Thanks, Lori, for all the stats and commentary! BRAVO J.R.! Too bad about his fall in 500m; I hope John Henry is OK!
I'm checking in for a few minutes before we all head out for Bakersfield Special Olympics! Good luck to TEAM USA!

Up next are the Semifinal rounds (Ladies, then Men) of the 500M. USA has no skaters remaining in this distance. My video feed is annoyingly choppy... Mine went choppy for a little bit too and I couldn't see the racing and all I could hear was that d*mn horn! Is there a such thing as a horn induced rage because I think I'm experiencing it right now...

J.H........no concussion, breaks or pulls. A few stitches in the chin. Could have skated the final.....coaches opted not to.

I don't understand Russian anyway...

I'm all about the numbers so I've calculated how many spots each country gets in the 1500m and 500m. Nothings official yet but here's the top 36 for the 1500m and the top 32 for the 500m after WC3 and WC4. Full ResultsMen Women Country | 1500m | 500m |

I just posted an update on Elise Christie (GBR) - check the GBR thread. Quoting Elise's FB Page: "I am very glad it wasn't as bad as it looked."

Thanks Sk8terfan for all the calculations.
To recap - I respect and appreciate all of the "smart calls" being made by athletes and coaches to protect themselves from further injuries once the primary goals of the qualifying WC's are met.
Nice to see that many of the top skaters understand the importance of staying "healthy" versus a podium win at this stage of the Olympic calendar. As I recall, Apolo was criticized at his Oly Trials for SLC 2002 for not going all out on his last race despite having sufficient points. Hopefully this is a sign that we have evolved from those antiquated notions of what athletes should or should not be doing in competitions - they know best!! And it seems like the US coaches are acting in the best interests of the young skaters.

Couple of updates on Canadian skaters. Marianne St-Gelais has been suffering from a virus so she only skated the quarter finals of the 1500 to gain enough points to qualify the spot.
Charles Hamelin cut his leg in his fall in the 1500 but from what I've been able to find out it is not serious and he didn't race after for precautionary reasons. I'm not sure if he will race tomorrow or not as it's been announced that the Canadians have qualified the maximum number of spots in all distances for both men and women as well as the relay so he really doesn't need to.
I was really happy to hear that Elise Christie was not badly injured. I really like her and would like to se her win an Olympic Medal. Also happy to hear that John Henry was okay. That was a nasty fall and I was afraid he might have suffered a concussion.
