From the ISU Congress that concluded today in Barcelona:
As of the season 2011/2012 the ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Team Championships will no longer be held.
So - it looks like the WTC in Poland will be a 'go', but it'll be the last one...

Please join us here at Boots & Blades this weekend as we follow Team USA at the World Team Championships in Warsaw, Poland! This is the last competition of the season, so let's have some fun together before the Summer ST Drought'! ---------------------------------- We'll be following ISU's 'blinking numbers' at the following link (watch for the LIVE button in the menu bar): www.sportresult.com/federations/ISU/ShortTrack/?evt=11210300000010LADIES Bracket #1China Korea Japan Russia Bracket #2 Canada USAItaly Poland MEN Bracket #1 Korea Russia Canada Turkey Bracket #2 USAPoland China Japan -------------------------------------- Warsaw is 5 hours ahead of Eastern time, 8 hours ahead of Pacific. Based on ISU's posted schedule, racing will start at the following times tomorrow (Saturday) morning: Bracket #1: 10:30am local = 5:30am Eastern; 2:30am Pacific Bracket #2 (USA's bracket): 1:30pm local = 8:30am Eastern; 5:30am Pacific ----------------------------- Here's an English-language website for the event (thanks to Sunshine for the find): pzls.pl/warsaw2011/world-championships-2011/home.html--------------------------------------- World Team Championships is a really fun competition to 'watch', and it has a very different format from every other event. Here's what happens (it sounds complicated, but as the races take place, you'll 'get it'): WORLD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS In each division (men's and ladies) there are 8 national teams, placed into 2 brackets with 4 teams each. The teams are ranked or seeded somehow - teams 1-3-5-7 are in one bracket, and teams 2-4-6-8 are in the other. In the Qualifying Round: Each bracket competes in 4 events - 1000M, 500M, 3000M and a relay. (3000M ladies; 5000M men) In the 1000 & 500, each country selects 4 of their 5 team members to compete, and each event is run in 4 heats, with 1 member of each team in each heat. However, the 3000M is a single race with 8 skaters, 2 from each team. Points are awarded in the 500 and 1000 as follows: 1st = 5; 2nd = 3; 3rd = 2; 4th = 1. The same points scale is used for 1st-4th in the 3000M, but no points are awarded for 5th-8th. Then the 4 teams run the relay, and the point scale is: 1st = 10; 2nd = 6; 3rd = 4; 4th = 2. In each bracket, the top finishing team is advanced to the A Finals and the bottom team is relegated to the B Finals. Then the middle 2 teams in Bracket 1 compete in a Repechage round with the middle 2 teams in Bracket 2. In the Repechage Round and the Final Round, the slate is wiped clean, points from previous rounds are disregarded, and all teams start with 0 points. In the Repechage Round, the 4 teams go through exactly the same round of events, in exactly the same way. The top 2 teams are advanced to the A Finals, the bottom 2 teams to the B Finals. In the Final Round (both A & B), the teams skate as above. The points gained in this round determine the final rankings and medalists. 1st-4th place come from the A Group, and 5th-8th place come from the B Group. Obviously, it's best to finish 1st in the Qualifying Round, 'cause you get a 'bye' into the A Finals.

Well... I just fell out of a tree and landed on my feet! The brackets and start times I posted above were for the LADIES - I hadn't even looked at the MEN'S brackets, but (thankfully) the men are also in Bracket #2, so the start times will be the same for them! I amended the post above to include the guys! I'm gonna try to get a good night's sleep, so good luck to those teams in Bracket #1 (all are welcome to comment during Bracket #1 races)... but I probably won't be joining you here 'till Team USA skates in Bracket #2's races - 5:30am Pacific; 8:30am Eastern!

Looks like the Bracket is up and we're about to start - up first is Jessica Smith in Heat #1 - she's in Lane 4 for the blinking numbers!

Jessica gets 2nd - 3 points for Team USA Canada leads now with 5 points Lana is up next in Heat #2 - she's in Lane 1 It appears that the skaters for each heat are determined just before the start, which is probably why we're not seeing names on the blinking numbers
