Here's a nice Q&A with Eddie Alvarez from NBC Olympics. Ahead of the pack: Eddy AlvarezAmerican short track speed skater Eddy Alvarez is relatively new to the sport, but he's taken to the ice quickly. Alvarez, a former baseball player, was a successful in line skater before his days of short track. He missed the Vancouver Olympics after failing to qualify. He had major knee surgery prior to the Olympics and recovered too late to get the proper training time in to prepare for trials. Alvarez has continued improving since and won his first individual World Cup medal in the 500m in Shanghai. Alvarez is also a part of the U.S. men's relay team that finished first in the overall World Cup standings this year for the first time in history. www.nbcolympics.com/news/ahead-pack-eddy-alvarez

I had no idea that Eddy's sister was Nicole Alvarez from our local rock station, KROQ! VIDEO & ARTICLE KROQ’s Nicole Alvarez On Seeing Olympian Brother Despite Terror Threats: ‘Nothing Could Stop Me’January 21, 2014 11:17 PM LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Security concerns surrounding the upcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi continue to escalate, but the sister of one Southland Olympian is not letting that get in the way of her trip — or her pride.
KROQ personality Nicole Alvarez says that, despite heightened concerns over terror threats, nothing will prohibit her from seeing her brother, speed skater Eddy Alvarez, represent the United States in the Olympic games.
“Nothing could stop me,” Alvarez said. “I’m putting myself voluntarily in this situation, but how many times is my brother going to go to the Olympics?”Read it all: losangeles.cbslocal.com/2014/01/21/kroqs-nicole-alvarez-on-seeing-olympian-brother-despite-terror-threats-nothing-could-stop-me/

Eddy 'disappeared' after AmCup Final in 2010 for a couple of years. This is a marvelous story about his past and the physical struggles he endured to get back into competition - GO EDDY!!! Eddy the Jet’s Olympic odyssey from SoBe to the Sochi Winter OlympicsBy LINDA ROBERTSON / Miami Herald / January 25, 2014 Alvarez nearly gave up on his Olympic dream in 2012. Years of pain from his damaged knee tendons had become unbearable. He had tried to cope by receiving injections of platelet-rich plasma.
“The doctor would jam the needle into the bottom of my kneecap and scrape around inside to promote blood flow, and it was so agonizing that I would pass out on the table,” Alvarez said. “I was tired of living in constant pain.”
Alvarez came home and decided on a “last resort” — five hours of bilateral knee surgery by Dr. Keith Hechtman, who repaired 12 tears to the patellar tendons.
He was immobilized for six weeks at home.
“He lived on that couch, used a bedpan, watched TV and got depressed,” said Alvarez’s mother, Mabel, pointing to the place in the family room where she nursed him back to health. “When he finally got up, that, to me, was a gold medal in itself.”Read more here: www.miamiherald.com/2014/01/25/3891616/eddy-alvarezs-wild-ride-from.html#storylink=cpy

Great article! I love these "Olympic stories." They are what make the competition come alive. But the article is also a clear example of the fact that journalists...ahem..."make up" stuff for their articles. Stay upright in the turns with the use of pivot gloves?!!! The writer obviously never took high school physics. Thank goodness Eddie is the Genuine Article!
The Sweet Adelines are doing singing Valegrams on February 14 and my neighbor promised to tape the evenings' Olympics for me. So I'll be out in cowboy country in Prineville, OR singing "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" while thinking of our athletes in Sochi~ ~
