It's nice to at least hear that these ridiculous sums of money being spent to host the games is recognized as unsustainable, and the IOC is at least interested in addressing that issue. The Reno Tahoe coalition had several blog posts from Sochi, where they were apparently doing some 'recon' missions on what it takes to host a Winter Olympic Games. From the Reno Tahoe Winter Games coalition On the ground in Sochi- Looking at the infrastructure "It is reported that Russia spent an estimated $50 billion to deliver the Sochi 2014 Games – more than any other host. The International Olympic Committee understands that this type of investment is not sustainable or available in most countries, and there has been an effort by IOC members to refocus attention on the legacy of hosting the Games. Legacies can be vast, such as: improved sport and regional infrastructure, increased opportunities for young people to play sport, regional tourism, enhanced cultural awareness, local business opportunities and investment, job creation, environmental improvements, technology infrastructure and innovation, and much more."Read the rest of the article here: www.renotahoewintergames.org/archives/2129For some of the other blog posts from Sochi, go here and look under the heading 'recent blog posts': www.renotahoewintergames.org/

A very interesting selection, @dose - I never thought of Beijing as a winter-type city. Obviously they can host many of the indoor sports (such as figure skating & speedskating) - but where would the venues be for outdoor sports such as skiing?

Beijing is a city with four distinct seasons. Beijing and northern Chinese city Zhangjiakou launch a joint bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. Beijing is expected to stage the ice events while Zhangjiakou holds snow sports. Zhangjiakou, a city in Hebei Province located 200km northwest to Beijing, An inter-city express railway is to be built between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, the distance between the two cities will not be a problem when the Games comes.
