Ryan finished 12th, skating alone due to a scratch. I've heard that it's a bit more difficult to skate alone in LT without that other person to race against. Michelle posted a fun article on the IT blog related to the pics Ruff posted above: If hairstyle was a medal sport, American speedskater Ryan Bedford wins By Associated Press sports staff / February 23, 2010, 7:02PM See therockerfund.wordpress.comThe Olympic Rings and the American flag are seen in USA's Ryan Bedford's hair prior to the start of the men's 10,000 meters race at the Richmond Olympic Oval at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia - AP Photo+++ www.cleveland.com/olympics/index.ssf/2010/02/if_hairstyles_was_a_medal_spor.htmlRICHMOND, British Columbia - Ryan Bedford wanted to make an impression in his Olympic debut. That he did. The American speedskater took the ice for Tuesday's 10,000 meters with a 'do that would've won gold if outrageous hairstyles were an Olympic sport. His head was shaved and colored to resemble an American flag, with red stripes flowing over the right side, while the left side was blue with stars carved out. For good measure, he had the Olympic rings drawn out on the back. "My teammate Chad Hedrick and I were joking around last night and he said, 'Let's do something crazy,'" Bedford said. "He came up with the idea of the shave. We weren't really thinking it was going to end up like this." Bedford said a stylist worked on his hair Monday night, taking several hours to get the look just right. Wearing a baseball cap, he hid the design from most people until he came out to the oval to warm up for his lone individual race of the Olympics. "It's something I wanted to do, something to represent the USA," he said.[/img]

Here's a very well-done video by Michigan Speedskating Association, with quotes by parents, young skaters, and BB Skaters Travis Jayner, Jessica Smith and Ryan Bedford: TRY SHORT TRACK!

Midland-based Dow Corning is a sponsor of Ryan's, and they did this very high-quality video about Ryan (YouTube ain't what it used to be). It contains tons of footage from Ryan's pre-Olympics visit to Midland, and some nice shots of him as a kid. And now we know the best pizza place in Midland! (Pizza Sam's) It's also interesting about the 'ink' experiment... www.youtube.com/user/DOWCORNINGCORP#p/f/0/yupESiKBDFE

By the time I saw Ryan at the PAC--from a distance--the red, white and blue had washed out or simply faded away. However, I do love his style. There was some crazy face and body paintings to be seen from many of the Canadians. There was a cute teenage blonde who had a beautiful star-burst US Flag painted on her face. Everytime I tried to snap the pic, she turned right before my flash went off. However, I think NBC did a close up on her during the final ST races on 2/26.

So the truth comes out - BLAME HEDRICK! (Reference Ryan's patriotic 'do' above) How patriotic should you be at the Olympics? Well, look at what Ryan Bedford did. He shaved his head and dyed his hair to resemble the American flag. And topped it off with the Olympics rings at the back. However, he was tricked into doing this. Teammate Chad Hedrick duped him into doing this to his head. Hedrick was supposed to do the same thing as a public display of patriotism as they competed in the speed skating events but backed out when he saw what it would look like. As such, only Bedford was left with the "patriotic hair." ballhype.com/story/patriotic-ryan-bedford-s-american-flag-hair-prank/My personal opinion? Very cool, Ryan - Chad, you missed an opportunity... ;D +++ Another related article: U.S. speedskater Bedford falls victim to patriotic hair prankBy Martin Rogers / Feb 23, 2010 RICHMOND, British Columbia — One of the best things about being a veteran Winter Olympian is that you can trick younger colleagues into crazy pranks. Just ask long-track speedskater Ryan Bedford, who was duped into shaving and dyeing his hair to resemble an American flag by older teammate Chad Hedrick. Hedrick came up with the idea of both men sporting matching cuts but backed out after seeing the bizarre results of Bedford's follicle surgery. "Chad is one of the senior guys on the team, so he can get away with it," said Bedford. "We were joking around last night and he said: 'Let's do something crazy.' "He came up with the idea of the shave. We weren't really thinking that it would end up like this. I'm the one who gets to look weird." The 23-year-old Bedford, from Holland, Mich., finished 12th in the 10,000-meter event Tuesday.[/img]

Here are Ryan’s results from (Short Track) American Cup 1 – October 2-3, 2010 – Milwaukee: 6th Overall 1500M - 5th (A Final) 500M - 2nd (B Final) 1000M - DQ (SF) 1500M Super - 4th (A Final) Before the Olympics, Ryan stated that he was leaving his Short Track life behind to concentrate on Long Track - so it was wonderful to see him again in Milwaukee! Some Long Track skaters - including Shani Davis - have been known to compete in the early-season Short Track competitions, and apparently Ryan did the same. He showed that he’s still ‘got it’, finishing 6th overall. The Top 5 at AmCup1 got automatic berths on the Fall World Cup team. The 6th slot was a committee selection. I’m not privy to what took place – I don’t know if Ryan was actually offered the 6th spot, but the rumor was that as a Long Track Olympian, Ryan would elect to compete in the Long Track Trials last weekend instead of the ST World Cups. Ryan did compete in the Long Track Trials, and earned a spot on the Long Track Fall World Cup team for the 1500M – congratulations! Well, Ryan has proven to be a difficult skater to pin down... I thought he had moved exclusively to Long Track - then he competed in early-season Short Track - then he gave up that Short Track slot for Long Track - then he filled in a gap for Short Track... Bottom line: We're happy to have him back, even if it's just for a bit. He competed in World Cup 3 in Changchun, China, December 3-5, 2010. In doing so, he won a BRONZE medal in the 500M(1), and contributed to the SILVER medal in the Men's Relay. 500M(1) – BRONZE MEDAL; Prelims (2nd); Heats (2nd); Quarters (2nd); Semis (3rd-Advanced); Final A (1st) 1500M – Not Entered 500M(2) – Prelims (1st); Heats (3rd); Repechage Heats (1st); Repechage Quarters (2nd); Repechage Semis (1st); Repechage Final A (2nd); Quarters (4th) 1000M – Not Entered 5000M Relay – SILVER MEDALStaaaaay, Ryan - Staaaaay!

This was posted by a fan on Rocker-U's Facebook page: Speedskater Bedford knows the long and short of his sport by Michael C. Lewis / Salt Lake Tribune / December 15, 2010 Photo Credit: Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune Speedskater Ryan Bedford used to think that to excel in the short-track discipline of his sport, he needed to spend hours and hours training specifically for that wild and treacherous event. Not anymore. The 24-year-old former Salt Lake City resident has discovered he fares best in short-track when he practically doesn’t train for it at all — which is how he will approach the U.S. Short-Track Championships at the Utah Olympic Oval this weekend. It wasn’t until only three days before his first race that Bedford so much as tried on his short-track skates for the first time in nearly two weeks. “It’s such a weird situation,” he said. Read More: www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/50880896-77/track-short-bedford-olympic.html.csp+++ Tags: Ryan Bedford / Short Track Speedskating While it’s not unusual for top speedskaters to occasionally train for short-track — world-record holder Shani Davis is probably the sport’s most famous example, having honed his spectacular ability to skate the turn in part through his training on the tight corners of the short-track rink — it’s rare for them to compete at an elite level in both disciplines. Yet Bedford finished 12th in the long-track 10,000 meters at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, then qualified to compete on the World Cup circuit in short-track for the third straight season. In his first World Cup competition earlier this month in China, he won a bronze medal in the 500 and a silver in the team relay … all off just three short-track practices in the days leading up to the races. Bedford also is the reigning national champion at 10,000 meters, and will be back for the U.S. Speedskating Championships at the end of the month. “He really shouldn’t be doing what he’s doing,” his coach, former Olympic bronze medalist Kip Carpenter, marveled.[/img]

I know that many of the LT skaters flew into Moscow very close to the bombing (some arrived at a different airport) - but this article is specifically about Ryan, so I wanted to include it in his archive here. Bedford flew into Moscow airport 90 minutes before explosion By Dan Chalk / Midland Daily News / January 26, 2011 Former Midlander and 2010 U.S. Olympic speed skater Ryan Bedford is safe in Moscow after flying into Domodedovo Airport about 90 minutes before Monday's suicide bombing at the airport that killed 35 people. Bedford's mother, Beth Bedford, said in an e-mail to the Daily News that her son flew into Moscow with the U.S. Speedskating Long Track World Cup team for this coming weekend's Long Track World Cup 6 event. She said that Ryan was already at a hotel in Moscow with the U.S. team when the explosion occurred. "I talked to him on Skype, and everyone (on the U.S. team) is fine," Beth Bedford said Tuesday evening in an e-mail from Colorado, where she and her husband, Phil, both former Midlanders, reside. "They are not too concerned about the safety of everyone because they are in a good hotel and (U.S. Speedskating) has been in contact with the (U.S.) embassy." Read More: www.ourmidland.com/news/article_572a1e45-2ad8-54e8-96da-b118319d2c28.htmlBeth Bedford said her son will be competing in the 5,000-meter and 1,500-meter races this weekend in Moscow. Ryan Bedford, 24, placed 12th in the 10,000-meter race at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver last February. He told the Daily News after that race that he hoped to qualify for the next Winter Olympics in 2014, which incidentally will be held in Sochi, Russia, about 850 miles south of Moscow. The Daily News was unable to reach Ryan Bedford for comment.[/img] Tags: Ryan Bedford / Short Track Speedskating
