Interesting article by Phil Hersh (Chicago Tribune) - what do you think of his 'optimist' view regarding Apolo? It's a scenario I never thought of, but wouldn't he still have to make the team on points? (And IMO, it's much too late for that...) High or low: Two views of U.S. medal hopes for 2014 Winter GamesTime for predictions with pre-Olympic winter sports season at its endApril 06, 2013 | Globetrotting by Philip Hersh *Short Track Speed Skating (6 medals)Optimist (1 gold, 4 medals): J.R. Celski looks as he did early in the 2012-13 season, wins 500 and gets medal in 1,500. Apolo Ohno returns to help win relay medal. Lana Gehring recaptures her 2011-12 form and gets a medal in 1,500. Pessimist (0): Burdened by lingering effects of the controversies that shredded the team last season, leaving it with no medals at the 2013 worlds. The beauty of the Olympics is that the serendipitous unexpected can happen.
Although the unexpected happening conjecture of Apolo showing up for the relay, or any race for that matter, would be closer to the argument from fantasy. Or does Hirch know something we don't know?...LOL.

I think Mr. Hersh was bored, and on deadline and had a wee bit of Olympic fun! It will be interesting to come back to this article after Sochi, and compare. Either way, Apolo in Sochi---maybe a coaches pick---but that means the bylaws would need to be changed, approved, posted. We all know USS could not pull that off in time for Sochi. Too many organizational skills needed!

With the plethora of articles Phil has written on the ST controversy, I think we sometimes forget that he DOES cover other sports! If I'm not mistaken, he does the bulk of articles on Olympic sports for the ChiTrib. I think his analysis is pretty spot-on with Lana & J.R. (though I think we have some 'dark horses' who could surprise everybody) - and he did add the Apolo reference in his 'Optimist' viewpoint.
Actually, the Olympic Team selection format hasn't been made public yet to my knowledge. I don't remember where I heard it, but I think I remember hearing that the format for the USSDC was a 'test' for the Olympic Trials(?) I don't know if there are any by-laws that dictate how the team selection has to be made - and unless there are, I suppose they could set it up any way they want.

...and of course that was just a bit of snarky humor above. Phil's Twitter feed proves how busy he is.

Remember the cool promo photos that we saw of J.R. Celski, Kimberly Derrick and Apolo Ohno before the Vancouver Olympics? Well, here are some samples of the 2014 version (taken by Harry How, Getty Images) - participants this time were Eddy Alvarez, J.R. Celski, Chris Creveling, Jessica Smith and Lana Gehring. I heard that Jeff Simon was also there, but I haven't seen any pics of him yet. I've seen more of these pics on some of the skaters' FB pages - has anyone seen where Getty has published the whole set (like they did last time)? skateleft.com/2013/05/03/1034/

I watched the Kentucky Derby today, and saw some of the promo commercials! One of them was mostly shots from the Vancouver Olympics, but there was one (from the recent photo shoot) that showed Jeff, J.R., Eddy & Chris on the starting line. Jeff was an on-the-ice 'action' skater, but was not part of the individual photo shoot.

The medals for Sochi! There's always a lot of symbolism in the medal design - according to the Sochi 2014 Winter Games Facebook Page (where I found the picture), here is the concept: (The medals) feature the Sochi 2014 "Patchwork Quilt" – a mosaic of national designs from the various cultures and ethnicities of the Russian Federation. The medals have been carefully crafted to depict the landscape of Sochi from the sun's rays reflecting through the snowy mountain tops onto the sandy beaches of the Black Sea coast. The unusual combination of metal and polycarbonate lends to the medals a sense of lightness and distinctive beauty.
The front of the medal features the Olympic rings. The reverse contains the name of the competition in English, and the logo of the Sochi 2014 Games. The official name of the Games in Russian, English and French is engraved on the medal’s rim.For more (you'll need to copy & paste): www.facebook.com/home.php#!/sochi2014

Report: $30 billion for Sochi Olympics missingWith eight months to go until the 2014 Winter Olympics, this is usually the time when Games chiefs start cranking up their public relations campaign and begin to get us all excited about the five-ringed circus all over again. But the suits at the International Olympic Committee have some fires to douse right now, at the end of a week that brought nothing but bad news for a series of host and candidate host cities. Boris Nemtsov presents a report claiming widespread corruption behind the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi. (AP)The IOC was forced to answer fresh allegations of widespread corruption surrounding Sochi, the site for next year's winter extravaganza, after a Russian parliamentarian demanded a full political investigation into missing funds. Utah an important stop on road to Sochi Olympics Bevy of big events set for Beehive State in run-up to Sochi Olympics By Michael C. Lewis | Special to The Tribune / First Published Jun 01 2013 05:07 pm • Last Updated Jun 02 2013 12:13 am
The Winter Olympics might not be returning to Utah — at least, not yet — but the sports that constitute them are returning in a huge way next season.
Nearly a dozen top-level events, including four World Cups and four U.S. Olympic Trials, will grace the state’s slopes, chutes and ice sheets next winter, in the buildup to the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia. Not since the 2002 Salt Lake Games has the state enjoyed such a spectacular winter-sports lineup, which will provide fans the chance to see many of the elite athletes who will be competing for Olympic gold just a few weeks later.
