This thread is totally devoted to Julian Wood, and is intended to be an archive of his skating career - as well as a place to chat about his accomplishments and encourage him as he pursues his goals both on and off the ice.
If you have any articles, photos, links and news about Julian (past or present), we'd love to see them!

Julian Wood is Skater of the Month for April, and will be our last SOTM due to lack of fan interest and participation. Please give whatever you can and send him out with a bang. Julian suffered a horrendous injury during a skating practice while he was living with Lori which had her sitting vigil at the hospital during a very scary operation and scenario. He cut through 4 muscles, nearly severed his hamstring completely and was a mere heartbeat from slicing his femoral artery. That's a heck of an injury to come back from, and yet, not only did he come back, but he won a silver medal at Junior Championships which earned him a spot on the Junior World Championships Team that competed in Taipei. He also won gold in his age-class at last March's Nationals. He's still got a ways to go in recovery, but he certainly is doing MUCH better than anyone ever expected. We'll be seeing great things from Julian in the future. To read more about Julian and/or get donation information, go to his SOTM page on TRF: therockerfund.org/FORMgallery5.htmHis permanent link after his time is done as SOTM will be here: therockerfund.org/FORMgallery4.htm (click on his photo to get his bio) The TRF website will stay up as an archive, and all are welcome to continue to support the skaters who have not retired. Also look to the National Skaters tab, which has links to the individual skater's websites, where you can often find donation info, blog posts and/or addresses to order skater merchandise - like T-shirts. The Ice & Times blog, Rocker U and the Boots and Blades forum will continue on as the place for posted ST and skater news and info. Thank you so much to all the fans who have participated in donations to the skaters over the past two years. They appreciate it more than you know. Your generosity has made it possible for them to continue training when they weren't sure where they were going to get the money to do it. You helped them pay for ice time, coaching fees, much needed equipment and travel costs. I need to make a special thank you to Lindsey who generously allowed us to start TRF on GA before we got things going on the 'Rocker Family of Products' ( that phrase always cracks me up...) . In doing so, she helped to not only have fans of Apolo, but many people became fans of short track and the other skaters as well. The majority of donations came from members who started as members of GA, and that is something to be proud of. I also need to thank Lori who worked equally hard on this project when we were trying to get TRF off the ground and running smoothly, despite many setbacks and difficulties. Thank you Lori So Thank you again to all of you.

Three cheers to both of you for ramping up the face of ST speedskating. TRF was started at at a difficult economic time and I guess we can say it has suffered due to the same. I have enjoyed meeting many of the skaters through TRF. TRF has raised the awareness of how expensive this sport (like all Olympic sports) can be. It's obvious these kids are not in it for the fame, glory or financial rewards. They compete as Olympians because the love it!

I have a special place in my heart for Julian.
Many of you who've gone to competitions know this, but as Mtnme mentioned above, Julian was one of 2 skaters who lived with our family through the 2008-2009 season. I've never mentioned it online, but it seems appropriate to do it now, as Julian is The Rocker Fund's current Skater of the Month.
While he lived with us, Julian had a devastating 'cut' injury at practice in Nov 2008, requiring emergency surgery - prior to that time, he had the fastest 500M start in the nation. I'm so proud of his recovery - making the Jr. World Championship team this season, 1 year after his accident.
Please support Julian - through The Rocker Fund, and by following his career. He will make you proud!

Lori informs me it was his hamstring, not Achilles tendon that Julian nearly severed (which I originally had posted and have since corrected) ...proving embarrasingly right out here in public view that my knowledge of 'Grey's Anatomy' is apparently limited to the TV show...

Is the Rocker Fund set up to receive donations through Pay Pal?

Is the Rocker Fund set up to receive donations through Pay Pal? No, you send donations directly to the skater's via their parents or their skating clubs. With the Nat'l team skaters with websites, any donation info they have is there. (Although THEY would be smart to have a paypal button) We don't touch any money except in rare occasions. We set it up that way on purpose so that there would be no appearance of impropriety by us - ie- like Lori and I were somehow making money off of this...which we don't. We just post information. We considered doing a paypal button directly to the skaters at one time on TRF, but since I have a hard time getting bio info and photos out of 'em, just IMAGINE how difficult it would be to get them to set up a paypal! Since donations aren't really coming in anymore except from Lori and me, it kinda seems like a moot point at this juncture...

That makes sense! It is too bad, because I would imagine that if they had PayPal access more people would be willing to donate!

As our newest Rocker Fund skater, Julian is also the Featured Skater at Rocker-U! As you get to know Julian better, hopefully you'll be moved to help him achieve his short-track goals through The Rocker Fund. rocker-u.net/featured_skater.htm
