In the Fall of 2008, I attended my first AmCup race. At that event, I sat with the father of a skater who was living with our family at the time. When the B group skated, I was gonna go get some coffee and warm up. He stopped me, and pointed out a 13-year-old skater, saying something like, "Watch this kid, he’ll be on the National Team soon”. I’ve been ‘watching’ him ever since… In his first World Cup appearance, for those who seek glory and medals, he failed. He didn’t make it into a single A Final. He ‘booted out’ when the USA seemed poised for Gold in the Men’s Relay A Final. But in the end, he WON... this 16-year-old ‘newbie’ WON the hearts of everyone who watched him - the nail-biter wins in the B and C Finals of his distances in his first forays against the ‘big dogs’ - his aggressive skating in the relays after GREAT pushes from J.R. He was not at all intimidated by the competition. I’m sure he still has a lot to learn, but I can’t wait to see more! Here are his results: 1500M(1) – Heats (3rd); Rep Heats (1st); Rep SF (1st); SF (4th); Final B (1st) 1000M – Not Entered 500M - Prelims (1st); Heats (3rd-q); QF (3rd); C Final (1st) 1500M(2) - Not Entered 5000M Relay – John-Henry skated every leg of the Relay, ultimately finishing 4th in the A Final Milestones: Finished 1st in 5 of his 9 individual heats; won the B Final. ----------------------------------- John-Henry leads Wenhao Liang (CHN) in the 500M Prelims at World Cup 1. Sad news for Simon Cho - his injuries haven't healed enough for him to skate at his best in World Cups 3 & 4, so he chose to give up his spot on the team to another skater.
Congratulations to John-Henry, who is now on his way to Asia!
This was a classy move on Simon's part, and I know we all wish him the best for a healthy return to skating at US Championships in January!

Here are a few screen grabs I got from the ISU broadcast: John-Henry prepares to 'go to the start'... Final Lap of the Men's Relay - John-Henry passed the Russian skater to take the lead, but was passed on the inside coming out of the final turn by Sjinkie Knegt (NED). This is how close it was at the finish line of the relay! Tags: John-Henry Krueger / Short Track Speedskating

The 'Rookie' DELIVERS! John-Henry won his first-ever World Cup medal - a silver in the 1500M in Moscow! Korean star Lee Jung-Su went out like a rabbit and John-Henry followed - both of them eventually lapped the pack... L to R: Lee Ho-Suk (KOR-Bronze); Lee Jung-Su (KOR-Gold); John-Henry Krueger (USA-Silver) Photographer - Unknown Krueger Wins Silver in 1500m at Moscow World CupLinda Jager / TeamUSA.org / February 04, 2012 “It feels great to win my first senior World Cup medal. It’s an honor to get silver for the United States of America,” said Krueger. “The race was pretty stacked, every skater that was in that race deserved to be there. With Jung-Su sprinting up front, I was told to follow him and the other skaters decided to stay back and let him and me fight for it. He did win in the end, but the fact that I was able to be in the fray of the fight it was an accomplishment for me. Hopefully, I will compete the same tomorrow as I did today.”Read More: speedskating.teamusa.org/news/2012/02/04/krueger-wins-silver-in-1500m-at-moscow-world-cup/46509Tags: John-Henry Krueger / Short Track Speedskating

John-Henry won a BRONZE medal in the 1500M at Junior World Championships in Melbourne, Australia (February 24-26, 2012). He also finished SECOND in the 1500M Superfinal (a non-medal event), and was part of the BRONZE-medal-winning Men’s Relay team. John-Henry is quoted in TeamUSA.org’s article: speedskating.teamusa.org/news/2012/02/24/krueger-skates-to-a-1500m-bronze-at-junior-world-championships/46823 “I’m honored to win a medal for the United States of America. It is a little disappointing that I didn’t get a higher position on the podium,” said Krueger. “The Koreans were racing strong and they did a really good job.” “The style of racing at Junior Worlds is different from racing at World Cup level,” he added. “I think it’s a little crazier, personally. I don’t have any excuses for how I performed. Speedskating is speedskating, stuff happens and you can’t win them all.” 1500M – BRONZE MEDAL; Heats (1st); Quarters (3rd); Semis (2nd); Final (3rd) 500M – Prelims (1st); Heats (1st); Quarters (2nd); Semis (3rd) 1000M – Prelims (1st); Heats (1st) 1500M Superfinal - 2nd (not a medal event) 3000M Relay – BRONZE MEDAL; Heats (2nd); Semis (2nd); Final (3rd) John-Henry wins BRONZE in the 1500M at Junior World Championships in Melbourne, Australia - L to R: Lee Hyo Been (KOR-Silver); Park Se Yeong (KOR-Gold); John-Henry Krueger (USA-Bronze).
