When we were in Vancouver, WHO was the ladies' skater who hit a milestone? There was one Canadian female skater who was joyous beyond belief at her finish in one race - a first medal, if I recall - was it Jessica Hewitt? Michael Gilday has posted info on the Canadian Team selection process, as well as thoughts on his performance thus far... mgilday.blogspot.com/He also posted a link for video of some of the races: www.youtube.com/user/captsteveheart

Speedskater MacFarlane jumps into Olympic pictureBy Terry Bell, Vancouver Province August 12, 2009 11:01 PM VANCOUVER — Liam McFarlane is an avid reader. When he isn’t flying around a short track speedskating oval, the 23-year-old from Medicine Hat, Alta., manages to whip through a couple of books a week. Lately he’s been reading a lot of motivational biographies, including Michael J. Fox’s Always Looking Up and Lucky Man. Wednesday afternoon, the reader turned writer and was busy scripting his own story. McFarlane, still a Canadian development team skater who has never even raced a World Cup event, upset the field to win the men’s 500 metres at 2010 Olympic trials at the Pacific Coliseum. “I’m extremely excited,” said McFarlane, who finished in 41.821 seconds. “I looked back with about half a lap to go and nobody was behind me and inside I’m like ’I’ve won it, I’ve won it.’” Marc-Andre Monette of Montreal was second in 42.943 seconds with Oliver Jean of Lachenaie, Que., third in 47.337. Francois Hamelin of Ste. Julie, Que., was fourth in 53.677. McFarlane, a fast starter, grabbed the lead and then benefitted when Jean and Hamelin collided at the end of the first lap. Hamelin fell. Jean stumbled, but didn’t regain his stride until it was too late. That was a lucky break for McFarlane, who came here thinking he could win. “I felt extremely confident,” he said. “We came in here in June and I had a really good camp. I think I turned some heads then and I think they saw me as a threat coming out here. I saw myself as a threat.” Trials are far from over. Racing continued Wednesday night with a 1,000 metres and continues Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. The men and women contest three races at 500, 1,000 and 1,500 metres. The top five women and four men — Charles Hamelin has pre-qualified with his third place overall finish at 2009 world championships — will be named to the 2010 Olympic team on Aug. 26. A racer’s best two results in each event count, so nothing is certain yet. Jean took the first men’s 500 on Sunday. McFarlane was fourth. The final 500 goes on Monday. Still, it was a great day for the nine Calgary Olympic Oval-based skaters who are in Vancouver trying to make a dent in the monopoly that Quebec-based skaters have always had in this sport. A few minutes before McFarlane won his race, Jessica Gregg captured the women’s 500 metres in 43.663 seconds. That followed Michael Gilday’s win Sunday in the first men’s 1,500. “It was one of my goals to win the 500 here,” said Edmonton’s Gregg, who was third in the distance at 2009 world championships and second in the first women’s 500 on Sunday behind Montreal’s Kalyna Roberge. Roberge was fourth Wednesday. “I’ve never beaten Kalyna at a trials before so to win this means so much,” said Gregg. “I’m super happy right now.” But the day belonged to McFarlane, the unknown who has written himself into the Olympic picture. A biological science major at the University of Calgary, he’s been training in Calgary since he was 18. He’s following the path set by Gregg and Gilday, the Yellowknife product who won his first World Cup medal here last October at the Pacific Coliseum. On Wednesday, McFarlane played down any rivalry that might be brewing with the Quebec contingent. “There is always a rivalry,” he said. “After the 1,500 when Gilday won, I could feel the tension building but we train well together (with the Quebec skaters). There’s a bit of confrontation but we’re still reasonably close. It’s Canada and we’ve got to compete together.” As for the books, McFarlane drew inspiration from Fox’s story. “It wasn’t necessarily the story but how he wrote it that kind of uplifted me and kept me positive the last month,” he said. Now all McFarlane needs to do is write his own happy ending here at the Pacific Coliseum. Hmmm, I like this guy (McFarlane) - sentimentally, though, I'm still pulling for Gilday and Olivier...
