sk8r, not implying that your story was gossip. ^^^ that's a tough deal. Moral of the story--you can never ask too many questions? Best of luck with the skater club "for all ages!"

Thanks Gasp. I just didn't want to get into too many gory details but that's the Big Picture.

LOL Mtnme "I don't waste my time on gossip" My grandmother said gossip was about 10% truth that had been salted with 90% imagination. We've dressed it up in today's PC world and call it "speculation." BWAhahaha...I didn't say I don't waste my time on gossip.... I'm just saying I'm picky on what gossip I deam worth my attention, LOL. Ain't no National Enquirers in MY grocery cart! ... and LOL on the 90 percent imagination and resultant speculation.... Sk8er - While I'm excited to hear about so many people interested in giving the sport a whirl, it's upsetting that a bad coaching situation can take away 'the fun'. Let's face it, at our age, it's all about 'the fun'. It isn't like we're looking to make an Olympic team or something. It's a given we wouldn't be looking for that intensity of coaching. I hope your club can survive this unfortunate episode and keep all the new enthusiasm for the sport. Keep us posted on how your club is doing.

Whine, whine, whine. How would we know if any of the other national federations are appearling this situation to the IOC & ISU?
BANNED SKATERS APPEAL 1-YEAR BANNED By Yi Whan-woo Korea Times intern
Two national team short track speed skaters, Lee Jung-su and Kwak Yoon-gy, who received one year ban for their alleged involvement in race-fixing from an initial three years, again lodged an appeal, Monday.
In an obvious objection to the Korea Skating Union's (KSU) action, the two athletes submitted an appeal to the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC), the nation's sports-governing body.
"Lee made an appeal on Thursday, and Kwak followed suit on Monday," a KOC official confirmed.
Under the regulations, the KOC will have 30 days before convening a disciplinary committee to the case review. The committee's decision this time will be final.
The KSU originally imposed heavy punishment of a three year ban from competitions early last month, which was harsher than the one year suggested by a special joint committee, comprising of members of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the KOC and the KSU.
The decision, which could have possibly ended their career, was reduced to one year later in themonth, following a review by the KSU after Lee and Kwak's first appeal.
The two Olympic medal-winning skaters allegedly rigged the results of a series of races including the national team tryouts for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and this year's World Championships in March.
Lee was rumored of having asked Kwak for help by letting him win tryout races for Vancouver. At the Winter Olympics, Lee won gold medals in the men's 1,000 meters and 1,500 meters while Kwak took silver in the 5,000 meters relay.
Lee, 20, pulled out from the World Championships in March citing a knee injury. With Lee absent, Kwak won the gold in the 1,500 meters.

Well, hate to put a damper on the fun but the KOC came back with their decision on the appeal from Kwak and Lee. Their suspension has been reduced to six months. No more appeals. So race fixing in bad but ehhh, not that bad . Except if you're one of the skaters who lost a chance at the Olympics because of this, I guess. Lee, Kwak suspended for 6 months By Yoon Chul Staff reporter Vancouver Olympics short track skaters Lee Jung-su and Kwak Yoon-gy both received six month suspensions from the sport, Tuesday, on charges of having been involved in race-rigging. The Korea Olympic Committee (KOC) convened to decide the level of punishment for Lee and Kwak, shortening the period of suspension from a year to six months. The KOC’s decision will prevent double gold medalist Lee and silver medalist Kwak from taking part in the Winter Asian Games. The reduced ban gives the pair a better chance to extend their international careers. Lee and Kwak allegedly fixed the results of a series of recent competitions including their national team tryouts in March, 2009. The Korea Skating Union (KSU) suspended them for three years at first. The skaters appealed the decision and the committee reduced the suspension to a year. The two appealed again, with the KOC now having made its final decision. www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/sports/2010/07/136_69891.html

Those peeps get sent to Hell for 12 month tours, multiple tours, but they still know how to boogy.

Skating medalist chooses tough road By On Nu-Ri / JoongAng Daily / August 12, 2010 Lee Seung-hoon, an Olympic gold medalist in long-track speed skating, is interested in competing in both short-track and long-track events at the Asian Winter Games next year. Lee became the first Asian skater to win gold and silver in long-distance speed skating events by placing first in the 10,000 meters and second in the 5,000 meters, but today he is training hard in short-track speed skating. The athlete is currently training with Korea National Sport University’s skating team. He left the national team training camp so he could work on his skills on both the long and short track. A few weeks late on this, but I just read the suspension change regarding the KOREAN CHEATERS. Well bah humbug, blech and yeah--what else do we expect.
So let's see. It will be a free-for-all skate during World Cup season because the CHEATERS' actions have been rubber stamped by the local governing board.
Oh where, oh where is the IOC on this?

Some Korean ST news: Lee Seung-hoon, short-track'er-turned-long-track-Olympic-Champion, is skipping the short track national trials to concentrate on long track... After Olympic gold in Long Track, I can't say that this is much of a surprise. Lee last competed on the Short Track World Cup circuit during the 2007-2008 season, and he was quite good. But he seems to have found his calling in Long Track - best of luck to him! -------------------------- Also, I ran across this article - it's about a Canadian long-tracker (Phil Riopel), but it gives some insight into the training of the Korean team. This guy stayed with Kwak Yoon-Gy, and mentions that military service is mandatory, except for Olympic/Asian Games medalists! Don't let the title fool ya'... Lily sent me this video link. I've seen it before, but for the life of me I can't remember where, so forgive me if it's already here somewhere (I'm pretty sure it's not on THIS thread)...
This little Korean skater was working on his 'technique', and just wasn't ready to quit. These tiny ones are just sooooo precious!
Watch for him in 2022 or 2026!

Hardest working skaters in the world. Survival of the fittest and that that. They just set the bar for everyone else.
