I wasn't sure where to post this, so I hope it's okay here. I just wanted to let everyone know that my book, which has a speed skater character in it, made it through to the quarterfinals of the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest. I started writing Picking Up the Pieces at age 15 and was hugely inspired by the Torino Games. Other than giving Katherine a copy of my book at the St. Louis Nationals and getting to briefly interview Izy for the book, this contest has to be the coolest thing that has happened to me writing wise. So anyway, a big thank you to all the speed skaters who inspired me. If anyone is interested the link for the contest excerpt is: www.amazon.com/Picking-Up-the-Pieces-ebook/dp/B003CV7SGS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=digital-text&qid=1269444348&sr=8-2So far the easiest way I have found to access it is through Kindle for PC.

Wow, Beth - that's fantastic! I looked for the contest excerpt but I couldn't find how to access it. I did read the editorial reviews, and they were positively glowing, as were the 2 customer reviews. And this is the FOURTH book you wrote while in high school? Wow! It's cool that you gave Katherine a copy... Aside from the reviews, here's what I DID find: Product Description Picking Up the Pieces is a fun and heartwarming story that chronicles the lives of five teenaged athletes as they deal with individual hardships and overcome racism, stereotypes, injury, and previous mistakes. There's Petra, a snowboarder, who has grown up in a world of privilege and wealth, yet has never known what it means to have a loving family. And then there's Shayne, a short track speed skater, who's had to learn some of life's lessons the hard way. Harper spent much of her early childhood going in and out of hospitals. She vowed that if she ever learned to walk, she'd play hockey and now hockey, her one love, seems to be the cause of her injuries. Next is Elena, whose comeback to the skiing world serves as a painful reminder of past mistakes. Finally, there's Alex, a figure skater living in a world of impossible expectations. While preparing for the Olympics, these five very different girls become an unlikely group of friends as they begin to pick up the pieces of their dysfunctional lives. About the Author Picking Up the Pieces is the fourth novel Beth Pond completed during her high school career. She has also published two short stories, "Far From Home" and "Abby's Keeper", which are currently available through the Amazon Shorts program. Beth recently graduated 3rd in class and is now a freshman at Hendrix College. Very impressive, Beth - if you can give our readers any additional help in finding the contest excerpt, that would be great!

Yes, this is the fourth book I wrote in high school. I self-published Picking Up the Pieces back in August of 2008 and then revised it slightly for this contest. In regards to accessing the excerpt, I must say it is not the easiest thing in the world. Once you go to the excerpt link there should be a button on the right side of the screen that says Kindle for PC. There are other options too like Kindle for Blackberry. Click and download the version you want and then you should have access to the excerpt. You can then also look at other entries in the contest, if you are interested. The contest excerpts are free by the way. Here's the link: www.amazon.com/Picking-Up-Pieces-Breakthrough-ebook/dp/B003CV7SGS/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top I hope that works and thanks for the kind words Lori and Gasp.

'Inside' joke here... 'Been watching B-Ball all afternoon, and had to laugh at this one... how many of y'all in the Short-Track Posse know what I'm talkin' 'bout?: Josh Lomers (Baylor) fouled out. The announcer said, "And Josh Lomers is Dairy-Queen'ed" Where's Jenna? ;D

LOL! I miss Jenna, what a sweetie. And I'll bet all concerned would rather have a banana split than a disqualification any day!

Interesting. Seems quite a few of our short track fans also watch Mad Men. It garnered quite a few Emmy Nominations including 2 for best writing. My fave episode was nominated in that catergory: Guy Walks Into an Advertising Agency. You may remember this one--it's the John Deer tractor, they cut my foot off episode. Dark humor at its best!

Now that I've done my part to get the skaters taken care of on blog and website, I've finally gotten my personal interior design blog up and running. Please stop by, give your thoughts, suggestions, ask a question, and most importantly, spread the word. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank You in advance! Thank you. I still have lots to do on it, (blogger isn't as 'user friendly' as wordpress) but it does allow for a few things wordpress doesn't, so we'll see how it goes...
