MICHAEL HUBBS
There's more about Michael on Page 1 of this thread, but I saw this YouTube video, and it's very well done. It's short, and I especially love the end!

BENJAMIN OHBurtonsville Teen Wins Big at National Speedskating Contest Benjamin Oh, a 15-year-old speedskater, recently won silver and bronze medals at a national competition. By Whitney Teal / Colesville Patch / May 21, 2012 Benjamin Oh (#261) leads the pack. Photo Credit: Jerry Search Benjamin Oh wants to take his passion for speedskating to the world’s most prestigious sports stage—the Olympics. The 15-year-old Burtonsville resident won three silver medals and one bronze from this year’s U.S. Short Track Speedskating National Competition in Green Bay, WI, this March. Oh, a sophomore at St. Anselm’s Abbey School in Washington, D.C., has been competitively skating for two years. “I was interested in the speedskating during the 2002 Olympics when I saw [speedskating medalist] Apolo Ohno,” said Oh. “After the Vancouver Olympics in 2010 I figured I should just try skating because I already knew how to skate and it seemed interesting.” This year was Oh’s second time at nationals and he picked up silver medals for his age group, the 777-meter and 500-meter races. His team placed third in the 3000-meter relay. “It’s more than it looks like,” Oh said of speedskating. “Knowing when to pass people, knowing your opponents is very important when you race, knowing your pace and knowing yourself.” Oh, a three-sport athlete, spends up to 12 hours a week training with the Potomac Speedskating Club during speedskating season. He also plays ice hockey and runs track. Even with speedskating season behind him, the teen is still looking ahead to the next race, the American Cup races.[/img] Read More: colesville.patch.com/articles/burtonsville-teen-wins-big-at-national-speedskating-contest#cTags: Benjamin Oh / Short Track Speedskating +++

Just heard thru USS that rising star Nathan Hewitt broke his leg in practice today and will be having surgery tomorrow. Nathan and his family are 'locals' who are close to my heart and our prayers will be with him for a speedy and full recovery.

I'm SO late on this update about Nathan - Ann says the surgeon was absolutely perfect for the job, and he thinks that Nathan might be back on the ice in about 3 months! She also says that Nathan dealt with the surgery well, and was insisting on doing things for himself almost immediately.

GABRIELLA HACHEMThis young lady was very impressive, winning the Junior C Division at Age Group Nationals decisively - and she hasn't been on the ice for very long! She skates with the Potomac Speedskating Club, and is a 14-year old 8th grader with a bright future in short track. I posted this article in General ST Chat a couple of days ago, but it has a blurb on up-and-comer Gabriella Hachem that is worth noting: NASCAR on ice: Local speedskating putting down rootsSeveral high-ranked competitors train in Washington areaby Jacob Bogage / Staff Writer / Gazette.net / June 25, 2013 Gabriella Hachem, 14, of Rockville, figure-skated for four years until picking up speedskating in 2011 with Potomac.
“I got on the ice for the first time and it felt weird because the skates were different,” she said. “But I got the hang of it right away and learned the technique.”
By March 2013, she went to her first national competition and was named the 13-to-14 year-old age group national champion.Read it all: www.gazette.net/article/20130625/NEWS/130629695/1040/nascar-on-ice-local-speedskating-putting-down-roots&template=gazette

We have several articles and a good bit of info about Kazia Cooper here on this thread, but she also has a GoFundMe account, and keeps it updated frequently with her progress. It's a good glimpse into the life of a young, up-and-coming skater! She's training away from home, so here's the link if you're inclined to help her out: www.gofundme.com/vyms4

LEXI BEKELE
Lexi is a talented young skater coming up through the SoCal Speedskating organization. It's been fun to watch her get better and better every year! She has lovely parents, and she's being coached by the amazing Wilma Boomstra - and Chris McLaughlin, a skater-turned-coach that we followed here at BB until his retirement from competition a couple of years ago.
