Melvindale native will compete in Olympic trials next monthBy Dave Herndon / News-Herald / Tuesday, December 10, 2013 Winning an Olympic medal has always been the dream for Melvindale native Jessica Smith.
The sport she grew up competing in, inline skating, never was added to the roster of events for the winter or summer games.
Now at 30 years old, and after switching to short track speed skating, her time is now.Read it all: www.thenewsherald.com/articles/2013/12/10/sports/doc52a212ee77f98981151948.txt

Here's an article with some adorable pictures of Jessica Smith over the years. Growing up Jessica SmithJessica Smith is a 30-year-old short track speed skater from Melvindale, Michigan. Smith started out as an inline skater and had a very successful career on the wood. She then tried long track but eventually gravitated to short track because of the pack-style racing that is similar to inline. Smith missed the 2010 Olympics but appeared on The Colbert Report as a guest to discuss sports psychology. Take a look back at Smith before all of that happened.www.nbcolympics.com/photos/growing-jessica-smith

Jessica is currently skating in Olympic Trials, but here are her results from World Cups 3 & 4 (the two Olympic qualifying competitions). The team’s overall performances in these 2 World Cups qualified the USA to send 3 ladies to the Winter Olympics in Sochi - of those 3 who go, 3 will skate in the 500M & 1500M, and 2 will skate in the 1000M. We did not qualify a Ladies Relay team. World Cup 3, Torino Italy (November 7-10, 2013)1500M – Prelims (2nd); Heats (4th-Advanced); QF (6th) 500M – Pre-Prelims (1st); Prelims (3rd- qualified); Heats (4th) 1000M – Pre-Prelims (2nd); Prelims (2nd); Heats (4th) 3000M Relay – Jessica skated in every leg of the relay, where the team finished 2nd in the Heats, 3rd in the Semifinals, and 3rd in the B Final World Cup 4, Kolomna, Russia (November 14-17, 2013)1500M – MADE IT TO FINAL A Heats (2nd); QF (2nd); SF (1st); Final A (4th) 500M – Not Entered 1000M – Pre-Prelims (2nd); Prelims (PEN) 3000M Relay – Jessica skated in the Heats, but the team got a Penalty and did not advance Jessica skirts around a ‘multi-skater pileup’ in the 1500M Semifinals in Kolomna - Photo Credit: Oleg Nikishin, Getty Images

I was so happy to see Emily, Aly & Jessica putting their differences behind them on the podium at Trials, celebrating together and referring to one another in interviews as 'teammates and friends'. It's been a long, hard road ladies, but you finished well - enjoy your time in Sochi! Speedskating: Jessica Smith paves her own path to SochiOlympics » SLC resident emerges from scandal as a winner. By Christopher Kamrani / The Salt Lake Tribune / Jan 04 2014 ...The last 18 months have been a trying time for several skaters. But Smith has figured it out.
