West end kids get chance to skate with OlympiansBy JOHANNA BOYLE / Journal Ishpeming Bureau / January 8, 2010 www.miningjournal.net/page/content.detail/id/557478/West-end-kids-get-chance-to-skate-with-Olympians.html?nav=5006MARQUETTE - Kids participating in the Bell Hospital Strength from Within Wellness Challenge got a chance to have fun and exercise with two Olympians Thursday. Olympic short track speedskaters Anthony Lobello and Kimberly Derrick hit the ice at the Berry Events Center at Northern Michigan University to hang out with west end middle school students who are working to improve their health through the Bell program. "I think most importantly, we have used everything to build onto the next step. We used athletics to build into education and we used education to build onto other facets of our lives," Lobello said. "There's all kinds of things you can do as long as you stick to what you feel good about, what you're passionate about. If it's designing clothes or building rockets, it doesn't matter." Lobello and Derrick spent some time talking with the middle schoolers before heading out onto the ice to skate and play some relay games. "They came up with this idea of a skate with the Olympians night," said Josh Drew, wellness manager at Bell Hospital, of Lobello and Derrick. The Strength from Within program is a school year-long challenge for middle school students in which participants set health goals, improve fitness and attend educational workshops for the chance to win a year of tuition at NMU. "We thought this would be a good opportunity for the kids to relax," Drew said. "Attitude, perception - these things are so important." Anthony Lobello's fundraising website, www.goforgoldlobello.com/News.html posted the following article about Anthony & Kimberly's participation in a Special Olympics event a couple of weekends ago: Olympians Anthony Lobello and Kimberly Derrick are among USOEC athletes participating in Opening Ceremonies at the Winter Special Olympics at Northern Michigan University-------------------- ...also, here's a follow-up to the 'Skate With Olympians' event that Kimberly and Anthony Lobello participated in earlier this month (See the complete story a couple of posts above this one). This article contains the link to a News 6 video from the event, and I've also included some screencaps from the video. Video Link: "Skating and Getting Inspired"www.uppermichiganssource.com/news/story.aspx?id=564314Link to Story: www.bellmemorial.org/?p=114‘Skate With Olympians’ Event provided by Bell Wellness January 7, 2011 Thursday, January 2, 2011-Children participating in Bell Wellness’ Strength From Within program got to participate in an event that was quite a treat! Bell Wellness, in conjunction with Northern Michigan University, hosted ‘Skate With Olympians’ at the Berry Event Center on NMU’s campus. [Olympians] Anthony Lobello and Kimberly Derrick talked with middle school kids about the benefits and rewards of working hard. “We’ve had ten times as many failures as we’ve had successes,” said the athletes, “but that doesn’t keep us from continually working hard.” They talked about the importance of staying fit and taking care of your body while young. Both athletes said they started out on inline skates (rollerblades) and eventually (after many years) switched to skating on ice. Kimberly Derrick passed around the medal she received at the 2010 Olympics. It was something that few people ever get to see, let alone come in contact with. The kids were in awe as both Kim and Anthony said, “We didn’t dream of becoming Olympic Athletes when we were kids and it’s kind of amazing that if you work hard for something, you can achieve it.” Anthony even mentioned that America is the land of dreams. “We’re so lucky that we live somewhere that you can come from very humble beginnings (like Marquette) and succeed to no end if you’re willing to work hard.” The kids had a great time skating on the NMU ice and hope to have many more exciting events like this in the future! This article is about the elimination of the Stupac Olympic Scholarship program – there are some quotes by Kimberly here, as well as a nice pic of her from the 2006 Torino Olympics. For discussion of the scholarship cuts, see the following Boots & Blades link: therockerforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=st&thread=136&page=12#8044Olympic bronze medalist, former congressman Bart Stupak respond to potential elimination of B.J. Stupak Olympic scholarshipBy Danielle Emerson | The Bay City Times / February 20, 2011 Kimberly competes in the 2006 Torino Olympics. Photo Credit: Eric Gay, APKimberly Derrick is a 25-year-old bronze medal Olympian in women's speed skating, and she trains for her sport while also enrolled as a student at Northern Michigan University. But a federal scholarship program that helps Derrick and other Olympic student athletes is in jeopardy. The scholarship was set up with the help of former U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, a Menominee Democrat whose district included northern Bay County. The scholarship was created in 1998 and later renamed for Stupak’s son, who died tragically in 2000. It offers a pool of about $1 million a year, based on student need. President Obama’s proposed budget does not include funding for the scholarship program. The Education Department says it lacks evidence the scholarships are effective and there are other ways for talented athletes to get help, The Associated Press reported. But Derrick disagrees. “I think the scholarship is very valuable for us because it allows us to pursue more than just a sport,” she said. “It's really important to be able to have a high level of education as well as achieve a high level in a sport at the same time.” Today, Derrick is one of about 100 Olympic student athletes training at the U.S. Olympic Education Center in Marquette, on the campus of Northern Michigan University. Many are there with financial help from the B.J. Stupak Olympic Scholarship. Stupak says the scholarship is designed to help Olympic hopefuls, many of whom train intensively for at least six years before trying to compete, making time for higher education difficult. “It's a unique scholarship in that if a you're a speed skater, for example, this is a busy time for you,” he said. “You may only be able to take two or four hours at a university and the scholarship allows for that flexibility.” Read More: www.mlive.com/news/bay-city/index.ssf/2011/02/olympic_bronze_medalist_former.html#cmpid=v2mode_be_smoref_faceTags: Kimberly Derrick / Short Track Speedskating
