Here are Eddy's pics and memories from the team's visit to the White House. He also got another honor today: The key to the city of Miami, and today was declared 'Eddy Alvarez Day'! www.facebook.com/EddyTheJetAlvarez?ref=br_tf

Then and Now! My friend Harold Smiley Davis was 'Eddy The Jet's' first speedskating coach and in the past we've posted several of his videos of Eddy competing as a tot! I love this pair of photos that he posted on our Facebook Page and I wanted to put it here on Eddy's thread as well. Thanks Harold! Eddy skated in the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia (February 7-23, 2014) - this was his 1st Olympic Games! Here are his results: 1500M – Heats (3rd); Semifinals (Penalty) 500M – Heats (4th) 1000M – Heats (2nd); Quarterfinals (3rd) 5000M Relay – Eddy skated in both the Semifinals and Finals of the Men’s Relay. The team was advanced in the Semifinals after (non-penalty) contact by Korea, and in the A Final, the guys won the SILVER MEDAL!!! By the looks of Eddy's photos at a very young age (and little), he is a "natural" at baseball!

Wow, good for him.
I guess he's born to move counterclockwise.

Wow, good for him. I guess he's born to move counterclockwise. Haha - good observation! With his explosive speed off the starting line, I'll bet he'll steal a few bases, too!

Here's another article about Eddy's career change, this one from the Chicago Tribune. According to this, it's safe to say that Eddy has retired from speedskating - he will be missed! Such a great personality in the sport - our loss is baseball's gain... TITLE: Olympian Eddy Alvarez trades skates for cleatsTYPE: Article TAGS: Eddy Alvarez / Short Track Speedskating TIMELINE: July 3, 2014 The day Alvarez returned home from the 2014 Sochi Olympics with a silver medal for the 5,000-meter relay in short-track speedskating, he traded in his skates for cleats. Speedskating is now behind him, he said, and he is focusing on baseball while playing with the AZL White Sox in the rookie-level Arizona League.www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/ct-eddy-alvarez-white-sox-spt-0704-20140704,0,3140717.story

One last note from Eddy's speedskating career - results from his final competition:
Eddy was on the World Championship team (March 14-16, 2014 - Montreal, CAN). He did not skate individual events in this competition, but skated in the 5000M Mens Relay Semifinals, where the team finished 3rd and did not advance.

These photos of Eddy are from the Relay Semifinals. US men lead most of the way until Korea made a move near the end. I don't recall what Eddy was doing in the first 2 pics...I assume he was doing some 'ice-maintenance'. At the 2013 World Championships in Debrecen, I have a photo of Eddy 'sweeping' the dirty ice, which was pretty bad! As you can see, Eddy was leading during his laps... and in great form!!!!
