Before I post Lana’s results from World Championships, here’s a nice article that came out just before the Championships started: Glenview's Gehring takes charge of U.S. speedskating teamGlenview speedskater leads team into worldsBy Philip Hersh / Chicago Tribune / March 8, 2012 Lana Gehring knew immediately that her role changed when teammate Katherine Reutter decided in January to have season-ending surgery on both hips. "I definitely felt extra pressure," Gehring said. "One of the first thoughts I had was I didn't want to let down the team, especially Katherine, because she has done much for us." Champaign's Reutter had been the leader of the U.S. short track speedskating team the past four seasons, getting better every year. In 2010, Reutter became the first U.S. woman to win an Olympic medal (silver) in an individual short track event since 1994 and helped the relay — including Gehring — win a bronze. Last winter, she became the first U.S. woman to win a world title since Bonnie Blair 25 years earlier. Reutter also led the World Cup overall season standings as well as the standings in two individual events. Now Glenview's Gehring has the leadership role as the U.S. team prepares for the World Championships Friday through Sunday in Shanghai. "I'm kind of excited to lead our team," Gehring said. "I think I was ready for it, so I didn't let the pressure be a negative thing." That was apparent at two February World Cup meets, when Gehring, 21, had by far the most impressive stretch of her six seasons on the circuit. In four individual events, Gehring won two gold medals — her first since the start of last season — plus a bronze and a fourth place. At the second meet, she won all seven races, heats through finals, at 1,000 and 1,500 meters. She also helped the U.S. relay take two silver medals. "She is actually our lifesaver," Jae Sun Chun, the U.S. short track head coach, said of Gehring. She credits changes in her training for being able to carry herself — and the team. It included a 30 percent increase in volume and intensity starting last summer. That helped her overcome doing well only in early rounds of a competition or only in the early part of the season. "In the past, I would always fade," Gehring said. "You have no idea what a surprise it was for me to do so well at this point in the season." But there were days when Gehring would look at Chun's workout plan and wonder how she ever would get through it. "It wasn't so much physical as mental," she said. Chun agrees. "She had really good physical strength and endurance but always was kind of fragile (mentally)," Chun said. "After the (2010) Olympics, her mind set is changed. Even with incredible hard training, she keeps going." In the upcoming worlds, where four races (500, 1,000, 1,500, 3,000) decide overall results, her biggest challenge will be the 500. It once was Gehring's best distance but, as her endurance improved and an Achilles tendon injury curtailed her sprint training, she has raced it just once internationally the past two seasons. "I've done so well at the last two World Cups, I don't want to aim too low or too high at worlds," she said. "I'm hoping top eight but a top five and a medal in an individual race would make me very satisfied." And hopefully lead her to bigger things in future.[/img] Read the entire story: articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-03-08/sports/ct-spt-0309-hersh-olympics-gehring--20120309_1_katherine-reutter-lana-gehring-short-track+++ Tags: Lana Gehring / Katherine Reutter / Short Track Speedskating

At the World Championships in Shanghai, China (March 9-11, 2012), Lana won the BRONZE MEDAL in the 500M, and a SILVER MEDAL in the 3000M Ladies’ Relay! The 500M medal was Team USA’s first podium in the 500m distance since Bonnie Blair won a 500m gold at the 1986 World Championships. Lana talks about the 500M: speedskating.teamusa.org/news/2012/03/10/lana-gehring-wins-500m-bronze-at-world-championships/47107“I couldn't be happier right now, I never thought I would get a bronze in the 500m, that's out of nowhere for me. It was my first win in the 500m this season and I just had fun and ended up on top. I had a slow day yesterday, but I definitely came back today strong and I'm very happy,” said Gehring. “I started off a little sluggish today, and as each round went on I was focusing on just trying my best and I didn't really have any expectations. During the races today, I was trying to slow my mental down so I could get as much power out of each stroke and really come up with a plan and not rush too much so I could make the best move as possible at the right time. I think that really helped me in the semifinal and the final,” added Gehring. Here are Lana’s World Championships results: 1500M – Heats (2nd); Semis (4th) 500M – BRONZE MEDAL; Prelims (1st); Heats (2nd); Quarters (1st); Semis (1st); Final (3rd) 1000M – Heats (2nd); Quarters (2nd); Semis (3rd) 3000M – 6th 3000M Relay - Lana skated in the Semifinals (2nd) and the Final, where the ladies won the SILVER MEDAL!
