Here's a pic from Jerry Search (Olympic Trials): My memory of the day-to-day details is very fuzzy, but Robert had a very bad crash and was unable to finish one of his races. He tried to skate again at some point (the next day?) and tripped at the start, but recovered and gave the crowd a show that had the whole arena cheering! He caught up and led the race again, with a huge smile on his face, but the effort was just too much and he faded from the lead. Good show, Robert! Heal well, and give 'em what-for!~ See more of Jerry's pics at www.nationalspeedskatingmuseum.org/Photo%20Albums/JerrysAlbums.htm

Robert "hitched" a ride to The Berry with us on Saturday. Very nice young man from Gaffney, South Carolina. The town that has a "peach" for a water tower. Per our other Carolinian in the car that afternoon, from one side the "peach" tower looks just like a butt, crack and all!
His "Yes mam" made us feel right at home. His mom would be proud of his manners and respecting his elders! Poor kid. He may wish he had waited on someone else to offer him a ride. But we did keep him in stitches.

There's such an 'incestuous' relationship between Long Track and Short Track! Methinks we need to just call this forum 'Speedskating' and leave it at that! ;D Good news for Robert from USS: He will be traveling to Moscow, Russia to participate in the World Junior Speedskating Championships ( LONG TRACK) on March 12-14. GOOD LUCK, Robert!

Future Olympic hopeful ponders life beyond the rinkBy Jim Lajoie / Diocese of Marquette / 3/5/2010 www.dioceseofmarquette.org/upcarticle.asp?upcID=2249When Robert Lawrence circles the ice at breathtaking speeds during short track speedskating, his mind is on the finish line. Yet, it may have nothing to do with skating. Lawrence, the 2010 U.S. Junior Short Track Speedskating Champion, feels that a higher calling, one to the priesthood, may conceivably be in his future. “I’m waiting to make a decision until I’m done with skating, but it is something I’m looking at,” said Lawrence, 19, a native of North Carolina who now makes his home in Gaffney, S.C. “The history of the Catholic church has always been such a big part. Religion has always been important to me.” Interestingly, Catholicism is relatively new to the upstart skater, who by many accounts is putting himself in position for a run at earning an Olympic bid in the next Winter Games. “I’ve only been Catholic for about a year and a half. I was actually raised Southern Baptist,” he explains. “When I was 7 or 8 years old, an older woman came to live with my family for three years. She was Catholic, and at the time, I didn’t even know what that meant. After a year with us, she told me that she could see this (priesthood) as a possible future for me. I stored that away in my memory.” So, a couple of years ago, Robert sought to become a Catholic by attending and successfully completing RCI sessions with his mother. “For me,” he said, “it answered so many questions, mainly what happened between Biblical and present times. There was no single life-changing event …” That drive to seek answers in his spiritual life is clearly indicative of how he approaches speed skating. “Ever since I can remember, I’ve had a competitive spirit,” he said. “There are reasons why I feel this is where I’m supposed to be.” Lawrence began his skating career at 6 with the in-line discipline, but was shortly introduced to the ice for the first time in South Carolina. He then met what proved to be his first coach at a training session in Minnesota. From there, his speedskating career began to blossom. “It’s been a life experience and a great journey,” he said. “The biggest thing for me is as long as I’m out there and having fun, whether I win or not, it reminds me what I’m really here for.” A brush with defeat gave Lawrence, who finished 11th overall in the Junior Worlds, the knowledge and fortitude to grow as a person, both athletically and spiritually. “I remember competing against another Christian athlete and the race didn’t go the way I wanted it to go,” he recalls. “I took a stroll outside in 10 degree temperatures … I just needed time to myself. “The skater who beat me came out and found me, gave me his coat and walked back in with me. That was a real eye opener. From that, I learned that no matter what happens, we can come away as great friends and people.”
