To those who keep asking. I am one of many along with 2 other posters here who lost their accomodations in Vancouver when the Canadian group went belly up on their contract with Norwegian Cruise Lines and their ship the Norwegian Star. Since Feb 1, 2010 at about 8 a.m. my time, I have done nothing but try to find accomodations. We scored! Thanks to EVERYONE in the ST community who was working on our behalf--you know who you are and I will be happy to maintain your privacy. However, expect some great big HUGS when I see you in Vancouver. If I could get it through customs I'd bring some good old Texas Long Necks, chips, and hot salsa to add to our Olympic party. I'll let the other 2 posters "out" themselves if they choose.

Well, it seems that one of our own has made headlines, too! - so happy that it worked out, Carol, and I hope you get a refund-quickly - maybe you can smuggle some of those Texas long-necks with the skaters who are taking their swords blades on board their flights! Ohno Fan's Olympic Dream Almost Sails Off By LITA BECK / Thu, Feb 4, 2010 A speedskating fan nearly missed a trip of lifetime when the travel company that sold her a room aboard "floating hotel" grounded its plans.
Apolo Ohno fan Carol Oldham planned to stay aboard a luxury cruise ship that would be docked in Vancouver for the upcoming Olympics.
"It is that once-in-a-lifetime, bucket-list opportunity," she said.
But Newwest Special Projects, based in Edmonton,Alberta, pulled the plug on its plan for the floating hotel less than two weeks before the start of the Winter Games. Here's the story: www.nbcdfw.com/news/sports/Ohno-Fans-Olympic-Dream-Almost-Sails-Off-83608847.htmlAnd a video too... www.cbc.ca/video/#/News/ID=1404185110A personal note: I was sorely tempted to do this myself, but my armchair, fireplace and HDTV said 'no' (okay, and so did my husband). I can believe condo/house/hotel scams that one finds online and such, but a freakin' Norwegian Cruise Line SHIP bailing on commitments? The article says they booked 1000 of 1119 rooms - what the h*** are they gonna do with that ship in the meantime? Is Dry Dock more profitable than 1000 paid rooms? I really don't understand... but I DO understand that my next cruise (and yes, there's one coming up) won't be with NCL.

Lori--the product was NCL. It's the businessmen who put the New West Special Projets group together that dropped the ball on many levels. The did not "vet" the employees on the ship to work in Vancouver; they did not have a place to properly dock the ship AND most importantly of all, I have a sneaking suspicion the Vancouver Port Authority had no idea about this so I'm guess they dropped the ball on some MAJOR security issues. So don't blame NCL. I would imagine the lawsuits are going to be long and arduous. However, it is their ship and their product tied into this, so I feel sorry for them on a certain level. However, when I placed calls to NCL in Miami their stall tactics were almost as good as New West Special Projects. So.....

Vonn leads the Vancouver gold rushAlan Baldwin VANCOUVER (Reuters) – Italian ski showman Alberto Tomba turned the 1992 Albertville Olympics into Alberto-ville, and now Lindsey Vonn is putting out a welcome mat for Vonn-couver. The host city that grew up at a time of 19th century gold rushes is braced for another stampede, this time of eager athletes brandishing skis and skates — and the occasional broom — rather than picks and shovels.... ... Vonn joins the “Flying Tomato,” the moniker given to red-haired Olympic halfpipe champion snowboarder Shaun White, and speed skaters Shani Davis and Apolo Anton Ohno as the headline names in an invading U.S. team intent on over-running their northern cousins. COUNTER-CULTURE The free-spirited Ohno, a native of nearby Seattle, is already a familiar face with his bandana and goatee beard, but the short track skater plans on being remembered more as the United States’ most decorated Winter Olympian. He already has five medals from two previous Games and, entered in four events, has every chance of skating past Bonnie Blair’s American record of six. Davis, who in 2006 became the first black man to win an individual Winter Games gold, is favorite to defend his 1,000 meters title and also holds the world record at 1,500 metres. Some awesome photos of some of the long and short track athletes during practice in Vancouver. Check out Francois Hamelin's photo. For a second there, I was thinking 'Hey, you're going the wrong way!' Skate Fast, Turn LEFT!!! (NOT turn right and smack into the wall) ...but then I read the caption... (Hey Lori, I think there are a few of these suitable for your collection of 'short track skins skins of the world'... www.torontosun.com/sports/vancouver2010/photos/2010/02/08/12795816.html

Just a couple of reminders (from upthread):
1) For those out there that want to send a card or letter to a speed skater at the Games, you can mail it to the following address:
Remember it will take 75 cents to send it to Canada. This might be a fun project for school kids or clubs. Service starts 1/29/10.
[Skater’s Name] United States Olympic Committee Olympic Village Vancouver 2010 Athletes Way Vancouver, BC V5Y 0A8 Canada
2) The first day of ST competition is this Saturday, Feb 13!

Another tongue in cheek (and often inaccurate) article on the games. By the sheer amount of wisecracks we've seen in the media about skeleton recently, it's a pretty safe bet that while we all think the winter Olympic sports all have an accelerated element of speed - and therefor danger to them , it's skeleton that hands down gets EVERYONE'S vote for being just plain insane! "Skeleton: I think this sport is so named because after the wind has peeled all the flesh off a slider’s bones as he careens 80 miles-an-hour headfirst down a windy, icy track, that’s all that’s left...."Here's the link to the rest: www.mycitizensnews.com/2010/02/clise-olympic-education/

NBC Natl News did a short segment featuring the town where the Luger lived. His dad was also an Olympic Luger. The language of losing a life transcends all Nationalities.
