum board, this is correct.

I'm staying at Hotel Lycium (with my niece)... anyone else going??!! I'm so excited for you! When do you leave, Lily? Hi Lori! We leave next Wed 2pm from LAX.. to Frankfurt, change planes and on to Budapest. Then I have Eurail Pass for us to take the train to Debrecen (approx 2-1/2 hr ride). It'll be March 7th, approx.7pm when we check in at the hotel. We'll be at the Fonix Arena Friday morning... and Sunday until the last event, then the night train back to Budapest. Two days in Budapest and then to Vienna for 3 days, followed by 2 days in Salzburg. We'll take the train to Munich for a quick lunch near Marienplatz (new City Hall area)... and then take the train to airport for our flight back to LAX Sunday night, the 17th! We're cramming a lot in for that week after World Championships! I hope I can get decent wifi connection somewhere so that I can post some photos... right, "Gasp"?!!
