We never seem to hear much about Kyle Carr in the media - so I was excitied to find this little gem in my Google Alerts! Meet Olympic Speed Skater Kyle CarrBy Alison Burdo / Wednesday, Feb 5, 2014 As a child, Carr asked his mom if he could pour ice down a hill so his sled could slide even faster than normal.
“He was definitely a daredevil,” said his mom Lisa Cervantes from Peach Tree City, Ga., where the family has lived since 2005.
When she told him no, he tried a new tactic. “I put soap on the bottom of a saucer sled,” he said. “I distinctly remember being outside and covering all of my sleds with soap.”
He doesn’t recall the results of the experiment, but says this was just one of many ways he tried to speed up his play.Read it all: www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/Olympic-Speed-Skater-Kyle-Carr-Sochi-2014-243066361.html

Very nice article! Sigh....the loss of the development program at Marquette is huge. I hope USS can get their act together and fund the program again. Kyle left home at 17 and was able to go to college AND train with a good speedskating program. Another broken ankle! These guys and gals are just awesome

After the 5000m relay I noticed a lot of hostility on the US Speedskating Facebook page directed at the team (coaches and skaters) about the fact that Kyle Carr didn't compete. I found a few articles and I now understand why people are upset but I really don't like the fact that people are attacking Eddie, Chris, JR and Jordan for not "stepping aside" for Kyle to skate, it was the coaches decision not theirs. While it is a terrible situation I had a feeling that Kyle wasn't going to skate going into the games and when I saw he wasn't in the semifinals it kind of confirmed that suspicion for me. The same thing happened for Jessica Gregg, no individual events and she didn't skate either round of the relay which, sadly, I also expected. The big issue I have is mentioned in the video is the fact that Kyle was told that he was skating in the final by the coach after the semi-final round and then he was told the day of that he wasn't. It wasn't fair to Kyle and it made a difficult situation even worse for him and everyone that was watching for him and supporting him. With all that in mind Kyle is and will always be an Olympian and he should be very proud of everything he has accomplished. Kyle Carr doesn't race in Olympic relayAfter getting to Sochi as part of the U.S. Olympic short track relay team, Peachtree City native Kyle Carr did not race in Friday's event. Kyle's mom told 11Alive's Jaye Watson, the coach said Jordan Malone was the better fit. A local businessman helped pay the way for Kyle's mom to go to Sochi to watch her son. See our coverage of Kyle Carr and his mom going to Sochi here. Russia finished first in the relay winning gold. The U.S. team finished second for silver. Even though Kyle was a part of the team, because he did not compete he will not get a medal. Kyle's mother, Lisa Cervantes said she was devastated that her son didn't race. "I just cried, and then when they started, the other two teams fell, I walked out and just sobbed, and thought, 'I hope that coach feels really good about himself. Really good about himself.' Because that was how many years of a dream that he just ripped out from Kyle's feet - after telling him for the last how many days that he was skating the final?" Carr told 11Alive that he needed time to process the day's events. Yes, in Vancouver all 5 of the competitors who came to the Vancouver games were in the relay at some level, therefore, all 5 of them received medals. Different coach, different philosophy, I guess.

Shani Davis did not skate any race in 2002. He was angry (and his mother, predictably, more so). That was an ostensible reason he switched to long track and began training outside the National Program. That said, I think Jordan was a better fit based on his long experience. The U.S. team was under terrible pressure to produce a medal of some sort at this the last opportunity. Too bad about all the hard feelings, they were unavoidable and Kyle will have more years to skate. I suspect Jordan will retire (?).

I do really feel awful for Kyle, especially since he was told he was gonna skate - he seems like a really nice guy and it would have been great if he'd had the chance to contribute. But as far as I can tell, he's been a class act about it. I'm sure the disappointment cut like a knife, but he hid it well at Closing Ceremonies and seemed to be genuinely enjoying the time with his teammates. On his Facebook Page (it was a public post), he said this yesterday: The Olympic Games. What an amazing opportunity and a true honor to represent my country at that level. Unfortunately, I didn't get to skate but the memories I made and the new friendships are worth more than gold.
We leave for World Championships in Montreal in a few weeks. It'll be nice to compete on the same continent. Thank you for the continuing support and love! The negative posts I saw seemed to be coming from one particular person crawling around Facebook sending 'poison pen' notes to the skaters, USS, etc. I don't know who this person is nor what his relation is to Kyle (if any), but saying that the rest of the skaters should have boycotted the race was inappropriate. It also does a disservice to Kyle's positive legacy as a team player and shows a lack of knowledge about how common this type of action actually is (as sk8erfan, sk8er, and the article mentioned). This also happened to Anthony Lobello in Torino - no bronze for him. Of the 16 teams (8 per gender) in the Sochi ST relays, only 5 of them utilized all 5 of their skaters in the relay rounds - and 4 of those 5 teams were in the B Finals with no medals at stake. The only team in an A Final (out of 9) that used all 5 skaters was the Korean Ladies' team. As for Mom’s statements in the article - I’m the mom of a high-level athlete too (Division 1 college soccer), and I can totally relate to the disappointment, angst and even a ‘Mama Grizzly’ feeling when you perceive an injustice being done to your son. I’ve done it myself, and our personal situation didn’t even begin to equate to the sacrifices these Olympic skater families are making to get to this point. So I give her a pass. I'm glad to see that Kyle's going to World Championships - best of luck to him!

As we know from our conversation above, Kyle didn't get to the starting line in Sochi, so I have no results to post for him - but here is a nice shot of him (with Emily Scott) at practice on Olympic ice! And here's a screen-cap I made of Kyle (with J.R. Celski & Chris Creveling) walking in Opening Ceremonies: TAGS: Kyle Carr / Short Track Speedskating

Kyle was on the World Championship team (March 14-16, 2014 - Montreal, CAN). He did not skate individual events in this competition, but skated in the 5000M Mens Relay Semifinals, where the team finished 3rd and did not advance.
