mtnme - I find myself marveling that with all the conflict within the ST program over the last couple of years, there was very little mention of it during the Olympics. I expected it to be a headline story before every ST segment ad nauseum - but (thankfully) it seemed to be largely ignored. LT seemed to escape the USS 'drama' as it was happening, but looky at what the headlines are with regard to Sochi - the lack of Long Track medals. Go figure...

Maria Lamb's comments seem to indicate that there was a lot of b.s. going on behind the scenes, more so than usual, that we never heard about. It also appears from this article that there was a 'gag order' on just about everyone affiliated with USS and the USOC. Which begs the question...if you were doing things in an appropriate manner, why would you need the gag order in the first place? Only the guilty have something to hide.
I've had some thoughts I've wanted to write down, but I too thought it more prudent to wait until after the games are over. Now that they almost are, and many of these skaters are going to retire, I wonder if the dam will break on the full extent of what has been going on behind the scenes. Now that would be an interesting read I'd pay real money for.

Well, the program can only go up from here. It couldn't get any worse. What is tragic is the impact on lives, the disappointments and wasted years of athletes who clearly gave their personal best efforts.

My knee-jerk reaction? No. If you 'mesh' the two disciplines, you'll damage both... ISU looking at making speedskating more excitingFebruary, 2014 Mass start races would add intrigue, team tactics and a direct confrontation of skating styles in a long-distance event. It could also bring some of the push and shove elements of short track to the Olympic big oval – something likely to displease purists.Read it all: www.ksl.com/?nid=145&sid=28780660&title=isu-looking-at-making-speedskating-more-excitingTAGS: Speedskating / Sochi Olympics / Sven Kramer

TITLE: Figure skating boss proposes radical changes to sportTYPE: Article TAGS: Ottavio Cinquanta / Mike Plant / Short Track Speedskating / Long Track Speedskating TIMELINE: March 26, 2014 Most of the proposed changes apply to figure skating and long track speedskating - well, basically turning long track into short track, the way I read it. What that would mean for short track is anybody's guess... Note: As usual with our Chicago Tribune stories, you'll need to copy & paste the link - if you just click the blue part, you won't get there. www.chicagotribune.com/sports/international/chi-figure-skating-boss-proposes-radical-changes-to-sport-20140325,0,3069833.story

I didn't realize Liam was from Fairbanks! This is an impressive story. I remember hearing about Liam's traumatic brain injury (TBI) when it happened in 2008 - it was horrific. ...he was training at Salt Lake City's Olympic Oval when life changed. "I was about to start up another set of laps," he said, "and I woke up 30 hours later in the hospital."He did eventually recover, and competed at Long Track Olympic Trials for Sochi. The story also says he will begin studying medicine in Milwaukee and work as a technical director for a speedskating club there. Here's another article on the 'report', this one from the Chicago Tribune, and it includes some insights about who's staying, who's going - including the coaches. Though it's mostly focused on LT, it also says that ST coach Guy Thibault is staying, Stephen Gough is leaving: TITLE: Review confirms suspected reasons for Olympic speedskating collapseTYPE: Article TAGS: Brittany Bowe / Heather Richards / Jilleanne Rookard / Brian Hansen / Shani Davis / Ted Morris / Nancy Swider-Peltz / Guy Thibault / Stephen Gough / Jae Su Chun / Finn Halvorsen / Kip Carpenter / Ryan Shimabukuro / Joey Mantia / Emery Lehman / Jeff Klaiber / Jorrit Bergsma TIMELINE: May 12, 2014 www.chicagotribune.com/sports/olympics/ct-us-speedskating-spt-0513-20140513,0,856534.story
