So I went ahead and booked my trip to SLC. I have a few questions if you guys don't mind answering... How much were the tickets last time this sort of events were held? Are seats assigned? Also would the races on Friday be open to the public? The Oval appears to be a speed skating rink. How is the viewing experience there for short track events? TIA I'm assuming you're talking about the World Cup - I've never seen General Admission tickets cost more than about $10 per day. Seats have never been assigned, even if they choose to offer VIP tickets (which can be quite pricey) - you sit wherever you want within whatever section your ticket gives you access to. All racing on all 3 days, including Friday's Preliminary rounds, are open to the public - if I recall, sometimes the Friday Prelims are at a reduced price, or even free. Everybody has their personal preferences for seating - but most seats are really good. The only issue sometimes can be if you're sitting too low (front rows), as some of the action is blocked by the pads or people walking/standing in front of you. I hope that helps!

Thanks Lori. These are the exact answers I was looking for. It's also nice to know tickets are cheaper at SLC than Montreal. For comparison, theirs were $35 for lower level and $25 for upper level seats. We're a family of four so every little bit helps.

What is the AAO Invitational?? Still waiting for more info, aao2010 - here's what I posted on page 1: This an invitation-only event, said to be for skaters from USA, Canada, China, Korea. It's only 1 day, and doesn't coincide with any other ST events in SLC, so I'm wondering why athletes would travel halfway around the world for a 1-day event? Oh, and there's one more thing I discovered - it will be held in Energy Solutions Arena, NOT the Oval, which makes me wonder if it might actually be an experiment in 'Ice Derby'? Ice Derby has been talked about a lot lately, but I'm not very informed about that either. As for the rest of the schedule, I've added dates for World Cups 5 & 6 - the locations are not yet set, but they'll most likely both be in Europe. WC5 is on Feb 6-8 and WC6 is Feb 13-15.

AAO is now listed on the ISU schedule. It looks like it's a two day event. However it doesn't have the ISU logo so it's probably not officially recognized.

Interesting that it's gonna be televised! I haven't seen anything about tickets for the WC yet, and I have no idea if they'll be offering VIP. Hopefully we'll hear something soon!

static.isu.org/media/166005/1895-world-cup-stss-2014-15.pdfThe latest ISU publication further proves that there would be experimental events after WC2 (AAO?) & WC5. Also individual 3000m races will be experimented at WC4 in lieu of the 2nd individual 1500m race. WC2 & WC5* *) Immediately following the closing of this Competition, Test Events may be scheduled for which a number of Skaters and Teams will be invited to participate to try out new or alternative racing formats. Further information and details will be communicated in the official Announcement of the Event. WC4** **) In order to experience the possibilities of the 3000 m as an independent distance the second 1500 m at this competition is replaced with a 3000 m.

Also here are some rule changes that will go effective this season. Many skaters will have to adapt the new starting posture by next summer except for Fontana. And only one false start warning will be given. 5. Starting procedure (pg 121)
d) If a Skater does not have both skates on the ice, i.e. full contact over the length of the blades, it is a false start (effective as of July 1, 2015).
j) After a race has been called back for a false start, then any subsequent false start by any of the Skaters will result in a penalty for the Skater(s) concerned.static.isu.org/media/165790/2014-special-regulations-and-technical-rules-speed-skating-and-short-track-speed-skating-final-version.pdf

Hmm I thought S. Korea was one of the invitees according to the ISU announcement. But the articles indicates the Netherlands is one of nations along with US, Canada and China.
Not sure what to believe.

There's more information at USSPEEDSKATING: www.teamusa.org/US-Speedskating/News/Featured-News/2014/September/04/US-Speedskating-Partners-with-Apolo-Ohno"will feature leading speedskaters from the United States, Canada, the Netherlands and Asia." I don't know what "Asia" encompasses. It has ticket info: standard ticket prices, and "a limited number of VIP tickets are available..."
