Let me briefly explain the "Madison Point Relay". I'm basing off the info that's posted on the ISU website. But I'm no expert by any means so my interpretation of it might be slightly off.
That being said, here are some bullet points.
1. Total # of laps : 24 (compared to 27 in 3000m relay) 2. Total distance : 24 x 111.11m = approx. 2667m 3. Number of skaters per team : 2 (yes that's it) 4. Number of teams per race : 4-6(?) There could be more or less I guess. 5. Points : At the conclusion of each 6 laps, top 4 teams are given points in this order: 5-3-2-1. At the end of 24th(last) lap, the points given are 10-6-4-2.
So teams have 4 chances to collect points, one from each end of 6th, 12th, 18th & 24th lap .
I did some math the other day and there is a few scenarios in which teams can have ties. Tie breaker rules are not explained in the ISU document so I don't know how they'll rank teams in case there's a tie. My guess is that whoever crosses the finish line first will win out.
If you're familiar with the 3000m Super Final at World Championships, it somewhat helps you understand the point system. In 3000SF, the fastest skater who crosses the first 1000m is awarded with 5 extra points. However in MPR, up to 4 teams will receive points.
MPR is one of the two experimental events that are being tried during the 2014 -15 season. The other event is the 3000m Individual Race at WC4 in Seoul in lieu of 1500m(2).

SMITH Jessica & GOETZ Kimberly are in Heat 2 for the Women's Madison Point Relay. And the KRUEGER brothers are for the Men's Relay in Heat 1. Thanks for the explanation above - I watched the video again, and noticed that there were 8 teams in that one. Also, you may be correct about the tie-breaker, as both Japan and Russia had 4 points, but they listed Japan as placing higher than Russia (Japan crossed the finish line before Russia). Should be interesting!

Thank you, the explanation was quite clear and made sense in watching the video.
Of course for me the issue is - why do we need this?
JMO but SST is exciting to watch in and of itself, and the Relay is one of the highlights of the sport. As a veteran fan, there is nothing about the Madison that I find appealing except to learn another convoluted set of rules. Is this supposed to attract a new audience? Of course it won't - too much thinking required. Will it be fun for the skaters? I think they have enough to deal with during competition, and they don't need another opportunity to incur serious injury. Is this new competition supposed to deflect focus from all of the organization's problems?
This sport will retain its fans with the fresh new faces and talent that we see each year from every country, and seeing that talent progress and develop. Of course having a reputable NGB would help retention greatly, but we know that's not going to happen.

I'm going to put the Madison Point Relay in the back of my mind for now. It's more than I care to think about.

These guys need to get on with the schedule. They're at least 20 mins behind the schedule.
Oh no, the delay was due to an injured skater. Let me see if I can more details on that.

It sounds like SUH Fabrice (AUS) crashed during the 1000m Rep. He sustained an injury and was probably sent off to the hospital. Hope it's nothing serious.
