I just noticed Vicky Labourdette is among the women! Don't know how I missed her in your list above... glad to see she's still skating.
I noticed that Michael Gilday was in the 1500M but not the 500M - they don't compete in all distances?

Michael suffered an injury from a fall in the 1500m final and pulled out of the 500m to get checked out. I haven't heard anything about his condition since. Hope he's okay.

No, no, no, NOOOOOOOOOOO about Michael! I hope he's okay, first and foremost... Does Canada have any kind of 'medal contender' clause that would help him?

He can apply for an injury bye and if it is accepted then there's the possibility that he could make the team.

The third day of Olympic trials was on Monday and the distance contested was 500m(2). Here are the links to the results: Women's 500m(2): www.speedskating.ca/sites/default/files/day_3._womens_500m.pdfMen's 500m(2): www.speedskating.ca/sites/default/files/day_3._mens_500m.pdfSince Charles Hamelin has won all 5 of the races so far, he is the first person to be officially named to the Olympic team! Despite this he is still expected to compete in the last 2 days of competition. Despite the fact that Speed Skating Canada isn't posting the overall results yet there are a couple of thing that are clear. For the women, Marie-Eve Drolet, Valerie Maltais, Marianne St. Gelais, and Jessica Hewitt, have been ranked 1-4 in every race so far (except 500(2) where they were 1,2,3,5) and they have created quite the gap on the rest of the field. Charle Cournoyer has been incredibly consistent on the men's side in his first year on the national team. He's made every A final and hasn't finished lower then 4th in any race and seems to be comfortably in second place. There are a total of 3 videos from this day and here is the link to the first video from the competition: The competition resumes tomorrow (Thursday) at 2:50pmEST with 1000m(2) and 1500m(3).

No, no, no, NOOOOOOOOOOO about Michael! I hope he's okay, first and foremost... Does Canada have any kind of 'medal contender' clause that would help him? This just breaks my heart. Where the Olympics are concerned, Michael just can't seem to catch a break. I hope he has some options open to him that might turn that around. On a purely emotional note, it warms my heart to see Tremblay still skating despite his age. You go Francois! Age is mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter. Olivier Jean and Remi are also still giving it their best shots. Really, other than Charles, the A finals are all over the board. Who knows how all those discretionary picks are going to shake out after all is said and done. It must be very nerve racking for the skaters though. (Other than Charles, who clinched his spot. That's a HUGE load off of his mind, I'm sure.)

Michael Gilday has submitted a "bye" requested to the Short Track High Performance Committee ( the group who make the final decision on the members of the Olympic team). Based on his results from last year he will most likely be selected to the team. Then it's up to him to earn his spot to race individual distances at the 2 world cups that are Olympic qualifiers.

Welcome to the board, Canadian Fan! And thanks to both you and sk8erfan for the info about Michael - really hoping he makes the team, he's a good guy. sk8erfan, I really appreciate your faithfulness in keeping us updated about Canadian Trials - with my travels this week I haven't been able to pay as much attention as I'd like. When do they actually name the team?

The fifth and final day of Olympic trials was on Sunday and the distances contested were 500m(3) and 1000m(3). Here are the links to the results: Women's 500m(3): www.speedskating.ca/sites/default/files/f_500mday5.pdfWomen's 1000m(3): www.speedskating.ca/sites/default/files/f_1000mday5_sheet1.pdfMen's 500m(3): www.speedskating.ca/sites/default/files/h_500mday5_sheet1.pdfMen's 1000m(3): www.speedskating.ca/sites/default/files/h_1000m_day5.pdfThere are 6 videos from the last day and here's the link to the first one: Speed Skating Canada named 6 of the 10 members of the Olympic team and will decide the other members today and will announce the rest of the team August 29th from what I've heard. Men | Women | Charles Hamelin (Highest ranked, 500+1000) | Valérie Maltais (1st Overall) | Olivier Jean (Highest ranked, best 2 distances) | Marianne St. Gelais (2nd Overall) | Charle Cournoyer (Second ranked, 500+1000) | Marie-Ève Drolet (3rd Overall) |
Injury Update. Marie-Ève Drolet was diagnosed with sacroiliac irritation and will just need some rest. Charles Hamelin was also injured in a fall in the last race but it's not serious, there's no fractures and he should be back on ice in a week. Michael Gilday is also recovering from his concussion and you can read about his injury and recovery in his most recent blog post at: mgilday.wordpress.com/No overall results have been posted yet but I'll post the link to those as soon as they're available. Alternatively, I calculated the overall results on my own so I've attached that. It's nothing official but it should give you an idea where everyone stands. Unofficial_Standings.xlsx (13.88 KB)
